Wired interviews John Carmack for Doom's 20th anniversary

That's rather cool, even if John is very tight-lipped about his current endeavours. :)

Come the time of peril, did the ground gape, and did the dead rest unquiet 'gainst us. Our bands of iron and hammers of stone prevailed not, and some did doubt the Builder's plan. But the seals held strong, and the few did triumph, and the doubters were lain into the foundations of the new sanctum. -- Collected letters of the Smith-in-Exile, Civitas Approved

Great article, thank you for thinking of us! A few comments.

[...[When we released our source code to the builder[...]

Lets set aside the obvious conotation to the elicit, "Builder". Haha... this made me think of TDM in so many ways. From the time I was young and built a treehouse with my friends and painted "Tree House Builders" on the side of it like we were going to get any business!?!

Wolfenstein was a 286 game that used extended memory, the old EMS/XMS different ways that we were extending past there. And one of the important decisions for Doom was, could we make it a 386-only game? And it was probably the first significant game title to use a 386 DOS extender and be written in 32-bit protected mode. That was something where I could have written the same thing still within the context of 286, and maybe a 286 person could have played it in a small window chugging along at 10 frames per second.

This reminds me of our first desktop computer. My uncle was a CS major at IU and was really keen to it and got his nephew(s) (just me at the time) A z80 processor with ... wait for it ... a math co-processor! Yeah baby!! Wow... we could run stuff SO fast!?! Haha compared to these days. Its so ...unreal, literally. I did all my school papers, previously, in Wordstar on an Osbourne 1 and later got an "upgrade" to an Osbourne Vixen. Man, those where the days. Monocromatic screen, whether green or orange, and dual... that's right, DUAL 5 1/4" floppys. Those where the days. Mbasic on a suitcase.

The 360 and PS3 are far from tapped out in terms of what a developer could do with them, but the whole world’s gonna move over towards next-gen and high-end PCs and all these other things. Part of me still frets a little bit about that, where just as you fully understand a previous generation, you have to put it away to kind of surf forward on the tidal wave of technology that’s always moving. That’s something that we’ve struggled with in every generation. And now I at least know enough to recognize that some of my internal feelings or fondness for technology that I understand or have done various things with usually has to be put aside. Because data has shown over the decades that that’s usually not as important as you think it is.

Clearly, that's the dollar signs talking there.

Great article, thanks again! :)

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
