The Dark Mod Forums

Public Appreciation

Recommended Posts

I just wanted to publically thank nbohr1more for doing such a great job with PR for TDM. Every time I do a search for "the dark mod", I stumble on forum after forum where he has posted regular updates about what is going on here, in an attempt to introduce new people to the mod. It's a great example of how you don't have to be a mapper or developer to find important ways to help out.

Thanks again, nbohr1more! :)

Thanks Springheel and all! :)

Yes, it is a little tedious... especially because I'm too dumb to write a program that logs me into all those forums at once and posts my reply to all simultaneously. (Well, it would be less fun because I wouldn't get to check for new comments, etc).

When you consider that the first link that comes up for a Google search of "Thief Mod" is this site, I'd say that speaks to how often this mod is recommended to Thief players. People who love The Dark Mod love getting other folks to try it.

Thanks again :)

Yep, thanx to niels bohr no more, for all the PR (and the atomic model :D

"no more" ?

Does that mean that I'm like Schrödinger's cat where I'm here and not here at the same time

Strangely, Neils Bohr would be the first one to tell you that any atomic model is inaccurate and that the human mind is inadequate to imagine how Quantum interactions work. He likened developing mental models of sub-atomic activity to building Idols of Gods based on how you imagine they look. ^_^

I'll get back to the PR... B)

No, it means I am sleepy, it was a long day, my fingers are tired, too, and the keyboard provided too much resistance, amplified by the incident involving coffee and grime, and so the "e" was dropped from "one" during typing...

You better do :P

Bohr was a guest lecturer in one of my dad's classes at college... somewhere in the mid-1960s. It was stunning for him because he was already a far-away legend then, so it was even more intriguing to me. (Then again there's a photo of him being held by a ~98 year old veteran of the US Civil War when he was an infant, so... it's a crazy world.)

I wish I understood quantum physics. I always imagined rather than a wave spreading out in space, space got squeezed "inside" the particle, so what looks like non-local effects, distant entanglement, & superpositions to us is just an illusion of our perspective, but physics-knowledgeable friends have told me this is absurd, or better translated in terms of the parallel universes or branching spacetime.

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

Your abstraction sounds like an inverse holographic universe concept. It seems as valid as any other hard to fathom abstraction so why not? As long as you can match your concept to all the parameters and behaviors of the Standard Model it doesn't matter how you conceive it.

I personally like to believe that space-time has some sort of Gödel style infinite recursion where every particle contains the whole universe... and the whole universe is destroyed and rebuilt like the flicker of the FPS rate in a video game except to the march of Planck time.

Since nBohr is obviously doing a good job at it, how about some reward like no more admin approval on moddb and an adminship at TDM-facebookpage?

Sounds a lot like the explanation why everything goes crazy out of control in the movie "Event Horizon"... ;)

  • 3 weeks later...

Just thought I'd add my praise here for the hard workin', ever lovin' nbohr too...

Also - I love the main site redesign - that was a pleasant surprise!

Will turn the bullet from your coat,

Or ward the tulwar's downward blow

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
