[SOLVED] Playing TDM standalone (without Doom 3)

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

As a long term taffer I'm very happy that the team had the courage to start making TDM work as a standalone! I'm aware there must be plenty of work left, but I dare asking about one little (I hope) thing:

It looks like half of the missions would already be playable ... if only torches would emit light. Any idea when this could be achieved ? Thanks.

Somebody that understands the technical side will have to answer about what's the issue with the torches, but I might recommend giving some priority to replacing elements which will make the most number of FMs work, or that will be visibly more important to FMs (as opposed to assets that are often hidden in back corners, as long as the FM still runs without them, unless they're easy replacements).

Or we might even have a list of the FMs closest to striking distance of getting fully standalone, and doing what we can to get them that way, one FM at a time. Then even if we aren't fully standalone, we can still have a few FMs that are playable without Doom3 to get some buzz going.

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

The torches is probably missing either light textures or the light texture shaders. It's a bit hard to tell from the console output which is which and which is missing.

I don't have any knowledge about this, all I know is I tried 2 or 3 FMs and there is something wrong with the light, most obvious is about torches: you can see the flame (some black squares above supposed to be smoke but that's OK) and no light. I guess it should be one of these http://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php?title=Standalone_Progress

This happened to me the other day, and I couldn't figure out why. Then I realized my TDM installation wasn't reading the Doom pk4 files. In the meantime, I figured out that if you set r_renderer to nv10 instead of the default "best", the torches DO emit light. It just looks like shit because nv10 is for something like Geforce 2 or 3 hardware and there is no bump mapping or specular.

I recommend getting 8 bucks together and just grabbing this. http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00006C2HA/ref=sr_1_2_olp?ie=UTF8&qid=1351104735&sr=8-2&keywords=doom+3&condition=used

Its not Steam-laiden, so you can snag a used copy. Its much better than wasting your time trying to do something that at best will constantly crash during gameplay due to missing assets like the above mentioned skeleton zombies.

+1. Got mine for £6 from Amazon UK. Never played Doom itself - not keen on splat-em-ups - but it's the best £6 I've ever spent on a game :P

Guys, using TDM with anything other than the retail version of Doom3 is not allowed by the license that we're still under as long as we're using D3 assets. I know it's exciting, but until we're fully independent of D3 assets we can't afford to support anything that contradicts our license. Any discussion of this matter will have to happen outside these forums.

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
