What's your favorite video game soundtrack?

This may or may not have been brought up before but I just realised how much faster Dark Radiant sessions seem to go when I'm listening to the FTL soundtrack. I also realised that I listen to video game soundtracks way more than conventional music, which seems to be the case for a lot of my friends. So, what's your favorite? You may have a favorite track that doesn't belong to your favorite OST, in which case post both!

My favorite track... I just generally love it, and it's surprisingly recent. I wasn't expecting anything to trump ICO but this soundtrack is a very close second if not joint first, and they're completely different!

I get a ton of headaches, so I've always listened to a lot of ambient music. I have it in my ears all day every day and it's really calming. I've come to rely on it really, but one of the first great examples I ever found was in the ICO soundtrack. It's dull, and completely featureless compared to most, but it has a special place in my heart as one of the most relaxing yet haunting games I've ever played.

All time favorite soundtrack would have to be for Deus Ex Human Revolution. Such an amazing soundtrack

Michael McCann seems to be getting a lot of work lately, what with being on-call for Splinter Cell and having worked on the new XCOM. Every soundtrack he touches turns to gold, so the more the merrier. I loved the DE:HR OST, only wished it was more prevalent while wandering around undetected.

Very hard to decide. Lots of games have amazing soundtracks. Unreal, Disciples: Sacred Lands, Thief, Quake, STALKER, Dungeon Keeper, Diablo, StarCraft, Fallout, Crusader... the list could go on.

If there's one track that is still very, very memorable, it's this one:

The whole of this soundtrack is perfect, anyway. Some of the unused, beta tunes are even better than those that ended up in the final product.

Isn't Rogue Warrior a contestant for lowest metascore on Steam? Or am I thinking of something else? That music certainly doesn't seem worthy of a bad name.

That creepy, glitchy intro really reminded me of Kashiwa Daisuke. He uses the same kind of sounds as an intro to his music before breaking out into more conventional stuff. They're all really long and strange, but there are diamonds in the artistic, experimental rough:

I still play Unreal Tournament '99 a lot, and with the sfx all the way down and the music all the way up, never gets old, same with Unreal.

I really enjoy stuff from DOOM, Drakan, Resident Evil 1/2/3 as well as Timesplitters. My favorite is probably Hexen though, the mystical soundtrack is just brilliant.

*agree*

Around 1:48 in that video reminded me of something from Lost Odyssey, which has another great soundtrack. I wouldn't expect anything less from Nobuo Uematsu though. He's one of the few people in the industry I have genuine respect for as he left Square when he saw the direction their games were going in. If you're a Final Fantasy fan and haven't played Lost Odyssey, you're missing out:

Oh, yes! I also really love Heretic's. e1m1's theme is always stuck in my head.

Heretic also has some really good music, I've done some renditions of them too. E1M1 is just as much of a classic as DOOM's E1M1, in my opinion.

It does sound surprisingly similar actually, now that I've listened to it closely. Good observation.

Awesome choices but you have to narrow it down, you cheat =P

The Diablo 2 wilderness music is still up there for me, maybe because of the hours spent listening to it...

You earned yourself a subscriber. I see you have some Doom /vr/ videos, I usually follow these threads with great interest.

Yes indeed, I try to do /vr/ stuff every week or so, you may see me posting around in the DOOM thread randomly.

Narrow it down? Hell no!

Well, I guess I'd pick Morrowind for the contrasting epic and peaceful feel of the tracks. In Diablo 2 I like the Act 3 music the best, particularly 2:20-7:30.

Turns out you can't stuff too many YouTube links in one post, so you'll have to make do with ctrl + c, ctrl + v.

Now it's time to listen to all these other videos.

Not my fav, but back when games were measured in kilobytes, and PCs could barely beep, Psygnosis used music for mood.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PUdXYiiHZQY

But then there was this...which blew everything out of the water at the time. I'd never seen a smoother scrolling, faster (too fast to perceive/play on the fastest speed setting) game with full screen sprites.

Hard to believe in this day and age, but coded in assembly language. I was brainwashed on that music summer nights.

I'm a soundtrack junkie, too.

I have no permanent favourites, and my interests change. Recently I've been listening to Alan Wake OST, which I love for its gloomy atmosphere with occasional burst of hostile energy.

Anything by Michael Giacchino works for me too. Batman Arkham City has a cool sountrack, as well as DXHR.

I often listen to Cinemix online radio while working. They play soundtrack music only.

The MechWarrior 2 soundtrack already got posted, so let's dig around for a few other classics...

Apparently there's a limit to the media links,

Whut, no mention of the excellent Bastion? :)

Also, the devil may cry soundtrack is worth mentioning, as it is produced by Noisia, my favorite producerteam of all, usually resonsible for the most devastating Drum & Bass tracks you'll ever hear! :D

I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.

I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).
