Got your back, all the games you mention are awesome(Doom3 is cool as is, I say) and I'm actually quite shocked to find out how many games that I like people here don't.

But you know, that's fine. People are different. :)

Also, now that it's come up in conversation, I was very close to putting Thief 1 as one of the games I really want to love but can't.

I was afraid to be hacked to death with a machete, but I'll just say it. I like Thief 2 better than 1.

Why? Because I like Thieving in areas that are actually populated by humans. It never made much sense to me why a thief would delve into catacombs and underground fortresses. It's Thief, not Indiana Jones. But then again, I feel that it's part of what Thief actually is and I should shut my pie-hole, I'm probably looking for the wrong experience in the wrong game in this specific case.

Edit: Removed stupidity... Nevermind.

Well, T1 did start as Dark Camelot ;)

But I enjoyed T2 more myself. T1 seemed spread thin/disconnected a bit when it came to enemies imo. When you played Mages Tower it was like Hammers didn't even exist. I felt T2 was wrapped around the mechanists much tighter throughout the game.

Still, not complaining about either, just liked 2 more.

Well Mage's Tower was TGold. TDP was tighter than TG.

T2 was better in gameplay and actual mission design, I'll give it that too. Their focus on well-thought-out mission design and variety and sneaking opportunities was the source of both its pro (more solid missions) and con (watered down some of the spirit of TDP). But no game can be absolutely perfect; that's what makes game criticism (sometimes) fun to talk about, at least when the game gives you a lot of fodder to talk about, as T1 & T2 do.

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

I am absolutely a Thief 1 fan. The second part seemed too clean for its own good, the sound design was less staggeringly awesome, and while it may make sense from hindsight, the story felt completely out of whack when I was playing through it. It has Life of the Party... but Thief had that segment in The Haunted Cathedral of all places, with the ledges and upper rooms in the central city section, which is more about rooftopping than the Thieves' Highway.

For me, and I will maintain it to my dying day, Thief 2 started with Calendra's Legacy. Which is almost exactly what Thief 2 should have been.

I am with Melan on that one, though I never truly loved CL — mainly because of Midnight in Murkbell but I digress, I consider Rocksbourg to be more like what T2 should have been. T1 had perfect pacing and perfect balance between missions, and it's also true with TG. It had a very immersive and mysterious world that kind of took a beating with T2 because the City felt way too clean, not as threatening and mysterious as before, and the Mechanists' technology felt far too advanced, especially the Cetus Amicus.

I have to agree the story in T2 tried to be too complex and in the end became incoherent, though it sounded very interesting and promising with its political plots. When it comes to story I prefer T3's over T2 any day. Plus I've always felt that the first few missions before First City Bank and Trust are really boring compared to T1's. I mean I never get tired of T1 even after all these years while T2 bores me quite fast, but missions from First City Bank and Trust (except Tracing, Precious Cargo and Casing) until the end are awesome, and I have to admit that Masks is actually my favorite mission in T2. :P

Baffords is special anyway, a moment in gaming history. I think most people felt something really special was going on when they got in that mission the first time.

I think my favorite of the OMs was The Sword. I just like the little surreal world it built, and my favorite missions are usually about the world they put me in before anything else. Figures one of my favorite FMs is Emilie Victor.

T2 I don't think are as good creative-wise.

Oh now- Oh you!.... Oooooooh... That's not true at all!

:)

Remains one of my most favorite cutscenes in a game EVER.

Other cutscenes are cool too, like the Viktoria one, where the cool tree branches have like impaled the corpses and they fall off.

So bad ass! :D

Guilty admission:

Metroid

I have no idea why the 8-bit incarnation of this title is so revered.

It bores me to tears.

Metal Storm from Irem blows that game away:

Also...

Mortal Kombat (original 2d) = So, it's Street Fighter 2 with crappy animated GIFs?

(I like the newer editions for the cheese factor.)

Killer Instinct = So, it's Street Fighter 2 with crappy pre-rendered CGI animated GIFs?

Gradius (series)

I am an R-Type fan, can't get into this series.

In fact, I prefer Thunderforce games to Gradius.

I'm happy with HL2 and the episodes though I've hit a rough spot in EP2 which

sapped my motivation to continue.

I "finally" installed Thief Gold because Shadow Politics looked too good to pass-up and

now I have FM euphoria... (now I won't have that "only played Thief a couple of times

at a friend's house in the early 00's" thing on my shoulders...).

Check out the Shadows of Doubt series some time. Sheer. Terror.

Thanks for the recommendation!

I've scoured a bunch of "top FM" articles and threads for generally favored missions.

I've gotta say Lord Edmund Entertains is quite a beauty so far... :)

Oh absolutely we should all be playing the classic T1 & T2 FMs. Everything we're doing is in their shadow. I've still been working on the wiki page for FM story & plot design, and so many examples of good design are coming from really good T1 & T2 storytelling FMs.* Not that they're necessarily privileged, just that there's like 600 of them, so they're such a vast repository of good ideas.

* As well as some other games; our HL1 vs HL2 debate makes an appearance.

I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.

I've finally managed to log in to The Dark Mod Wiki. I'm back in the saddle and before the holidays start in full, I'll be adding a few new FM articles and doing other updates. Written in Stone is already done.

I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).
