T3 Editor Is Released!

Subjective Effect

Recommended Posts

Remember to credit me, and I'll make Dram the only other badass character in my TDM FM...if it ever gets made....!:D He'll be an unrelenting assassin, or merciless extortionist, or heartless salesman of comfortable thiefswear...

Hylix.

Edit: I realised sometime after this post that I should clarify something...when I say "if it ever gets made" I meant my FM, not TDM...I don't know how many seemingly great ideas have gone the way of the dodo merely because I was simply to lazy to finish them. Of course, that is working under the assumption that they were, in fact, great.... :P

LOL, yeah, assassin - sounds good lol

So this is just ridicoulous to assume that just because you are not a payed member of a game company, that you can't be better

I'll second that. I'm a programmer myself (although not for games) and I've met people who get paid to write code and who suck at it. I have all the confidence that if I wanted to write something for fun, then I could do a good job at it, follow reasonable design and development principles and treat it just like something I was getting paid to do.

The one difference I do see between being paid and not being paid is that if you're being paid to do something, then you're likely to finish it. Even if you get bored with your work, you're probably still going to do it because you want money. If you lose interest or get bored with a hobby, you'll just stop. On the other hand, if you're really excited about doing something, then that can have a better impact on your work than whether or not you're getting paid.

So, for you brave TDM souls, it's no money, but hopefully this fan's appreciation will help keep you going :-). I for one am more excited about TDM than any FMs made with the TDS editor.

No one should be asking "are you having second thoughts now that T3 Ed is released"? Anyone who's played that hack-job of a game engine and compared it with the pre-rendered looks and the sleek inner workings of Doom 3 knows there is simply no comparison. The name Garrett doesn't matter then, especially when FM authors can make their own Garret if they want, without getting in to the trouble that we would.

Not to say that I didn't hink T3 wasn't an awesome game in general. It's just that its game engine is an prime example of severe suckage.

Well, for some Thief fans it matters if their character is called Garret or something else. Don't know why though, because I'm not emotionally attached to Garret in such a way. I care for the gameplay and not for the story, because the story is just a campaign, but the gameplay is what is the interesting part. I think if the story would have sucked but the levels were the same as they were in the original Thief series, I would still have liked the game, and this is also the reason why I didn't like T3 as much. It was fun while I played it, but not enough fun that I would even THINK about playing it again. We will see if FMs with T3Ed will change that, because considering the limitations maps will be pretty small (compared to T1/T2) and when FM authors start to use load zones to get around this, I don't think that I really like this. But i have to wait and see how it really turns out.

I sincerely hope that the Dark Mod team are not discouraged by the release of T3Ed. From what I have read, Dark Mod should have fewer limitations and be true to the original Thief concept. I am still very interested in the release of Dark Mod -- so much so that I wonder if I should try to learn T3Ed or wait it out.

What would you suggest?

OK, thanks for the advice. Another way to get "good" habits would be to make some Doom 3 maps instead. I have participated in the testing of many great Thief missions already, so I have a good feel for their design. It is mainly the mechanics and the programming aspects that I need to work on.

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
