You can override the md5mesh file to avoid making your own head entity (thought it's not hard to make your own by copying and pasting an existing one and modifying the path to your md5mesh). But there is no point in overriding the image files.

I created my own head.def and applied the necessary things - now I got this cute apparition here. I guess my heightmap is messed up somehow. WILL I EVER GET THIS DONE !??!?!?!?!?! :angry: :angry: :angry:

EDIT2: definitely looks better without bump and height map - is there something I can do about this "edginess" ?

Did you apply one smoothing group to the entire head? That sharp ridge down the nose seems to imply that the verts weren't welded or have 2 different smooth groups.

 

Also wouldn't hurt to tone down your lighting, seems you have no world ambient light and a really really bright white light which makes it hard to see anyway. Plus you need to test in 'real world conditions': ie- have a world ambient light so half her face isn't pitch black.

Dark is the sway that mows like a harvest

I think the sharp edge is because of the uvw maps end - zbrush cut it in the face instead at the back of the head.

It looks like the normal map is inverted. There is a wiki article on how to fix that.

 

Models never look as good in game as they do in their native renderer, sadly. It's important to test them out in game ASAP.

Now, because of the weird edges I remodeled the whole head again. Right. - T h e _ w h o l e _ f * c k i n g _ t h i n g .

I rebuild it to get a clear mesh and repainted it. I reattached the skelleton, the teeth, the mouse, etc. I copied the stuff into the folders, fired up Dark Radiant, checked if I can see it correctly in the model viewer, started the game and ...

... there's no head. There's just the guard standing without a head. Right now I have no patience for going on, I don't know where the error lies - I'm done for today. No really, I spent the whole day on this head and in the end it doesn't work ..

 

Here's the thing in Dark Radiant and Ingame (no console errors seen).

Welcome to my world.

 

I've not seen that particular issue before. The head skeleton must be there or TDM would crash. Can you post the md5mesh here?

I thought it could maybe been moved or something so I made "r_showtris 3" but it isn't there. Not invisible, and not in the torse. I made all bones 0 weight instead of the head bone, it has 1 weight - just like the head before. I'll send the necessery files here:

It has the textures, the mesh and the material shader in it. Just create a map and add the head to a friendly ai to test it. You should see it in the head section of Dark Radiant just liek any other head (head_femaleguard).

Hmm, the file looks correct to me. At the very least, the teeth should be showing up, as they're pointing to the correct shader.

It must be something with the md5mesh, because when I copy over the old md5mesh file over my new one the head shows up ingame. But why is the new one visible in the Dark Radiant and not ingame??

Yes I didn't change anything excecpt for overwriting my old md5mesh and the textures.

Nothing wrong with the def file. That's strange...I don't know what would cause a mesh to be completely invisible, yet still functional enough not to crash TDM.

 

It's not something stupid like the head being waaaay off the origin or something?

There has to be a bone problem: I reattached the mesh to the bones and made no changes (then it calculates the weight by the size of the bones), and then this came out:

The head spreads around just like my first try to if you remember. But if I only let it use the Head Bone (all other bones weith 0) it will disappear. I also tried to properly weightpaint it: disappeared. I tried to weight only the origin bone with 1 and the others with 0: disappeared..

I finally got it now! The error was that you musn't change the position of the bone structure after importing them, only change the position of the model. God damnit who should know?! Now I'll try to make a bump and a heightmap for the head and then rig it. Still a lot of work, but finally that stupid freakin' error is gone god d*mnit!!! :angry:

I guess there's no easy way to change the seam at this point? Having a seam right down the middle of the face is going to be very difficult to hide, even with a good normalmap. Ususally the back of the head is preferable.

I changed it, there is no seam, this was because of the topology. I mirrored the model and so there was this "seam" but now I made it flat so you won't see it, see?

If someone can make a good bump map or heightmap I would be glad - or is this okay?

My second try here:

I made the head bone weight 0.9 and only weighted the other bones with 0.1 at the fitting points (e.g. 4 vertices for upper eyelid left, etc.) but still it looks .. funny. Is there any reference as the imported md5meshes don't seem to have the right painting informations for me.

Looks pretty good.

 

You should 'turn' the edge on her earlobe, that pinches in a weird way.

 

And have you tried inverting the green channel of the normal map? That's how you fix them when they are wrong (if that's the issue, makes light seem to come from wrong side, Spring mentioned it above)

Looks like some verts aren't weighted to me. They are staying in place while the head bone has moved backwards with the character.

 

You'll have to weight the mouth bones to to their bones, other wise they will barely move when she speaks. (they will only move 10% as far as the bones do). That's why the lips should be 100% lipbone, then next row towards head can be blended 50/50... The more rows you have the more increments you can use.

 

I think most of the characters were done in Maya, but like i said before. The weights will vary head to head depending on number of verts and whatnot, you need to weight that head specifically to how it will deform the best.

I weighted the head bone as 0.9 and the rest of the bones at their fitting parts (e.g. the 6 vertices for the upper lip) with 0.1 What you see is the head bone makign the head fit in the right place but the other bones stretching their assigned parts to the front away from the face makign this silly things.

 

The normal map is fine - I guess you did oversee that the light comes from two directions here (?)

 

This is what I get after making the head bone 1.0 and making only a few vertices 0.1 (upper lids, downer lids, upper lip, downer lip, left and right mouth) Ingame I see no lip moving or eyelid slashing, instead I have a funny face again. On this picture I selected the head bone (orange parts are 0.9 head bone, red is 1.0)
