The BBC nicked one of our sounds

Just watching "The bleak old shop of stuff" when when the main character played by "Robert Webb" gets out of the cuboard in the lawyers office, the sound I here is non other than

- sound/sfx/world/doors/door_open_3.ogg

Where did we get the sound from, did we make it ourselfs if so then the BBC nicked our sound and I we should be sending them an email for using without permission.

The BBC has a whole department (maybe more) devoted to creating new sound effects, so chances are it's the other way around as NH suggests.

This reminds me though, I was watching a BBC documentary and could have sworn one of the sound effects was from the original Thief games. I think it was the one about the earths core where Richard Hammond gets into a submarine. Probably just sounds very similar.

I've heard some "thief" sounds on tv here and there over the years. Probably from same unlicensed free sources, ancient sound effect depositories that still work well in some cases.

Many places have stock libraries. This is why you'll find some sounds being used by different places throughout time. One of the most widely used SFX libraries is http://sound-ideas.com/. The quality is great, and it's a royalty free license, ie - once you buy the library you can use the sounds however, and how many times you want without any further monetary expense.

If you notice you'll see the BBC collection. Most of the studios I've worked at have the "General 6000" series at a minimum. They are all fantastic libraries.

This is exactly like play "King Arthurs Gold". There it is the standard dying sound - so you can't shock me with all these repeatings :P Good Indie game tip btw

Oh my god. The Wilhelm scream is THE WORST GODDAMN SOUND EFFECT in the history of the world. I'm not kidding how pissed I get whenever I hear that same whiny scream in some movie and I immediately think less of it.

I know in some movies it classifies as sort of a tribute to the dude in question, but I think it's, more often than not, just plain stupid and insulting to the viewer. It doesn't sound right, it just doesn't.

In closing: IT DOESN'T SOUND RIGHT, JUST STOP USING IT!

In fact, if there's one thing I would change in the world of movie-making, it's to abolish that sound. Just throw it into a pit of boiling acid and forget it ever existed.

And yes, it's also shocking how we all seem to sit on one common source of sounds for games, movies and other auditory media.

You'll also notice this if you ever somehow end up watching one of those incredibly dumb shows on TV that depict like- "close call" events where some animal mauls a person and they just get away in the nick of time, and they plaster these clips with, what I guess is, "Hollywood SFX CD 2" or something. :D

Actually I once saw a document where there was a lot of discussion about the wilhelm scream. It is some sort of joke among the audio people, I believe.

Yeah, that's what I meant.

I know it is, but it sounds just as bad. I mean, it's a pretty jarring hearing that in a movie that otherwise has great audio. It's like: Was the joke really worth it?

Can anyone point me to some free or public domain repositories as Ive been waiting for a while for some of the stock sounds to be replaced, but as the saying goes 'if you want something doing you gotta do it yerself'

http://www.freesound.org/

They are Creative Commons-licensed, which means you can use them freely but have to credit the author. I have already used a few of them for Dark Mod sound effects.

At least the BBC didn't use "I'll piss where I wanna piss!" -_-

Come the time of peril, did the ground gape, and did the dead rest unquiet 'gainst us. Our bands of iron and hammers of stone prevailed not, and some did doubt the Builder's plan. But the seals held strong, and the few did triumph, and the doubters were lain into the foundations of the new sanctum. -- Collected letters of the Smith-in-Exile, Civitas Approved

(Even though I think this filmlet is really neat and entertains everyone) it contains the Thief footsteps for the outdoors in the last scene, just see / ehar yourself :)

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
