(avoiding thread necromancy here)

We should get The Dark Mod on Steam Greenlight now that v2.0 is out. This was discussed a while ago, and the consensus seemed to be that we should wait until standalone was released.

At this point, we need maximum exposure to get as many new people into FM creation as possible- think of the potential network effect. The sooner we get people involved, the more time they can spend honing their editor skills and contributing to the community.

TDM is a quality game and would get a huge amount of attention- think "top ten F2P indie games on Steam" big.

More potential content creation = very good IMO.

Exposure to folks otherwise missing it = good too.

Minimizing the game dwindling = good as well.

Ah, so the necro poll results from a year ago were positive. Now it's the standalone future. Do these responses indicate such is already in process?

So the most recent news AFAIK is that Baddcog indicated a willingness to be the frontman on this, at least to start a process & we can discuss issues with Steam from there, and IIRC most people seemed ok with that, but (and I think it's ok to publicly say this) the main thing holding him back at the present is the $100 fee. I personally think it's ok to have our fans contribute to this fee, and if people are interested in that they might announce it here. But others might disagree and they could say that here too. I know we have a general trend not to get money involved in things, but this is kind of a special, one-off case for a very specific thing.

And I mean, if it's just the fee that's holding things back now, then I think we should at least get that collected so it's not an issue, and we can at least get a process started, or talk about it without the fee being at issue anymore. Then in the meantime we can still be discussing what issues people have. E.g., at present, we don't know to what extent we might have to change our package, or what it means for our current distribution (tdm_update.exe and in-game downloader), if we can keep that as is. Issues like that are things we might want to discuss with Steam, but I think we have to start a process to even get to that discussion.

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

Sweet!

$10 from ten people? I've received way more entertainment value than that. I understand the reticence to involve money generally, but funds going elsewhere doesn't appear to have the same ramifications. However I would prioritize the pending possible new server hosting if finances are needed there first, currently in "stay tuned" status.

Is there at least a steam-group to begin with? And no other costs beside 100$ fee?

How we speak depends on how we keep silent.

Many games sold/released on Steam maintain their own external patching mechanisms (War Thunder and Planetside 2 are two f2p examples of that), so I don't imagine that would be too big of a deal. At the very least, the knowledge that it can and is being done from outside of the Steam umbrella would be valuable knowledge to have if any negotiations with Steam were entered into.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'd be willing to contribute toward that.

Same here. Having TDM on Steam would benefit much to spread the word. Also the ease of installation and auto update process are great things to have.

I'd give 10 bucks, or 20 reais here, for it.

Frequently, in mid game I think to myself, boy, and this is free. Maybe the boys deserve more than a mental or written thanks.

Also, may attract more creativity from map-building-savvy players. Unless, you don't appreciate that.

I fails to see how it is connected to Steam, a "donate" button should be fine.

There's a difference in motivation. And a significant difference in ramifications. Apples and oranges.

The former broadens the audience, provides more exposure, the cost is incidental to the gift.

The latter changes what is currently a labor of love, a hobby, a joy to work on, into a job, a task to be completed because of compensation, it brings monetary politics into it, and turns it into a burden.

You see this time and again, projects excel until donations are accepted, then the entire tone changes and shortly thereafter it ends.

Some express their appreciation by providing their own labor in whatever fashion they may, for many, talents lie in other places and monetary tokens put in other places may be beneficial. Think of memorial services where donations in the name of the deceased are requested in lieu of direct gifts.

Conflating the two unrelated things just confuses matters.

I just uploaded a new version of the Visible Player Hands mod. It's been updated for TDM 2.13 and has new animations. Check out the post if you're interested!

I moved from Manjaro Linux (rolling release) to Linux Mint (LTS). One of the reasons was that I found the updates a bit too often and long. But now on Mint I get updates every day, although they're usually small updates.

I'd like to track my level design progress a bit more often now, so I'm using the feed in my profile here.
I've been working intensively on Springheel's YouTube course over the past few days. I'm currently up to lesson 8. There is so much information that needs to be processed and practiced.
I have started to create my own house. As I don't have the imagination to create a good floor plan, I grabbed a floor plan generator from Watabou and experimented with it. I chose a floor plan that I will modify slightly, but at least I now have an initial idea.
I used two guards as a measuring tape: The rooms are two guards high. It turned out that I can simply double the number of boxes in DarkRadiant in grid size 8 that are drawn in the floor plan.
I practiced the simplest things on the floor plan first. Drawing walls, cutting walls, inserting doors, cutting out frames, creating VisPortals, furnishing rooms.
I have had my first success in creating a book. Creating a book was easier than I thought. I have a few ideas with books. The level I'm creating will be more or less a chill level, just for me, where I'll try out a few things. I don't have an idea for my own mission yet. I want to start small first.
For the cellar, I wanted to have a second entrance, which should be on the outside. I'm fascinated by these basement doors from the USA, I think they're called Bilco basement doors. They are very unusual in Germany, but this type of access is sometimes used for deliveries to restaurants etc., where barrels can be rolled or lifted into the cellar.
I used two Hatch Doors, but they got completely disoriented after turning. I have since got them reasonably tamed. It's not perfect, but it's acceptable.
In the cellar today I experimented with a trap door that leads to a shaft system. The rooms aren't practically finished yet, but I want to continue working on the floor plan for now. I'll be starting on the upper floor very soon.

On a lighter note, thanks to my cat-like reflexes, my superior puzzle skills and my perfect memory, I was able to beat the remastered version of "Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation" in a new superhuman record time of 23 h : 35 m, worship me!
