SeriousToni
For the english members: I recently gave a beginner's course in level design and made a list of the important shortcut keys. As I made this list anyway, I want it to share here.
This is a bit off-topic, but I'd like to know. How did the course go? How many lectures / working hours did it consist of, or was it more of a single workshop? Did the students have a specific goal? How old were the students? How did they take to using DR and the gameplay of The Dark Mod in general? I'm sorry about all the questions, but I've been thinking of holding some sort of course for young people aspiring to work in the game business, so I'm naturally interested Quote FMs: In a Time of Need, Breaking out the Fence, Exhumed
SeriousToni
Dear kyyrma, the course was a bit small, which is because of TDM isn't well known (instead of Unreal or Half-Life) so my advice is make the course not only TDM related but start with some general advices on level design techniques, approaches, technical terms, and so on (stuff people can use on other engines and editors too). Then you can go into the practical thing with Dark Radiant to let them feel the workflow and what is important. The goal was to create a little map with the single rooms the people built, but as you can imagine as they were all beginners there was not much to put together (nice work though, I was impressed by the first time mappers, so I put some screenies for you down below). The course took about 20 hours and my preparation and prearangements about 40 hours. So 60 hours in complete. The students were all around 18 to 30 y.o. I think. Gameplay was not a matter for the beginning (in the practical part in DR - it was a matter in the theoretical part though). The students and me we had very much fun and I recomment trying this out yourself! It made TDM a bit more popular though The screenies: 4 Quote "Einen giftigen Trank aus Kräutern und Wurzeln für die närrischen Städter wollen wir brauen." - Text aus einem verlassenen Heidenlager
Obsttorte
Not bad for a first try. The person who did shot number two seems to have a good eye for details, and the one that did number four for athmosphere. I hope those guys got infected by the mapping sickness, so we may see some new mappers around here soon. But even if not, advertisement is always good. (Regarding a course in gameplay, some of the major devs may could need such one ) EDIT: Just took a look at the pdf. Men, there are quite a few that I didn't knew of. I'll translate this into english and upload it here, as this is bloody useful. demagogue
Oh I'd love to do something like this, just for the sheer pleasure of teaching & people interested in mapping learning. I should look up my school's policy on unofficial courses, or maybe one could just put up flyers. Quote What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine. Sotha
Stuff like this is a great. Well done. And the students really seemed to do good mapping job, it seems. Even more cool if some of the students got hooked in TDM as a side effect. Quote Clipper-The mapper's best friend.
kyyrma
Thank you for such a detail run-down on it. I've had an idea of running something similar at a student community here, not necessarily with Dark Radiant but the idea is the same: pick some people with little experience but lots of interest, and teach them some basic game development related skills (Blender, Unity, GMK, Mapping etc). Could be a lot of fun! I'm actually surprised how good the composition of many of those scenes are. SeriousToni
Hehe thanks guys - well yeah you just have to go on this with an open heart and mind. If you have fun, people will too (as you can see in the screens). Edit: Thanks for translating the pdf Obsttorte - you may want to put the german and the english version into the mod wiki then, so they're easier to find.
