"Smart" and "Dumb" thinking

Recommended Posts

Hypothetical situation. I've got a small room, with 54 ai in it. Looking out across them, I go down to 24 fps.

What I know I can do is

-adjust neverdormant to 0

-adjust min and max interleave_think_dist

-adjust max_interleave_think_frames

What I'd like to do is

-Have a single entity (like a SetTeamRelations entity) that can adjust those, or the relevant ones, to AI standing in a box without getting hacky or having to rely on scripting.

Why, you say? Well, suppose I wanted to throw a dinner party for Bridgeport's finest. There are going to be a lot of people there, and I've infiltrated the party (as a controllable player, or as part of a cutscene with the player teleporting along behind the camera like in Sotha's ride-along with Mr Knighton), engaging in conversation with people until the objective has been met. Now, having that many AI actively doing their thing in one room is going to be absolutely killer. It already is, and this room is 4 walls, a floor and a roof, the lighting is ambient. We're talking slideshow for me once you figure in lights and geometry.

A way I figure of solving this, until we get some of the multicore and other performance additions done to the engine, would be to seperate these guests into their little cliques, and have each one inside an entity that when triggered, sets the AI within to dumb-thinking, to save on resources. If I the player am standing at group A, then groups B, C, D, E and F should all be on dumb thinking mode. When I move to group B, it triggers group B to smart-thinking, and triggers A, C, D, E, F to dumb thinking.. effectively only having 1 "real" group of AI functioning at a time.

I ask about having this able to do everything in a box as a triggered event, so that if I was to move down to floor 1 of a map, the entirety of the basement, and floor 2 and outside etc are all set to dumb-thinking without relying on distance checking.

Is this feasible as an entity that could be added to DR? Or will this forever be the realm of hacky workarounds and/or scripting?

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
