TDM upside-down

So i'm on laptop with ati6770. And screen was upside-down until i disabled post-processing (what a fail?), but my skies are still upside-down, and there are no way to turn off catalyst a.i. in driver. What should i do, and how you managed to achieve such outstanding bugs? In doom 3 everything is ok.

This is not a bug in TDM, many Doom 3 Mods that use enhanced graphics shaders report similar issues happening on ATI cards. Again, this is an ATI issue and not a TDM bug...so it's out of our control. ATI has been made aware of it by various users of Doom 3 Mods, but they don't appear interested in fixing it. It has something to do with Catalyst AI doing some weird optimizations...

Our FAQ outlines a few issues, but this one may be the one for you. :)

This might be more relevant if you are having the same Skybox issues that I suffered from!

To add to the discussion:

ATI Catalyst drivers past 10.11 no longer appear to properly disable Catalyst AI.

In general there are two workarounds:

1) Use a 3rd party tool like Radeon Pro to disable it.

2) Rename the executable (for Doom 3 this would be darkathena.exe).

For option 2 to work with The Dark Mod, you would need to place the map pk4 into The Dark Mod base and open it via the "map" command in the console.

Tracker 2725 was opened because the ability to specify a different executable name is broken in the Windows TDM_Launcher: http://bugs.angua.at/view.php?id=2725

From now, there are no such option.

Search the web for the free "ATI Tray Tools" by Ray Adams.

Install that on your laptop, then look through it for the means to control Catalyst AI. That's where you can disable it.

I can no longer disable Catalyst AI using ATI's control panel, but I've disabled it using Tray Tools.

Once you disable it, your sky will paint rightside-up and all will be good in the world.

Edit: Once Tray Tools is in your Windows tray, do this:

1. Right-click it.

2. Select Direct 3D->Catalyst AI->Off.

I recommend adding the information not yet in the wiki FAQ.. Verified methdos that are known to work.

I've been worried to update my video drivers anymore, but if the solutions do work then nice.

I added the Tray Tools reference to the "upside-down screen" section of the Wiki page.

Edit: I moved it down to the section where Radeon Pro is discussed.

I also cleaned up some grammar/spelling issues in the Troubleshooting section while I was in there.

You don't need to uninstall CCC to use Tray Tools though many do to improve overall system performance. Sometimes if CCC is not installed Tray Tools will not be able to change certain graphic options but usually newer versions will fix this. My AGP drivers don't like Tray Tools but many have praised the software (it did work well for my old Radeon 9500 Pro...)

I just did a quick google search for some linux programs allowing for advanced driver configuration. I didn't find anything apparently. But boy, how can they remove Catalyst AI from their CCC? There are problems with games and Catalyst AI EVERYWHERE!!! Minecraft, TDM, Warhammer, CoD MW2, WoW for instance and all of those games are pretty famous.

Good thing, I decided to go for nvidia again: EVGA Geforce 560 Ti Superclocked. :)

Though i think any ai is shit, including catalyst one, i don't have problems with anything except darkmod. Ding...

I'm not sure what you're trying to say with the 'ding' at the end...are you trying to tell us that it's something we did wrong? If that's the case then you're saying every doom 3, quake 4, and ET:QW mod out there with post processing effects has done it wrong. Catalyst AI and mods have not gotten along for years, it's a well documented issue and so far the only solution has been to disable catalyst ATI. The first bloom mods that came out for D3 years ago suffered the same issue of being upside down, when sky boxes were added to D3 by modders Catalyst AI caused them to rotate with the player view.

The ball is in ATI's court. If they won't fix it there's not much we can do, and now that they've disabled the ability to even turn off catalyst ATI...they've really screwed a lot of players over.

Graphics card manufacturer's are responsible for providing standards compliant hardware. It's not the fault of game developers if hardware agnostic instructions yield different results on different hardware. ATI should address the issue and if they refuse, you shouldn't support them with your money. The alternative is for you to get your hands dirty and learn how to write shaders.

I'd have to check the exact version, but the fairly-recent Catalyst drivers I have installed definitely have the ability to disable Catalyst AI, and I have played TDM successfully without needing ATI Tray Tools or any third-party software. I have noticed it has a tendency to re-enable itself however, but I don't remember if this correlates with driver updates or some other operation.

I have the newest ATT version (1.7.9.1564) from Computerbase, and there is no such option. In the 3D settings > Additional section I can switchCatalyst AI between "High Quality", "Quality" and "Performance". Which one should I choose? Can you help me on this?

Go cry to ATI... The team can't do anything about them fucking up drivers! As I already said earlier, there are numerous games that request Catalyst A.I. to be disabled, but incidentally you only play one of them and you state that it's the fault of the game, rather than of the driver.

Layman's logic, unfortunately. If the power company randomly changed the supply voltage and certain devices stopped working, people would continue to blame the manufacturers of those devices even after having it repeatedly explained to them that the devices were designed to specification and the power company's action was the problem.

Sadly it seems that the less knowledge one has about an issue, the more one is convinced that one has all the answers.

Here:

http://www.doom3world.org/phpbb2/download/file.php?id=416

This file is a Bloom shader that doesn't go upside-down when used in Doom 3 with Catalyst AI.

Download the above file and compare the ARB shader code to what is in the TDM Base.

Then get cracking on fixing TDM's shader code...

Or perhaps... Rebb, JC Denton, and OrbWeaver already tried their best and they were unable to do it and keep the desired performance and functionality...

...Can do any better?

No guarantee that would work with our current systems, or if it would perform as well. JC optimized everything as best as he could.

That statement was directed at Mr Vorob.

He seems to feel that the Shader could be improved.

If so, he would have to do better than at least four of the most renowned Doom 3 ARB shader programmers (Sikkpin has also had problems with Catalyst AI).

Finally got my PC back from the shop after my SSD got corrupted a week ago and damaged my motherboard. Scary stuff, but thank goodness it happened right after two months of FM development instead of wiping all my work before I could release it. New SSD, repaired Motherboard and BIOS, and we're ready to start working on my second FM with some added version control in the cloud just to be safe!

I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.

I've finally managed to log in to The Dark Mod Wiki. I'm back in the saddle and before the holidays start in full, I'll be adding a few new FM articles and doing other updates. Written in Stone is already done.
