Should I play Thief: Deadly Shadows?

the trick when it comes to blackjacking in Thief deadly shadows is to wait until Garrett raises his arm. That was the only thing I found clunky, since you have to get closer than you did in the previous games. Same with pickpocketing. I also disliked the mission briefings being read aloud text rather than a slideshow video. That was just lazy.

Taurus philosophy:

Give me a hammer and tell me I have 6 hours to break up a 2 inch thick layer of ice. As soon as you walk away I'm going to use some hot water and salt so I can take a nap for the remaining 5 and a half hours. Taureans hate wasting energy and if there's a more efficient way to do something they will find it.

The movement is pretty clunky, because Garrett turns his head when you look around, he doesn't turn his body until he can't turn his head anymore. The problem with this is if you are standing still, and turn a bit then try to run he will make a pretty wide curve that can cause you to fall off ledges, bump into things you didn't mean to, etc. I'm getting used to it but still it's annoying.

Also mantling is really bad. Sometimes I'll climb up something fine, other times Garrett will literally spin around and climb up thin air, then fall back down and alert everyone in the room. When it works it's not bad but when it messes up it can seriously fuck you up.

Other then that, and the omission of rope arrows, I quite like it so far (doing the Jacknall's Claw mission now) and I'm getting used to this stuff. However, one thing I will not be able to get used to are the long loading times. I'm looking for .ini tweaks to reduce them now as they are extremely annoying given their frequency.

when it comes to precise moving, 3rd person view would much better than 1st person view.

i used 3rd person view only for precise movement on narrow ledge or pipe, and so on.

sorry for poor english :P

The only reason 3rd person is better in Thief 3 is because they strapped a camera to the head of the 3rd person model and zoomed it in for first person, which made first person extremely clumsy.

I have trouble with both.

By far the most annoying thing about DS is the strange and seemingly broken collision model for Garrett on any surface less than the width of a kitchen table. I spent at least 20 minutes more than I should have in the Pagan's place because I was trying to sneak across those beams, only to suddenly get caught on them then be forcefully launched to the ground and get severely wounded/die, or dropped right in front of AI.

I never felt as though the movement in TDS was clunky. It was "realistic". If I wanted to walk across a suspended pype, I had to actually make sure my feet were at least somewhat on it. I couldn't just turn around in place without shifting a bit like you can in almost all first-person games, where you're just controlling a floating camera.

Body awareness was a cool idea, and being able to switch to third-person was cool too. The biggerst problem with TDS are the bugs and limitations (no actual water).

Body awareness is cool on the first moments we play the game, after a while we completely forget about that. We forget it's there in TDS and we forget it isn't there in TDP and TMA :P there's probably some crazy psychological explanation on the same lines of the reason we can't feel our socks right now (really, try to touch where it ends on your leg without looking)... eh, maybe not

Unless the player's body play an important role in the game like, maybe, mirror's edge?

Finally got my PC back from the shop after my SSD got corrupted a week ago and damaged my motherboard. Scary stuff, but thank goodness it happened right after two months of FM development instead of wiping all my work before I could release it. New SSD, repaired Motherboard and BIOS, and we're ready to start working on my second FM with some added version control in the cloud just to be safe!

I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.

I've finally managed to log in to The Dark Mod Wiki. I'm back in the saddle and before the holidays start in full, I'll be adding a few new FM articles and doing other updates. Written in Stone is already done.
