Is my video card good enough?

Hello,

the mod looks awesome but can I play it with a Geforce 8400GS? The card is incredibly weak, however it lets me play Team Fortress 2 and Cod 4 MW at low settings.

I currently don´t even have Doom3 installed, don´t know how that would run with the card.

Should I try it or can I forget it anyway?

I was using my 8600GTS with 512 BM vram when I first got the mod installed.

It was OK. I played TF2 on maybe medium settings (a bit laggy).

Some of the older missions aren't as well optimized but it's a lot slower paced than tf2 also, so a little lag or slower framerate isn't as noticeable for sure.

Plus back then we didn't have quality settings. Now we have more settings for better performance on lower end hardware.

I'd say go for it, tons of fun maps to play. If it's unbareable at least you tried.

Morning Chaps

This is a subject I know quite a bit about as I get asked for advice on the subject over at ttlg.

The 8400m GS which I happen to have in my laptop, its just about powerful enough to play the most demanding thief2 fm's, and will play some of the smaller TDM missions. COD/TF are low end DX9 games somewhere in between T2 and TDM, which is why your able to run it reasonably well.

I assume your 8400 is in a laptop, is it upgradeable..?

What is your CPU and how much RAM do you have? I used to play on a 7600GS, and my biggest bottlenecks were a crappy CPU and 1.75 GB of memory. If I ran "killall monsters", I got great FPS. Lots of AIs in an area will slow down a system with a poor processor.

Give it a try. Since you have Doom 3, you have nothing to lose but a few disk swaps and a few hours to acquire TDM.

You can also use "tdm_lg_interleave 3" to get a 5-or-so FPS boost on lower end systems. It decreases the amount of times your visibility is calculated per rendered frame.

When I overclocked that old 7600GS, it didn't do squat for my frames-per-second, but when I OC'd the CPU to 2.4 GHz from 2.2, it made a pretty significant speed improvement, noticeable immediately.

In personal opinion the dark mod is very, very heavy mod.

I've played it with a good notebook: t9400, 4 gb ram ddr 2 800mhz, 9600gt 512m ram and in a lot of mission i have often 15-20 fps average (sometimes 12 fps). Meanwhile in doom 3 with highest detail i've 60 fps fixed.

even with the PC Desktop: i5 760 3,5 ghz (quad core), 4 gb ram 1600 mhz 7-8-7-24, HD6870 i've sometimes 25-27 fps.

So, knowing your card, i think you will have a lot of problem to play acceptably this game. :(

---------------------

P.S. your other components not are so bad. So, if you change your card, for example with an economic HD5770, you can play a lot of games at high details. ;)

Thanks for all the replies ;)

"What is your CPU and how much RAM do you have?"

I have 4GB and an Intel duo @3GHZ. It´s a desktop PC and my good video card died.

I think I´ll wait till I someday have a better vc, I´m not really a fan of messing around with configs etc. and 15-25 FPS is not really what I consider playable ^^

Well can´t hurt anyway, then I´ll play a newer, even better version I´m sure :D

Yeah, I hear that. Those of us who are into action/twitch first-person games have come to hate anything below 40 or 50 FPS.

My cheap $55 GT440 runs TDM very well though. It is a low end, though new card. Also, maybe you have a friend with a dead Geforce 9xxx series card laying around. Such a card could possibly be fixed with a heat gun and some thermal paste, the way I did.

Just thought I would give a few suggestions for a cheap solution.

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
