Not sure if they notice a door that is closed but unlocked.

 

They do not. There is a "should_always_be_locked" spawnarg, but it's used to make sure AI lock doors behind them once they've gone through, if they have a key for the door or a "can_unlock" spawnarg for that door.

From what I understand of the article, it is a basic description of the engine, what the mod seems to accomplish, how the AI is like etc.

Coming up with generic behaviour for that situation is not easy.

 

Yep, now that you mention it, it doesnt seem easy to solve... The only reasonable way to avoid the "blank stare at door" scenario would be to have mappers always creating alternative routes for AI to fall to once they have been pickpocketed (after a "Oh, I seem to have lost my key" kind of reaction), but that would brake already existing maps like Lucia, and thus highly problematic... The only other way I see for this would be to have the AI going into full alert whenever he realises the theft ("There's foul play here" kind of reaction, like spotting a weapon or being hit by an arrow), enough to send him running for help, bring reinforcements and the whole show; but even then they would have to fall back to normal behaviour eventually (right?), and that would make it very unforgiving, if not impossible to ghost a mission, specially when you pickpocket a key that you dont know where the respective door is, the AI is bound to get there first and then raise the alarm, and there's nothing you can do to avoid that but to KO or kill him.

 

Still, IMHO, I'm all for realism and challenge, and in an ideal situation I would still choose that second alternative over having the AI ignore something so flagrant as having their keys stolen. I will probably take this suggestion to the AI topic though.

If only there was a way to instantly copy keys in a steampunk world, then you'd add the challenge of actually putting the key back into the AI before he notices (or maybe drop it on his previous path?)

 

He would try to open the door, notice, exclaim "this is funny" then search back, and find the key near his route on the floor.

Then go into alert if he doesn't find the key at the start of his route.

 

But then again, this "realism" thing is a no issue to me.

Relighting was originally in v1.0 but didn't work reliably until 1.06. In v1.06 a vast number of improvements were made to relighting behavior as well.

AI relighting torches. Is this new in 1.07? I've never noticed this before.

 

That was sort of the key improvement of 1.06...not sure how we could have promoted it any more than we did (though you might not have noticed the actual behaviour in maps until more recently). :)

It seems the old bug where performance is sometimes bad when you sometimes start a mission still exists. I loaded up House of Theo on my GT440 system and the FPS was about 15-20 at the start. Then I reloaded it with the exact same settings and it was perfectly smooth (40 FPS plus).

Guess I need to do it in front of a guard on patrol to see it happen myself.

The light you douse has to be set up by the map author for relighting. If it isn't, passing AI will say something similar to your card player, and will make no effort to relight the light. The wall torches in Sons were already set up for this, but not all flames/lights are.

Some lights in aStS are set to be "always_on" if you want to see it in action. The:

 

 

campfire in front of Syke's hideout and the wall torch by the stairs to Down St.

are two I know of for sure. Also the torch above the step-stool by the

dice-players.

 

 

Note that even then AI are not guarrunteed to relight a light that's out...they usually have a percentage chance to notice/care.

      i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
      tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

      Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

      I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
      Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

      Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
