Player "freezes" temporarily

I didn't see anything about this in any of the wiki's but hopefully the problem is not unique to me.

Sometimes me/the player/the thief (what's the right way to refer to the game self? :) freezes. The game continues. It's not a full game freeze, I just can't move although I can pan around with the mouse. It usually lasts about 20-30 seconds and then things return to normal. Attempts to move are "lost" but one "jump" is remembered and is executed after the freeze.

System is Fedora 14 x86_64 w/ Nvidia 450GTS.

Other than that I have to say I'm very impressed and I'm glad I found this site as I really missed the Thief series.

Well, actually, I do have one other thing... What's the best way to take care of undead? It seemed to take multiple holy water arrows unless hitting them while they're dormant doesn't count and fire arrows are loud and an expensive (supply wise) way to take care of them. Flash bombs and mines didn't seem to have much effect but I thought I remembered that working in the original series...

Thanks,

Richard

Perhaps you are getting stuck in map geometry?

Try opening the console and typing noclip then see if you can fly out of whatever you've got stuck in.

Then use noclip again to return to normal control.

Welcome!

I can't speak to the player freeze. Perhaps someone else can. I haven't read any reports of this, nor have I experienced it myself.

A couple holy water arrows should kill the undead. Might take one or two more for the revenant.

By design, flash bombs and flash mines don't bother the undead.

Exploding mines have been upgraded in the next rev of TDM (1.07) to be more reliable.

the freezes are sometimes caused by patches intersecting the plane of a visportal either directly or indirectly, had a few in my oakvillage map, changing patches into func_statics seams to reduce the problem. It seams the player gets stuck to the plane of the visportal then after a while the player gets released.

taken me a couple of months to work out what was causing the freezing.

I've never heard of this. Does it happen for you in all maps? Is it always the same place or is it random?

You have to be very accurate, but I beleive a single sword swipe to the head.. Ive taken down many a haunt this way..

On yer freezing if its just yer map, then either myself or serps would need a look..

If you're taking down a revenant with a single hit, then there's a bug somewhere. :)

meh... just coz youz aint got the wikid sword skillz like I haz....

But seriously if you sneak up on a haunt and then if you aim just right and hit the haunt on the side of the head (at ear height) they are down in a single blow!

Makes me wonder if a texture isn't set to the right material...I wonder if the back of the head still registers as "cloth" instead of undead skin. I'll have to check that.

Thanks to everyone for replying so quickly. Since so many did I'll try to answer en'mass instead of individually.

I've only tried a couple of maps, starting with the training mission. In that one it seemed to happen most often in the jumping/climbing/mantling area. Once with nothing around me. It did seem like I was "attached" to something.

It also happened to me in NHAT #1 when I was underwater but still "floating" downstream and then again when going up for air at the stalactites.

I'll try noclip and see if it helps. Also, what's up with the default ~ for putting away weapons? I guess it's the same as the original series but it also brings up the console which is a bit awkward.

Thanks,

Richard

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
