Maya -> Doom 3

Can someone just give me a quick run down of how to get an animated model from Maya to Doom 3. Like what you need in the maya scene, what you need in the Def file, what you need to display the model in doom 3, etc. ATM whenever i try exportModel with a def file of just 1 model and 1 anim command, it crashes (and fucks up my desktop, what's more. You know, just like when you have doom 3 windowed and the desktop is super bright). It's a maya 6 model and i'm using the maya 6 importer dll.

Fr extracting the mb to md5 you only need the first section of the def files (like shown in the thread I made which Ishtivan linked)

TO be able to get the mesh into a doom map and cycle it's anims you need to add more to the def file, something like this

export hammer {

options  -sourcedir models/mymodels -destdir models/md5/monsters/hammer

     mesh hammer.mb
     anim hammer.mb -dest WalkF

}

model monster_hammer {
mesh                       models/md5/monsters/hammer/hammer.md5mesh

anim idle                  models/md5/monsters/hammer/WalkF.md5anim }

entityDef monster_hammer {

"inherit" "monster_default"
"scriptobject" "monster_zombie"

"model" "monster_hammer"
"size" "32 32 68"
"use_aas" "aas48"
"team" "1"
"rank" "0"
"health" "25"

"damage_zone head" "*upper_back"
"damage_zone chest" "*mid_back -*upper_back"
"damage_zone left_arm" "*l_shoulderblade"
"damage_zone right_arm" "*r_shoulderblade"
"damage_zone legs" "*hip origin pelvis"
"damage_scale head" "2"
"anim" "idle"
"mass" "50"
}

As for setting up a proper def file, leave that to coryv. He'll write out the def file he needs to work woth the base_guard AI hes' working on. Just send him the md5's.

Ok, i think my copy of Doom was buggered. R_gamma wasn't doing anything and in radiant, there were a ton of error messages. My copy at work seems to run everything fine. So i'll reinstall it when i get home. I'm gonna do an exportModel test with my work copy in a bit...

Yes, 6.0, but I doubt that would make any difference. I can sent you a few .mb files of the guard and my def file to see if you can use those to extract md5s from.

Have you got access to out FTP?

Well at least we know its your doom setup then. Is it the patched version? Have you set up the maya environment variables properly? THat can be quite tricky. THe default variable maya sets up on install doesn't work for me, I have to make new ones before doom (and deep exploration ) will recognise it.

I explain that in the maya-doom document thread that's linked above.

I did the env variable at home, but forgot here. Tried it and it still crashed.

Also, at home when it crashes doom 3 just crashes and no messages come up. At work, i get a maya fatal error and it attempts to save the scene in a temp location in an .ma (i sometimes get this same error whe using maya when it crashes).

BTW, i never had a problem with Deep Exploration and getting it to work with maya files. Had a problem with it trying to get it to work with max files though.

Oh yeah, it's version 1.0.1282

umm..well I do't know then. Some silly qustions - where did you place the mayaimort.dll - in the doom/base folder? What exactly did you type into doomedit for those files I sent - exportmodels ulrich ?

Alos did you set up the destination directory for the md5 files - base/models/md5/guard, I don't know if that's a problem, but it's best to try everything.

Where did you get that mayaexport.dll, was it from the latest verison of the SDK?

the dll's in the base directory.

In the doom 3 console (in the game menu). i typed exportModels urich (well, expor+tab+space+u+tab+enter). Just then i tried the same thing in Radiant. Same crash

the def should've had the destination directory all set up, right? This was in the def: options -sourcedir models/mymodels -destdir models/md5/ulrich. I creaetd a mymodels dir under models, and a ulrich dir under mdoels\md5.

Texture doesn't matter, right?

NO the texture doesn't matter for this part.

here's the dll I use. You may as well try it, in case yours is corrupt or something.

Clutching at straws now)

I think you may need to try for answewrs at the doom3world forums, since I can't think of anything else that might be the culprit.

There's another guy on the doom3world forums with exactly the same problem as you. I notcied his doom path was C:/Doom_III/

If your path is anything other than drive letter:/Doom3/ then that could well be the problem.

      i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
      tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

      Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

      Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

      I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
      Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

      Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
