Should I or should I not?

Doom 3 is actually a great shooter if you don't care that much for story in this kind of game. A lot of people are bashing it and calling it a techdemo but I disagree. It's simple but polished, fun and atmospheric so if you like first person shooters then yes.

Important: You need the original Doom 3 to run the mod. The BFG edition will NOT work.

It's up to you really. Standalone is close but not really close and you can get Doom 3 pretty cheap now.

I guess the other option is if you have the patience and can and put up with some possibly broken stuff for a while, you could ask to participate in testing for the standalone 2.0 version. Having someone completely new might be helpful.

So doom 3 (not bfg) is required to play the mod. Doom 3 is currently 2.50 on steam atm is why I'm asking. I was debating between that and return to wolfenstein but since I know doom 3 has TDM on its side and RtoW doesn't is the pull for me. How would I go about being a tester? And also is there a link to explain installation and everything for TDM? Plus I just read that doom 3 isn't supported for Vista 64 (which I run) I'm sure there is a workaround somewhere for that..? :)

Regarding doom3: The shooter is really worth being played. So if you can grab the original version somewhere, you should. The graphics are quite good even from nowadays standards, and the game is very challenging under higher difficulty levels, something you'll find rarely in todays games. Not to mention it is really creepy at some points.

Regarding 64bit: I use windows 7 64bit and never had any problems.

Regarding installation. You basically just need to download it. Use the downloader as described on the wiki and maybe on darkmod.com, too. If you have a limited download size, you can even download it on another computer and copy it into your doom3 directory. Quite easy. There are no special computer skills required to get TDM running.

Oh, and once you've played all the FM's available, don't miss to download DarkRadiant and make your own. It's quite easy and really rewarding. (And don't forget to tell all your friend sof the mod ;) )

FM's: Builder Roads, Old Habits, Old Habits Rebuild

Mapping and Scripting: Apples and Peaches

Sculptris Models and Tutorials: Obsttortes Models

My wiki articles: Obstipedia

Texture Blending in DR: DR ASE Blend Exporter

I bought Doom 3 specifically for The Dark Mod. I got it for $9.99, but I would have gladly paid $59.99 in order to play TDM! Personally I wouldn't wait for 2.0 to come out to start playing this game. To me it is the best game in existence, bar none! The developers, fan mission creators and the TDM community are awesome too!

I bought Doom 3 and Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil (I just checked my Steam library to verify.) and I have had no problems running TDM. The install is super easy too! Also don't worry about asking away; like I said the community is awesome.

I see that, I will like being a part of this community :) Now when it's all done downloading, will there be an icon on desktop to access the mod or how would I get to it?

These instructions are pretty good, but if you have questions feel free to ask again. http://www.thedarkmo...wnload-the-mod/ The instructions in the link tell you to make a folder called: darkmod, and put it in this folder: C:\Games\Doom3, but I found mine in: Computer\C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Doom 3. If you bought Doom 3 from Steam, I imagine that your file path will be similar to mine. Once you've downloaded the file tdm_update_win, drag it from your downloads folder and drop it into the darkmod folder that you created inside of the Doom 3 folder. If I remember correctly all you have to do now is double click tdm_update_win and The Dark Mod will start downloading into your darkmod folder. I prefer to make shortcuts of my darkmod folder and TheDarkMod.exe. then drag and drop them to my desktop.

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
