Yeah that drop sucks and is still funny in a sucky way... I'd hope you could get a refund, especially since it was their fault.

It reminds me when we were getting our kitchen counter re-done not too long ago with some granite-looking top. The guy put the sink trough on top of it and drew a pencil line around its outline, cut it out, smeared glue along the edges, and then when he was placing the sink in it, it just fell straight through on to the ground haha. He forgot to leave a little buffer to actually hold the sink up. Sucked for him because it was his fault, and it was like a $200 top he just ruined and then he had to get another $200 one to recut at his expense... But everybody felt bad for him.

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

Well, I did grab my map file right away, but I thought if I left my computer idling while I ran out for a HD it would still be OK in half an hour. DOH!

I got the most important thing, the rest is just more of a pain in the butt now.

Thumbnail drives can fail too.

All three systems failing at the same time is somewhat unlikely :) One is stored in my bedroom, the other at a different property (which I go to once a month to check the tenant isn't destroying the place or letting the garden die, allowing me to cycle them.). System has worked perfectly for nearly 3 years, that said - I've never had to actually restore anything either.

The reason that online stuff is terrible is quite simple, a lot of the cheaper outfits are just resellers, a lot of the guys who they are agents for then use data warehousing companies or CDN's to actually do the storage. You have three layers of failure, since you cant deal directly with the middleman should the first guy decide to call it quits, let alone try to influence the higher layers. You also have no idea how duplicated your data is, where exactly it is stored, who has physical access etc.

Just like when megaupload died, the data was stored upstream, but it's only the legitimate user who gets screwed in an instant, by something inexorable.

LOL Reminds me on a (nearly disaster) story in my apartment. The heating was dripping a little. Luckily, they had to drain the entire heating system for the building anyway, because somewhere else a pipe inside the wall burst. So a guy comes in and wants to replace the pipe and valve that leads to it. He's starting to work and seeing that he put a tiny clothpiece under the valve, I ask him "don't you want to place something under it?" He says "hm, actually that should work", but I rush to the kitchen and fetch a large bowl. Placed it under the value, and he hasn't even fully started to turn the nut on the pipe as about 2..3 litre piutch-black muddy water sludge rush out :D

(Actually, I should have let him do it his way, that way I'd have gotten the rug replaced as the entire floor would have certainly ruined from the black water.... ^_^

There is also the story where they tried to clean the pipes leading down behind the kitchen wall - that didn't end so good. Craftspeople

Can you even put laptop HD in a desktop? I guess they fit in a floppy slot eh?

Well, thanks, but I just got my HD in from New Egg.

Put it in, it fired up. So yeah, dropping an HD probably isn't good, lol. Formatting now but I chose not to go with 'fast formatting' and man is it slow!

Couple days and everything should be sorted and running nice. I'm thinking about throwing windows on this one. My boot HD is a WD raptor, 10,000 rpm, but even though they advertised a 3.0 transfer speed, that early model was somehow locked to 1.5 :(

So I don't know, will running the OS on a 7500 with 3.0 connect speed be faster than a 10000 at 1.5, and does it matter? I'll have the OS on it's own partition like it is now.

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
