Custom movable items

I'd like a plank of wood to be movable. I've looked through the entities but can't find one. Am i missing it somewhere ?

If i create custom movable items, could someone clarify what the wiki says. I create the brush, texture it, add the atdm_movable_base entity and add the spawnargs listed in the 'simple brush movables'

http://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php?title=Moveables

When i map i just get what look like small crates ?? No plank. they move and sound OK though.

I've missed something simple i'm sure.

Aside from using a pre-made one like they're suggesting, in what respect does it look like a small crate? Is it literally the crate entity, or is it just a small cube? Is it an issue with misspelling the entity definition, with the texture scale...? Maybe the brush inadvertently changed into a cube in the entity transition? I'd think about converting the brush into a func_static first (right-click menu IIRC) and then change the entity type.

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

Thanks for the help. Planks now added and looking good.

With regard to the boxes (!) they are small dark grey cubes. I didn't do any collision models ? Should I have. I was just following the wiki and I think I did convert them to func_static first. Added the sounds, added weight and density.

If like to know what I did wrong in case I need to create one in future.

It's all a steep learning curve at the moment but I'm psyched to produce an immersive map.

I was thinking missing entity types render as cubes IIRC (I can't remember exactly), which would suggest you somehow made it the wrong entity type, or maybe misspelled it, or the wiki could even have it wrong, or it might have changed since it was written, or who knows... The next thing I'd do is look up an FM that has something like that & open it in DR just to triple check everything (like that early FM that has the moveable brick).

It's moveable_base. Is that the issue?

You used the other spelling every time in the thread so far & I mentioned a misspelled entity was one possible reason, so I'm guessing that.

There is another way to create custom moveables. Use item/custom/custom_grabable_item. Give it the brick as model via the "model" spawnarg. Also create a copy of the brick and texture it collision. Use that as collision model via the spawnarg "clipmodel".

FM's: Builder Roads, Old Habits, Old Habits Rebuild

Mapping and Scripting: Apples and Peaches

Sorry, that was just my spelling ! I picked it out the entity list when linking so it should have been right. I'll try some of the other suggestions.

incidentally, if this was a weird shape for something that no model had been created for, would Obsttorte's method work OK ?

All good info folks. I've been reading Sir Taffs thread of questions and am picking up loads. Seems best to read all these first before doing lots of mapping as it's teaching me how to do things right !

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
