Hm... so far I'd say these could be worthy

Darksiders 1&2

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines

Legacy of Kain collection

Amnesia the Dark Descent & Machine for pigs

Limbo

Serious Sam 3 Gold

Painkiller pack

Penumbra pack

Alan Wake franchise pack

I want to say Slender: The arrival but know nothing about it... apparently it's good?

Would also recommend price checking anything you do like the look of against sites like GoG, in case they're cheaper there.

Thanks for the tips :) I'm checking some of these. I already played limbo, penumbra and the first amnesia. Machine for pigs is very interesting but the discount isn't sufficiently attractive yet.

I guess I'm just not a huge fan of horror games after all :P

edit: also played Swapped. I recommend it! a bit short but very cool.

I think I might pick up I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream. I keep hearing about how much of a must-play it is and the only reason I haven't done so yet is because I've had difficulties getting it to work on Windows 7. At $2.49 with soundtrack it's a steal.

Can anyone vouch for Lucius? Don't really know what to make of the reviews to be honest - it looks like a bad Hitman knock off but I love Hitman.

EDIT: By the way, if you haven't played Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines you really owe it to yourself to play it. It's not without its problems, but once you get used to the mechanics I think you'll find the story to be excellent. I also think the music is rather cool and the voice acting is brilliant. If you do play it, a word to the wise: don't play a mage and even if you do put plenty of points into firearms regardless. There is a huge difficulty spike later on in the game that will just destroy you if your character is not combat-efficient which I found out the hard way. The game is still playable but just spare yourself the reloads.

As far as Lucius goes, I picked it up off GoG ages ago (and it's rotted in my backlog ever since, it seemed interesting anyway.)

Definitely second what you're saying about V:TM - B. The community patch helps a bit too, fleshes things out a little as far as the clan system goes and some of the powers, though it does feel a bit rushed near the end (due to the impending implosion of Troika), as evidenced by the endgame difficulty spike, which unfortunately does necessitate specialising in some form of combat in addition to any of the cool other stuff you can do to progress through the game. Must play, IMO.

In Lucius, you play as a kid, son of the devil, you have to cause accidents in the house to kill your target, but make it look like its an accident. the stealth elements consist of hiding in walk in cupboards or in other rooms to avoid someone walking around, else you end up back in your bedroom if caught. Never finished it cause the darkness is really dark if played on a cathode ray tube monitor, and one level its pitch black dark for me (the power goes out so you've got to bump someone off in the darkness, and I couldn't see where I was going). The devil turns up every so often to give you gifts to help with your bumping off people in the game.

Deadly Premonition is a strange title, but severely underrated. It's one of my favorite strange horror games.

If you like really weird psychedelic mysteries, then pick it up while it's on sale.

A Machine for Pigs sucks, avoid if you liked The Dark Descent. Condemned is a really really creepy game if that's your thing, same with the Penumbra series, and Vampire Bloodlines is one of the best games ever (though you have to patch it first or you'll be in a world of pain). Painkiller is a cool FPS but avoid the addons like the plague, Soul Reaver is a classic, and F.E.A.R. 1 has the best close quarters combat I've ever seen in an FPS. Natural Selection 2 is a great multiplayer game and They Bleed Pixels is a cool but insanely difficult platformer with combat. Other than that there's nothing really exciting.

Oh yes and I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream is a classic. Everyone should play that.

Do have a look at a Let's Play of Lucius before you buy it. This game is not for everyone. Like, one mission is to kill the gardener by switching on the lawn-mower he is repairing and making him put his head into the rotating blades. I don't know what kind of person you have to be to actually enjoy playing this game, but I am definitely not that kind of person.

My Eigenvalue is bigger than your Eigenvalue.

I'm not bothered by it that much. By this point I have become so desensitized to video game or film gore that in some cases I actually don't notice it. That doesn't necessarily mean I revel in a game being gory per se, it just doesn't affect me (real life gore however has quite a negative effect on me at times). That's not to say it can't be used effectively. Honestly, I doubt I am going to buy the game, at least not now since I am relatively uninterested in it and there are better things I can spend my money on.

EDIT: Did buy I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream though. I'm psyched to play that.

I played this back in the day. I have mixed feelings. Its an enigmatic and adult game, but I simply was too affected by the fact I had read the short story BEFORE playing it... I enjoyed it very much, and the game simply wasn't the same as how I had pictured the world and characters in my head. If you havent read it, I guess it wont make a difference.

That's a problem with any adaptation honestly. The wonderful thing about books is that it is possible to interpret and perceive them in an almost infinite amount of ways, and whichever way you perceive it is bound to be different from the adaptation. I haven't read the short story but I've heard that is even better. I'll probably read it after playing.

