William Steele

I'm going out on a very shaky termite-riddled limb ...

I've begun work on the first mission in a new campaign, about a fellow named William Steele. I've finished the storyline and fleshed out the main characters. The story spans the entire campaign.

Two previously-announced missions, Cleighmoor and Home Again, are now part of the Steele campaign.

And here comes the shaky limb bit, where I set myself up for massive failure ...

#1 - In the North
#2 - Home Again
#3 - Cleighmoor
#4 - The Warrens
#5 - Commerce Bank
#6 - Baleford Museum
#7 - The Builders' Forge
#8 - At Wood's End

Completion levels as of July 10, 2020:

#1 - In the North - complete
#2 - Home Again - complete
#3 - Cleighmoor - complete
#4 - The Warrens - complete
#5 - Commerce Bank - complete
#6 - Baleford Museum - 90%
#7 - The Builders' Forge - 90%
#8 - At Wood's End - 50%

This work will be interspersed with coding work, so the overall timeline is so far out that my grandchildren will probably have to pick up where I leave off.

On the one hand you've set the bar pretty high for yourself, but on the other hand, if you look at previous T2 authors, there are plenty of authors that have put out 8 or more missions (or around that number) ... Yandros, Belboz, Christine, OttoJ55, frobber, etc. So it's not as insanely impossible as some people sometimes claim.

I might go so far to say (just guessing) that looking at the stats it might be more likely for a dedicated individual to pull off a series than a group. (There are more successful indiv. series than group series, of which only T2X got completed).

I think it'll come down to if you have the IRL conditions in your favor to work on it all the way through, and that you don't lose your motivation. In my experience, motivation is a function of how well and fully your plan is scripted out, so you always know exactly what to do next, and step-wise building.

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

This is exciting! Is Cleighmoor really that close to completion? I wait in anticipation =3

Good luck with this grayman. As demagogue says, there is an advantage in going it alone and it also helps if the levels are not too big. We've already had mappers produce three or four more FMs so it is possible.

Fantastic! It would rock if you succeed grayman

I'm very confident. Having the story idea and characters already set to build upon is a huge step done imo. - and really not the easiest one!

You get all my fingers crossed! ... And don't forget to post updates whenever you feel and in need of new spirit, energy and motivation from us taffer fellows :)

Best of luck with your plans! Since Sotha has already made a small campaign all by himself, it has been proven that it can be done.

Come the time of peril, did the ground gape, and did the dead rest unquiet 'gainst us. Our bands of iron and hammers of stone prevailed not, and some did doubt the Builder's plan. But the seals held strong, and the few did triumph, and the doubters were lain into the foundations of the new sanctum. -- Collected letters of the Smith-in-Exile, Civitas Approved

Good luck Grayman. I produced NHAT in 9 months - that's 3 massive malloc error pushing missions. IT CAN BE DONE! I only had to give up playing video games.

If I were to go back and do it again, after having learned mainly how to build optimally (half the build time on ANOOT was literally restructuring rooms and finding new visportaling techniques, since the first pass was so sloppy), I could see myself doing it all in 5 months.

Of course, MD helped a LOT with optimizing, scripting, bug fixing, etc. I could not recommend getting a co mapper, technical helper enough! I was a creative force, MD was a technical force - it worked out well for us!

Anyway, this has turned out to be a somewhat fragmented post. GOOD LUCK!!!!

Sounds like a great project Grayman, good luck. One question though, will you release the missions individually first, as they are completed, or wait until everything is done?

Individually. If there's anything about an individual release that later bothers the campaign aspect, the problem will be fixed in an update.

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
