Tavern Music

Recommended Posts

Currently, TDM does not have any medieval tavern music. We do have pub ambience with voices, but no music.

I tried to find some such ambients from the net but it seems difficult to find medieval tavern ambience anywhere.

Is it impossibly difficult to make some?

Would there be anyone interested? I think the mod might benefit for a few simple medieval bar tunes since that need is not covered at all currently.

Here is something to inspire:

I think it would be quite difficult for someone to produce that kind of music without recording an actual medieval/renaissance period band. I guess somebody might be able to record it at one of those historical re-enactment events or something.

Or we could search for free music. Here are some I found at Magnatune:

http://magnatune.com/artists/albums/fleagle-bliss/

http://magnatune.com/artists/albums/briddes-lenten/

http://magnatune.com/artists/albums/spirit-woods/

http://magnatune.com/artists/albums/rayborn-aksaray/

The all sound fantastic to me

We can use it for free it we use the CC license (which I think is compatible, if not the same) as the TDM license:

https://magnatune.com/artists/license/student?artist=John+Fleagle&album=Worlds+Bliss+-+Medieval+Songs+of+Love+and+Death&genre=Classical

Edit: It requries a membership in magnatune, but there is a life-time membership for 240 US$. That's reachable.

If we ever end up adding such music to the main TDM repository, I think it would only be fair to send the artist a note, and possible a one-time € or $ amount. I think simply "buying" the album on magnatune would accomplish this nicely.

Edit: Ouch, I just read that John Fleagle died already in 1999 :-(

I believe there's a medieval ambient music mod for Oblivion called Medieval Instrumental Collection, which is 250Mb large, on Tesnexus (http://tesnexus.com/...le.php?id=22085).

The description reads: "This pack of music contains only intrumental pieces with no electronic/sintetizer sounds, all this music is pure instrumental, wich makes the walkthrough and explore moments full of delightful!"

Furthermore: "NOTE: This music is just a compilation of songs I made, the authors are underground since a long time ago (Medieval Era) after 70 years the songs are Public Domain, so since I am not selling them, making a profit and just sharing this, its all legal. Besides most of this songs are from Anonymous composers. Not under copyright laws. In any case you can ask by sending a PM."

If you do want to look into it, the "public" category would be likeliest to be what you're looking for.

Hi, I've been looking for some early music for the game, so I'll be sharing here if/when I find anything.

Of course I'm looking for royalty-free music only.

So here, for the starters, comes the site of Jon Sayles. He recorded great many early music on guitar (most of it is mixed multi-part recordings).

His site:

Some tunes I liked and found suitable (didn't have time to go through all his repertoire yet):

Those boulders gate ones sound cool, drop the volume a bit and they wouldnt be half bad.

Or we could search for free music. Here are some I found at Magnatune:

Unfortunately none of them are suitable, including the ones found by tangerine.

Ive been meaning to find some better bar sound/music for a while now so will do that tomoz.

if you could elaborate a bit more about your preferences for the music, maybe I'd be able to help you find it.

If we take the examples above, the Balders gate tunes have 2 things, a background feel to them and more importantly the right kind of music. You don't want the music to be over powering, and if you can help no vocals, just instrumentals. If we could get a few of those I could mix in the background chatter we already have etc.

With regards to what type of music the Balders gate stuff is a start, its the sort of music you would find in a medieval setting. but try to expand on that a little. Think of movies that are set in similar surroundings to TDM and then see what tavern/bar music they have.

Ok, from your feedback I figure you like dynamic dance-like multi-part instrumental pieces. I must admit I agree with OrbWeaver, the best way to satisfy all these requirements is to either purchase license or produce the tunes in a professional studio.

However, if you are willing to consider the non-perfect options, I think there is some chance to find something appropriate on the net.

Personally I was very glad when I found Jon Sayles' site, because it features so many completely royalty free recordings in a close-to-professional recording and performing. I think some pieces from there could fit the game and give that "background feel" that you seek. That is, if having guitar playing parts of different instruments is acceptable. In any case, they are certainly better than no pieces at all.

So, here is another list I've made of Jon Sayles' recordings involving dynamic dances:

Out of those number 2 is the best candidate.

+1, but after a quick clickaround on the website, I think this one may have some potential too: http://www.jsayles.com/music/4hands.mp3

A lot of his work sounds quite formal/regal, e.g. Elizabethan court music, which is probably where a lot of it comes from, and which could be useful if anyone's planning a TDM version of the

:P.

He says he's not a professional guitar player, but he's pretty darned talented. I thought it had been MIDI-sequenced on a computer at first  .

I agree, one wouldn't tell from his recordings that by his main profession this guy is actually a programmer, working for IBM (as his page states).

As one who tried this, I can tell it is unusually hard to record a multipart piece one part at a time, so that it'd stay at sync and sound good.

And he's done tens of pieces like this set for everything from 2-part to maybe 5-part.

In fact cant we just grab some music from the various T1/2 mission's with the authors permission..?

Of course it could be a nice and easy way to go, if the authors would provide their permission. But considering that we are not allowed to use any trademarked material from the original game, even the characters' names, I doubt such a permission can be granted.

Maybe I'll try to record select pieces with my keyboard and samples for the original instruments. Cannot promise any useful outcome though, as I am quite an amateur as a performer, and this multipart thing is quite challenging. Also sampled instruments may or may not sound natural, hard to tell in advance.

ok, I'm exploring some more resources with royalty-free music.

here's a site of a guy who recorded a bit of music you might like (i think it is sampled, but still sounds quite good):

http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?keywords=medieval&Search=Search

it seems when downloading, you get better quality than playing back from the site.

Sorry I should have said T1/2 fan made missions.

I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.

I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).