I'd definitely recommend Miasmata. Most immersive game I've played since Thief, and pulls off the pretty amazing trick of being able to be utterly terrifying in bright daylight and beautiful surroundings. Downside: needs a powerful computer, and (for me) hits the limitations of its gameplay near the end, but until then - wow....

Serious Sam 3 Gold? Really? You seem the only person who is not so disappointed by this game on the internet. o_O

Having played Serious Sam 1, 2 and 3, I felt 3 was a lot closer to 1 than 2 was, I really didn't like 2. Hell, by the end of SS2 I just put god mode on and finished the last 2 stages, I was sick of it. 3 was, to me, SS1 + modern graphics while making relatively few "sacrifices" to modern FPS conventions. Sure you have to reload some of the guns now, but there's no suck-your-thumb-behind-cover-to-regen-health or hold button to peer over cover shooting, and mostly it's pretty fun (the more recent patches causing it to crash are not my cup of tea, but that isn't the gameplay's fault). Who exactly is this wave of people who hate SS3?

A Machine for Pigs sucks, avoid if you liked The Dark Descent.

I haven't got far in Machine for Pigs, but I've enjoyed it so far. It's not TDD, but it isn't terrible (don't spoil if it turns awful later :( ). It just isn't working off the same mechanics/storyline, and so far I've been able to appreciate it for what it is.

Painkiller is a cool FPS but avoid the addons like the plague,

Were any of the expansions good? I've got the first game, and Redemption (which while not awful, seems to try and be Serious Sam and throw a billion enemies at you, and isn't terribly long. Not awful, but definitely mediocre). Isn't the first expansion after the main game supposed to be not bad, then all the others after that are just crap?

Soul Reaver is a classic,

Soul Reaver 2 is pretty good, Defiance is good (other than camera angle issues, FUUUUUUUU). Blood Omen 2 is not so good, and I'm surprised they didn't throw in Blood Omen 1, since that sets the whole series up, story-wise. Isn't BO1 abandonware now?

I guess you can count me in the "I actually like SS3" club as well.

I mean sure you have to reload some of the guns and there's a sprint key now, but in practice I would have to be in a really really pendantic mood to complain about that.

I suppose maybe I could complain about it being repetitive, but criticizing Serious Sam for being repetitive kind of misses the point.

A Machine for Pigs is not as bad as everyone says. It's just very different from The Dark Descent. It's very linear and not challenging but still scary and atmospheric. The only difficult thing about it, is figuring out the story. You have to pay close attention and piece it together for yourself. Unfortunately, that's the only reason to play it more than once.

Aside from what has already been mentioned, I guess I will give a cautious recommendation for The Void.

It's a very pretty and atmospheric game with some really nice art direction and some pretty interesting mechanics.

However, I give it a "cautious recommendation" though because it does have rather nasty caveat. It's a painfully difficult and unforgiving game, which is completely at odds with what most people expect from "artsy" games.

You're almost guarenteed to fail badly and have to start over on your first couple attempts through the game. I recommend keeping a lot of saves because gameplay is such that it often punishes you very slowly and painfully for a long time for your mistakes, and when you do finally "game over" there's a good chance you've been slowly sinking towards that loss for so long that your recent saves will turn out to be not viable.

Still, if you can endure its difficulty it's a very interesting game indeed.

3rd vote for Miasmata for sure. This is a ground breaking game IMO. It does end a bit anti-climatically but then again, we never want excellent games to end.

A Machine for Pigs wasn't horrible but it wasn't great and definitely wasn't Amnesia which is a shame but I played through it just to continue with the series.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines - great game and great story. The graphics are pretty dated IMO but the game play is very good.

Painkiller pack - The original game was a lot of fun and crazy. Don't know about the expansions

Penumbra pack - Excellent story telling, interactive physics and a great series of games.

Alan Wake franchise pack - Interesting mechanics and gameplay. The story kept me involved to the end. I didn't initially like playing it but the story held me and I eventually really enjoyed the game play so go figure.

Finally got my PC back from the shop after my SSD got corrupted a week ago and damaged my motherboard. Scary stuff, but thank goodness it happened right after two months of FM development instead of wiping all my work before I could release it. New SSD, repaired Motherboard and BIOS, and we're ready to start working on my second FM with some added version control in the cloud just to be safe!

I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.

I've finally managed to log in to The Dark Mod Wiki. I'm back in the saddle and before the holidays start in full, I'll be adding a few new FM articles and doing other updates. Written in Stone is already done.
