As someone who has nothing but modern architecture around, that has no bearing on fun gameplay. ;-) (Heck, my house is one of the older around, built in the 1920s.)

And the best FMs are built of boxes. And some of the FMs with totally uninteresting architecture are most raved about. And many FMs of the supposed "supergods" mentioned above have visual flaws galore (mismatched textures, z-fighting, sky showing through, floating objects, objects that drop through floors, sounds coming from incorrect areas, lousy performance, etc.).

The trick to any design isn't to execute a grand vision. It's to draw out the box. Then add other boxes. Then add some more details. Then plunk in some models. Now patch in some grime. Whoa, suddenly it appears lived in! Now add AIs. What would they do in the kitchen? Stir the pot? Look at the shelves? What would they do at a table with chairs? Play cards? What would they do on guard by a door? Patrol around looking in the dark corners? What would they do in an office? Sit at the desk?

If I used where I live for inspiration, you'd get woods and water. Nothing like anything I've built.

Why do we have windy streets in FMs? Because straight ones perform poorly. So lay out a zig-zag path. Voilà, suddenly you have designed what is in those pictures you find so juicy. ;-)

@Airship Ballet - I think I might be jealous...

@RJ - Yup, but I'm not a really creative person, more of a tinkerer/dabbler with technical leanings. If you ask me to build you a Sistine Chapel, and give me the tools.... you'll get something that was built with stone and has a sign out the front saying "Totes the Sistine Chapel you guys". Give me a floorplan/blueprint... it might just resemble a chapel.

@Helpo I've never lived in a city before, never really wanted to either. Granted your house is your own personal bubble and some can just ignore what's outside but I really dislike uniform architecture, just a pet peeve.

@Xarg I expect to be able to draw you a floorplan worthy of M.C. Escher and see how you do... =P

It can get pretty awful in the heart of the city, especially on transport. I don't much like it in cities either, but I doubt I'll be staying in around London for very long though so it's not all bad.

Where's that challenge accepted .gif when you need it.. also, that would probably be a really fun level to try and make.

Do you move with your family, for your work or what? I backpack a lot but I only ever really moved to begin with when I got uprooted from Finland.

It would be easy to rationalize as a fever dream, too.

Most of my moves were with family but the most recent ones were for education and work. Also, Bristol was quite nice while I was there, I'd recommend visiting if you haven't already.

Or perhaps a more extreme version of the Illusionist's Tower, perhaps his demented cousin's multi-dimensional shack.

Aye, it's always looked like a nice place. When I visit a city it's usually with friends to visit galleries/museums and shop, prioritised in that order. Prettiness factors into whether or not we eat outdoors =P

It's bigger on the inside :o

Ditto. Give me a blank sheet of paper and instead of writing or doodling, I'll probably fold it into a paper airplane and toss it at ya'. ;-)

But I can edit things. (Had a career as a video editor once upon a time, speaking of entertainment industry.) Making missions is so technical, you don't need as much creative spark like for drawing or writing. It's more like snapping Legos together into a dollhouse, then routing the people in it all sorts of random places. (With a whole bunch of technical details to pay attention to along the way.)

*wants to play in an MC Escher level now, there was an MC Escher house built in Second Life that was fun to romp around in.

Oh Second Life... you meant well...

@Biker Nothing right now and for the foreseeable future. I'm chronically ill, so much so that I had to re-take perception tests and the like and failed too many. I was technically allowed to keep going but didn't want to risk it. I was just starting to bike on the roads here when I had to re-take them, which is a shame. I've got a Honda CBR sitting in my garage waiting to be sold on should I end up in dire straits.

The main reason you'd go there is for the lake, restaurants, the shopping center and the market festival. I doubt it's much different where you are so it might not be worth it.

I actually live on planet Earth. I migrated from Mars Colony 23ZX and came here a few years ago. I definitely miss Mars as well heck home is home right?! But Earth is pretty alright for the time being. Thinking about doing a deep space travel sometime in the new year but I don't even have enough credits for the admission fee of the Galton ship.

4000 credits just to lay in bed for 5 months? Ha I will be fixing service droids for years to come before I get a chance to leave *sigh*

@ Airship Ballet:

I agree, Whitby is a very beautiful town. I've been going there every October for 10 years now for the Gothic Weekend. It's full of people wearing vitcorian and steampunk clothes. With that and it's beautiful architecture it really does feel like I'm in a living breathing TDM FM which is bloody awesome!

Actually my first idea for an FM was to base it on the Whitby town centre. Before I started I went through Fidcal's A-Z tutorial and learned about visportals. I realised that making a city FM that had the sea running right through the middle would make it impossible to visportalise.

I my early days of mapping I did try to re-create the Whitby Abbey in an attempt to learn how patches worked and how to create fancy archways.

It's currently on my hard drive collecting virtual dust. I have no plans to turn it into an FM.

As soon as I made that post about where I live I did suddenly think "I hope my psycho ex-girlfriend doesn't play TDM". Still, nobody here knows my real name or what i look like. Except Bikerdude.

I rented a place in Whitby for a couple of years and can safely say it's a thoroughly enchanting place. As a whole it looks great at night and has a ton of Celtic and Gothic heritage:

These three view especially look almost exactly like my birth town Meissen (Germany). It's fascinating how alike those old medieval cities were, even after all those modern-day renovations and such.

I went through Meissen when I was backpacking from Berlin to Dresden and back. It was a wonderful place, but a lot more grandiose in places. It's far more interesting than Whitby, but less quaint I found. German architecture usually is really impressive though =P

Oh wow, that's awesome! =P It would've been great to take that and then try to rebuild it into its former glory.

Now I know where you live Merry, I'm coming to get you...

Google spiders this forum.

While that used to be an issue, it doesn't really matter anymore. That's not because personal details don't still give things away, but rather because there are a ton of things people can do without them. With just your IP and email addresses, people can find out where you live, where your family lives, how much rent you pay, who your landlord is, where you went to school, where you work etc etc. Besides, you'll end up putting all that on the internet just networking for a job. It's pretty much inevitable nowadays but it's only ever used for targeted advertising. It's unfortunate, but trivial information unless it's police trying to arrest you, or unless you have a Thief somewhere with a personal vendetta.

On another note

if not your welcome to go pillion.

I'm probably short enough to go piggy-back, but don't quite feel worthy of such an awesome bike...

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
