About spam

The people who design anti-spam systems in general just need to get smarter. For example, on some other forums, we see spam frequently. The thing is, the spammers post the *exact* same text again and again in different places. How hard is it to make a rule in the database where if a user posts the same thing in more than two places, he is classified as a spammer? Also, most of the shit spammers post contain urls. If more than two posts contain the URL which has been previously flagged as spam by a user, posts containing that url should be automatically classified as spam in the future.

If the above isn't acceptable, there's always this method: http://crapcha.com/

I don't think it's that hard, but there's a small edge-case which makes it report potential false positive results. I've had it happen to me that a slow internet connection or other such connection that chugs along actually gives the go-ahead on the forum board to post my message two or three times in a row. I wouldn't necessarily want the board to automatically ban me because of that hiccup.

I think it would be tons more efficient to just restrict people to post status updates unless they have X many forum posts or such limit. Another forum I frequent has a similar thing but it's about forum signatures. That would solve the status spam, which I think is the worst or at least the most obnoxious. *shrug*

Unfortunately, Stop Forum Spam is already implemented using IPS' anti-spam service.

Read: http://community.inv...ervice-updates/. As for stats, 99% of all new accounts registered are immediately banned due to match via IPS' anti-spam service as "Known spammer". So it could be a lot worse.

Adding Captchas and what not is of no use either as it's often (poor, under-paid) humans that register the accounts manually.

  • Good stuff!
  • If we need this in the future I am happy to volunteer for this..

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
