Newbie cheesy Questions

Hi all,

 

This is going to be long and off point sometimes so the forum admin may put this post where he/she thinks it`s going to be best, not to mention trivial for most if not all here but please bare with me as I have a huge learning curve in frount of me.

 

First let me thank all the mod makers and contributers for thier efforts and the awsome fruits of thier labours (the babies mods of course).

Inspired I am to complete at least a small map of my own and I have some great ideas, But to the point:

 

In dark radiant I get no textures in the library media tab? It points to (textures/darkmod/stone/etc.) but no textures are there, infact that folder is not either.

 

Do I need to extract all the .pk4 zips into a folder called textures under Doom3 and have darkmod installed there? I thought it used the assets from the zips but obviously can`t see them?

 

Any help is appreciated.

in darkradiant the textures are in the media tab and you select which textures you want to use and they then appear in the textures tab, and once you use a texture on the side of a world brush it will permantly stay in the texture tab, it will only be removed if you decide not to use that texture in your map.

 

you dont have to unpack the pk4 files, plus unpacking the texture files is pointless as the editor looks at the material's file to get what textures its going display in the media tab. and the material files are in another pk4 file and you dont need to unpack that either.

 

if its nothing is appearing in the media tab then go into preferences, media browser settings, and tick the box that says load media files at startup.

 

game settings should be

 

Doom 3

path to doom 3 folder eg c:/darkmod/doom3/ or c:/program files/steam/<user>/common/doom 3/

darkmod

I got the textures working ok now but my directory structures are all messed up (doom3 at e:\games\doom3) and darkmod under that and DR under that.

 

So I`m going to take your suggestion and move it all to c:\doom3 as when I open up DR it some times defaults to c:\.

 

Could I put darkmod on c:\ then just the doom3 dir and .pk4 assets needed and if so what files are need from Doom3 is it just the main .pk4 files?

my gaming structure is like this

 

c:/games/doom3

c:/games/doom3/base

c:/games/doom3/d3xp

c:/games/doom3/darkmod

c:/games/darkradiant

 

i installed doom 3 to the games directory, then made a directory in doom3 called darkmod and installed darkmod there, then installed darkradiant to the games directory, but this was for the disc based version of doom 3, for steam version there's supposed to be instructions in the wiki or on the forum for how to install darkmod and darkradiant to work with the steam version.

Hey Stumpy,

 

I left it all the way it was, my c:\ drive is an ssd and I don`t want to ware level its self to bits. But I got it working ok, I had to extract tdm_prefabs01 under darkmod.

 

my dir structure is:

 

e:\games\doom3

e:\games\doom3\darkmod

e:\games\doom3\darkmod\darkradiant

 

While I`m here would any one care to help a noob out I`m stuck.

 

I try and inv_target [target] a key from a prefab chest to an ai character after setting inv_map_start 1 then dmap to be sure. It crashes every time I run map. what is it I am missing any clues:)

Could it be the ai is armed Dunno? Can`t seem to find any thing in the entity lists but I`m sure I1m missing it.

This won't work. If you want an ai to be able to open a door, set the spawnarg "can_unlock" "_name_of_the_door_" on it.

Hi all,

 

Remember I`m just starting out when it comes to DR infact I have`nt used a map maker since the seudo 2D Doom thy flesh consumed ( ah the good ol days) came out so it`s a big jump up but I`m getting there. I need to put some web`s around in a cave but have`nt been able to find them yet.

Spider webs are decals. You find them under textures/darkmod/decals/nature IIRC. Put them on patches.

Whats it best to put it on? I mean Is it best to use it on a patch or brush?

I need help getting my map to load in darkmod as a mission(.pk4). I know I`m missing something but what?

 

the screen cap is inside the .pk4 file.

 

I notice most if not all have a def folder and file, guis with assets and maps within but where/how do I generate or get them?

 

Was going to use startpack and import my map and mess around to fix it but Woundering if there`s an easier way?

 

By the way @Fidcal under (Playing Project FMs in Dark Mod) in your Startpack Mappers` Guide there is this :

 

( If you use tdmlauncher.exe to launch Dark Mod then you can install your map project as the current FM and it will remain current each time you launch tdmlauncher - at least until you install another FM or delete darkmod\currentfm.txt +set fs_game_base darkmod +set fs_game mymap ).

 

Does this still work with darkmod.exe as tdmlauncher.exe is nolonger?

Compare this id developer tutorial/cheatsheet with an existing map's /guis/map/mapname.gui file. Just create the 'gui' folder and make a text file inside it named 'mapname.gui'. Then edit the .gui file to your liking. The .gui file will define the splash screen graphic, as well as display any other text you want. Also double-check the bottom section of this tutorial to make sure you didn't miss anything.

Is there a way I can dump the console output? I`ve tried conDump and logfile 2 but niether seem to be outputting anything.

Having a bit of trouble my map keeps crashing from mission menu but all works fine if I map it.

Help and suggestions are Appreciated.

in the console, type "condump filename"; it will save filename.txt somewhere (I forget where in 1.08).

That`s the thing Springheel Where? It`s not outputting anything I`ve looked everywhere I can think of and done a system wide search and nada.

 

Seems like something of mine may be corrupt I hope not but time to start testing for me.

It saves it in the folder of your "current" selected mission. So if you have Return to the City loaded, it will put in that folder even though that is not the map you are dmapping. (at least it does on my install)

Thanks stumpy there are 9 files there so I`ve ran it 9 times just couldn`t find the files and why search didn`t pick them up is another thing.

I ran the conDump and also the logfile 2 and they spit out some strange stuff.

 

The q console file has a lot of stuff I know nothing about and some I`ve fixed like there was a briefing.xd error i mannaged to remove ( simple formating error).

@Lux thanks

 

I still can`t work out why my map is crashing. The .pk4 file has the correct files and the title and load menues all work but click start mission and half way through loading DM crashes.

 

This leads me to believe it`s a map error or multiple errors within the map.

 

Any ideas or can anyone take a look at the map for me? These files are the dmap output .txt files.
