Before installing TDM, do I need to remove Resurrection of Evil somehow?

All right, I picked the steam.exe shortcut option and it worked fine. Installed the Training mission, then it ran just fine. A little slow, but it ran fine. I'm only getting ~30 FPS in the Training mission, whereas Doom 3 ran at ~60. Turned off some graphics options (well, dumbed them down) and still get 30 FPS. I hope that's not its "regular speed", because even when it hits ~60 FPS (when I'm looking at a single wall with no detail, let's say) it's still "choppy". Not fun to play like that...

Personally, I think that 30 fps is a long shot from choppy, but that may just be me.

I think your bottleneck is not graphics performance, but CPU. Doom 3 had ultra-stupid AI. TDM has advanced AI with advanced pathfinding, more physics objects per map, and bigger maps.

I hope it's not my CPU. It's an AMD six-core 1055T. And 30 FPS gets choppy when it's got that micro-lag/stuttering problem that seems to be cropping up in video games more and more lately: Metro 2033, Dragon Age II, and now TDM. Weird.

Not only has the FPS gone up, but the stuttering/lag is much less noticeable (gone, even).

And I turned VSYNC OFF, and I put those command parameters in doomcfg.cfg that nbohr1more suggested. Definite improvement.

Yeah, it's in the nvidia control panel under 3d settings. Please note, that it only makes sense to use tripple buffering together with vsync. Otherwise there won't be any gain.

It's exactly those micro-lags, that I suffered from too. vsync and triple buffering fixed it for me. Also consider closing some performancehungry programs before running TDM. I noticed that my Opera (with 25+ tabs) is quite the fps killer to TDM.

Okay, good, thanks for the tips, guys. This might help some other games, where I am "forced" to turn VSync OFF because of the framerate "problem" (micro-stuttering, more than low FPS) and have to watch screen tearing frequently, but it plays smoother, it just doesn't look smoother. Funny, isn't it?

Why do we choose to work with these things again (PCs)?!?! Oh, right, the customizability. :wub:{Right, hang in there, just.....hang....in....there....}

One last tweak...

As you have an nVidia video card, we have seen weird behaviors when "Threaded Processing" is enabled. Try disabling this option and see if you have any further improvement in either performance or stability. :)

Hyperthreading: In the BIOS??

Or Multicore?

Now it just crashes...a LOT. Twice while trying to save, once upon launch, once upon installing The Rift FM, once while playing...I'm giving up for now. Even tried restoring all NVidia settings back to default, but still having problems. Tried updating TDM to make sure all files were "OK", but it said everything was up to date. Very frustrating. :(

Any error messages when it crashes or is it just a crash to desktop?

There are some debug variables that you can turn on that will output to log file that might help but I'm not sure where those are.

Don't give up yet, we'll get there.

I always assumed I'd taste like boot leather.

Sorry to hear that.

Normally the "Threaded Optimizations" are as much of a problem for nVidia folk as Catalyst AI is for ATI users.

Perhaps your configuration is the reverse for some reason. The only other crash factor I have seen is multi-monitor acceleration, but now my faith in the traditional advice is shaken and I dare not relay any more of it.

Also set "Multi-display/Mixed GPU acceleration" to "Single display performance mode"

(from the FAQ)

I can only otherwise recommend that you ensure that the latest motherboard chipset drivers are installed. AMD and nVidia, being adversaries, often make each others' lives miserable with their first release drivers. We saw this for ATI cards on the nForce motherboards and I'm sure the reverse is also true. Eventually, the folks who stick to their guns and do not trade their hardware in for a matching pair complain enough and the drivers or BIOS gets fixed. Graphics hardware is a dirty industry :(

Things seem to have returned to "normal", although I don't remember some of the lit-up areas looking so washed out as to be "strangely-lit" around some light sources near the beginning of The Rift, but at the least the crashes have stopped. I reverted all (except for a few) NVidia settings back to default, pretty much where I think they were before I started messing with them.

This all started when I used the QuickSave button (F4 by default) to save my progress. I seem to (now, in hindsight) remember someone posting to avoid using the QuickSave button...anyone else having problems? It seems my QuickSave file got corrupted somehow, as it finally got to the point that the game would either not load at all, or it would take over 2 minutes of "loading" and I would just give up on it and force-terminate the program through TM.

I loaded up The Outpost and The Crown of Penitence (I think the FAQ listed them as good starting missions to try out my skills on first), but they still play sluggishly. I'm going to call it quits for the evening and try again tomorrow, or the next night....

Are there any missions that you folks would suggest as good-story/well-built ones that would "showcase" TDM's abilities and drawing power...one(s) that would be good first-experience material? Thanks for the help, guys.

Some people used to have an issue with quicksaves crashing, but I think that was fixed a while back. I've never had any trouble with quicksaves, personally.

I would recommend "The Builder's Influence". A medium-sized map with a good story and straightforward gameplay.

Hello, Since this track is originally from TDM,i think it's better to ask here than TTLG. Do you guys have the full version of this ambient track?

      Bachelor Mapping Challenge!
The girlfriend will be away to her mum's place for almost a week, which means more mapping time for me! I'm planning a speed build. Hope it will go my way
I'm starting by downloading 2.11. Don't know if I'm going to use any fancy new stuff. Just want to crack those itching map muscles that has gone dry and dead since almost a year's worth of no-mapping

The cool part of Canonical's Snap, is that my machine can now ray-trace an entire (simple) scene faster than it takes the web browser to start!

      Fm idea (braindump)
"Experience the life of a mission builder"
Esentially there are finnished elements placed somewhere in storage in the game and you have to place them in the correct places, build some walls here and there, add guard routes, give them their correct speech lines, etc. Decorate the places.. all in-game. lots of fun.. 😉
If you do it right in the end you can play the mission.
(would be even cooler if a thief-ai could play the mission, making it some kind of tower-defence game)

This first started as an idea for an aquarium builder mission where-in you have to fill an empty aquarium with sand, waterplants, castles water and swimming fish. But above idea is more fun.

Dear ChatGPT, What are The Builders in the Dark Mod?

The Builders is a popular game mode in the video game community called "Dark Mod," which is a fan-made tribute to the classic "Thief" series of stealth games. In this game mode, players assume the role of builders who construct structures in a dark and ominous environment while trying to avoid detection by patrolling guards.
The Builders game mode is unique in that it offers players the opportunity to create and design their own levels using the in-game tools and resources provided. Players can experiment with different building materials, construct intricate traps and puzzles, and create their own unique gameplay experiences.
While The Builders game mode is not an official part of the Dark Mod, it has become one of the most popular and well-loved aspects of the game, thanks to its emphasis on creativity, strategy, and stealth.

You guys did not know that, did you?
