"One feature that people have continually asked for, is the ability to browse the most popular trending games, mods, groups and engines on the site. Until now on the homepage right menu we used to show the top few but no more. That all changes starting today, because you can now browse the most popular content. Here are the links:

To help you promote your mod, game, engine or group we have just created a few dynamic buttons for you to embed on your homepage, facebook, forums, blog etc. You will find these buttons on your mod, game, engines or groups homepage and they look like this:"

4000.png

4000.png

They are not yet "enabled" for normal users, only "developers". But I was able to change the example shown by changing the "games" path to "mods", and the numeric id to 4000, which is for TDM. So boom, there you go. Here's a serving suggestion:

<a href="http://www.moddb.com/mods/the-dark-mod" target="_blank" title="View The Dark Mod on Mod DB"><img src="http://button.moddb.com/popularity/medium/mods/4000.png" alt="The Dark Mod" />

<a href="http://www.moddb.com/mods/the-dark-mod" target="_blank" title="View The Dark Mod on Mod DB"><img src="http://button.moddb.com/rating/medium/mods/4000.png" alt="The Dark Mod" />

They'll probably add a third button to track the amount of Mod DB watchers for a particular project, and perhaps other metrics.

Highest Rated (mods): http://www.moddb.com/mods/rated (it seems to be based both on the quality and quantity of ratings. So despite TDM having 95%, it has only 183 ratings, compared to 1000+ for more popular mods, which are ranked higher on the "Top 100" list)

Most Popular (mods): http://www.moddb.com/mods/top (seems to be based on visits and total visits to the mod page)

Yeah.

I was going to add this to my Signature when I had a chance to experiment or learn more:

Please visit TDM's IndieDB site and help promote the mod:

(Yeah, shameless promotion... but traffic is traffic folks...)

The buttons work over at TTLG but site doesn't seem to have an embed interface?

See above? I just edited the URLs for the Gnomoria one. I went to TDM's page and viewed the header image to find the "4000" numeric identifier for the project.

If you build it, they will come?

Although looking at the "popularity" rank now, it looks like it's moved from ~650 to 506. Or I just wasn't paying attention.

Regardless, 506 of 17,208, that's the 97th percentile.

That is because even the most crappy "mod" for Battlefield or L4D, that was started 5 days ago and has nothing except a nicely rendered logo and a screenshot immidiately attrackts 10000 followers...

TDM is outright invisible, and unless we get on Steam etc. will forever be a niche project. In this time of impulse-buy and attention-span-of-10-seconds, the "buy Doom3" alone prevents 99% of users from ever trying it.

Even Counter-Strike, a mod from 2005, that hasn't been updated since 2008 makes it into the top 100. Sad times.

build what? It's already there, darkmod.

percentage is misleading, rank is important because I guess there are at most about 1000 mods are remarkable in moddb.

That's because it's still insanely popular to play. Up until DOTA 2 and TF2 went free to play it was the #1 most played game on the Steam network for years. Even now it always resides at #3(with dota and TF2 at 1 and 2). The game is genuinely still widely played so it's not surprising it still has Moddb profile flashes bumps simply because of its fan base. Then Counter-Strike source sits at #5!

(current players)33,690 (Peak today)53,809 Counter-Strike

^^ and this is at 6 in the morning!

Sorry for the offtopic, but I have a couple of probably silly ideas:

1) TDM team contacts with id Software in order to get a right to temporarily include the Doom3-stuff which TDM 1.08 is still needs to run standalone.

2) TDM team contacts with Valve and trying to persuade Gabe Newell to advert TDM 1.08 for free, just for a week/two, as a free indie project - i.e. with just a description + link to TDM site.

I think it would be much easier to pay some animator/modeller to make us a new zombie and characters, then go full stand-alone. Then we can just throw it up on Steam for 0.00€, and it will be included in Debian, Ubuntu etc. for free.

I know that, just trying to bring something positive in here but failed.

You mean in their repositories or something, where it still needs to be found, heard about, downloaded? With all this hype over the popularity surge that will follow going standalone, I'm interested to see how much it will actually help TDM.

Since v1.08 is not stand-alone, at this moment zero.

But Ubuntu etc. all have good application installers, and a "Game" section, so things that are in there can definitely be found by ordinary people. But first you have to make it there (by being freely available, not under some restricted-buy-d3-first scheme :)

Most of the games available are outright crap (half-finished, or just ugly, or some very simple card-games), there are only few "real" games. Imagine you bring something with the quality of TDM to the table. Under the blind the one-eyed is king :)

I wonder what's the chance of stand-alone darkmod to publish over steam under free to play section. It will be begining of golden age of darkmod I believe. :)

What about the Steam Greenlight as a tool to make TDM more popular? This subsystem is not working yet, but Valve promises it will start very soon, August 30th. Also, I wonder is it possible to integrate some Steam features like achievements (Steamworks?) into TDM? I know, technically this would be possible, but TDM is a free game, so...

ugh, achivements in TDM? worst idea ever. But just for fun, here's some achievement candidates:

"paladin" - destroy 3 undead in 1 mission with holy water

"escape artist" - lose a level 5 alert without killing anyone

"kingdom of the blind" - blind 5 enemies at once with a flashbomb.

"silent but deadly" - perform a backstab while standing on a moss patch.

"acrobat" - perform a 15 foot horizontal leap ending with a ladder or rope grab.

I'd like to track my level design progress a bit more often now, so I'm using the feed in my profile here.
I've been working intensively on Springheel's YouTube course over the past few days. I'm currently up to lesson 8. There is so much information that needs to be processed and practiced.
I have started to create my own house. As I don't have the imagination to create a good floor plan, I grabbed a floor plan generator from Watabou and experimented with it. I chose a floor plan that I will modify slightly, but at least I now have an initial idea.
I used two guards as a measuring tape: The rooms are two guards high. It turned out that I can simply double the number of boxes in DarkRadiant in grid size 8 that are drawn in the floor plan.
I practiced the simplest things on the floor plan first. Drawing walls, cutting walls, inserting doors, cutting out frames, creating VisPortals, furnishing rooms.
I have had my first success in creating a book. Creating a book was easier than I thought. I have a few ideas with books. The level I'm creating will be more or less a chill level, just for me, where I'll try out a few things. I don't have an idea for my own mission yet. I want to start small first.
For the cellar, I wanted to have a second entrance, which should be on the outside. I'm fascinated by these basement doors from the USA, I think they're called Bilco basement doors. They are very unusual in Germany, but this type of access is sometimes used for deliveries to restaurants etc., where barrels can be rolled or lifted into the cellar.
I used two Hatch Doors, but they got completely disoriented after turning. I have since got them reasonably tamed. It's not perfect, but it's acceptable.
In the cellar today I experimented with a trap door that leads to a shaft system. The rooms aren't practically finished yet, but I want to continue working on the floor plan for now. I'll be starting on the upper floor very soon.

On a lighter note, thanks to my cat-like reflexes, my superior puzzle skills and my perfect memory, I was able to beat the remastered version of "Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation" in a new superhuman record time of 23 h : 35 m, worship me!
