Doom3 forgot the CD-Key after some Work with DarkRadiant

Hi

As i said in the title: Yesterday i worked again a little bit with DarkRadinat ("newest" release). And today, by trying to install a fanmission i was asked about the cd-key (No problem, i own a legal cd). But: What was going wrong ? Is TDM / Darkradiant able to destroy the doom3-installation ?

Is there something i have to be aware of ?

This bug has cropped up before on my PC, and seems to be unrelated to DarkRadiant. I have been able to fix it by firing up Doom3/TDM in offline mode, and entering the CD key if it asks for it. After that, everything is fine for a few months.

Come the time of peril, did the ground gape, and did the dead rest unquiet 'gainst us. Our bands of iron and hammers of stone prevailed not, and some did doubt the Builder's plan. But the seals held strong, and the few did triumph, and the doubters were lain into the foundations of the new sanctum. -- Collected letters of the Smith-in-Exile, Civitas Approved

Errr, that's kinda strange :/

If it happens again, can you search for your 'doomkey' and/or 'xpkey' file, they should be in doom3/base. If they are missing, that's a bit worrying.

CD Key checks have been removed in the upcoming 1.08 release. But... still an issue that could be problematic if it's somehow damaging files.

  • 1 month later...

Since last night, if I try to load up a new mission, after the briefing I get a pop-up asking for my doom 3 key (I use Steam). I can play previously saved games, but can't start one from scratch. "doomkey" "xpkey" and "STEAM_doomkey" are all present in the doom3/base folder, but the first two have modification dates from earlier tonight (whereas everything else in that folder is when I installed it to this computer).

I installed mine on an external HD and anytime I want to play it on another computer, I just drag the whole folder over (TDM inside and everything) and it works fine; and since the first install it's never asked for the cdkey again. I didn't plan it that way, but it's been super convenient.

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

Go into the Doom3 directory and delete doomkey and xpkey if you have them. Go into steam, right click on Doom 3 and Verifiy integrity of game cache. This will redownload the keys that have become corrupted. This has worked for me every time.

EDIT: Also after letting steam repair those files, set the Read-Only flag on them, there's never a reason to modify them.

I always assumed I'd taste like boot leather.

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
