Fan Mission Beta Test: Elite City

On another note, i was offered recently to make a videogame - long story short, since this engine is open source i would like to use it, and maybe i could use mappers who can work from concept art all from the comfort of home. and then leave scripting and animations to a professional studio like Eidos. so it would be sort of an indy game on open source engine released by Eidos, it is quite to soon to start off but i am thinking about it, it could make the engine and all it's internals legal.

and it would make the Thief series created by Thief fans.

more about this later on i guess, nothing is sure

this would be separate from the darkmod, since the work done by a studio can not be used for free.

If by "this engine" you're referring to TDM ...

Since Eidos will prolly want to make money from this endeavor, you can't use TDM's engine, since it can't be used for commercial purposes.

Please read LICENSE.TXT, in the main TDM folder.

Is that with the link in the first post or isn't that the latest

The beta test is going on elsewhere, not here. The link in the OP is gone, and a new release thread will appear when beta test is over and Garreth is ready to re-release his work. If it's possible, I'd recommend that this thread be deleted at that time, to reduce confusion.

Edit: Well, the link is there after all. Feel free to use it, I guess, but know that the mission isn't finished yet.

Some clarification would be good here. What do you mean by all of this? When you say "Thief" are you talking about just "thieflike" or a spiritual successor type thing?

Thief without a number? i have no idea. can't ever have a number since the engine is older.

O.o well there will be some other engine that works on darkradiant, i showed it to a professional, and he said it had more functions that the one they where using and made it work with the engine they where working on, i think it was Farcry or Tombraider

so it will be at least edited with darkradiant.

nothing is sure, maybe they give me Thief 5 but i guess they expect something new.

I don't believe spending time on trying to visportal the outside would be of any benefit (now that there are opaque windows), the amount of tris being rendered and drawcalls is totally reasonable.

I imagine simply separating and reducing the lights will take care of things.

Visportals are also used for proper sound propagation, so visportaliazing the outside is definetely needed, even if it does not affect performance.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Dark Radiant is going to work with anything besides TDM and Doom3.

Who's going to give you Thief 5? Sorry, but It seems like a lot of things you are saying just don't make sense.

Apparently garreth is making Thief 5. I'm not really sure what to say to that. I'm completely lost for words.

The Preferences->Game dialogue in DR says it can make maps for:

Doom 3

Doom 3 Demo

Quake 4

XreaL

TDM's included in the "Doom 3" mode.

So I guess any engine that uses the idTech4 map format can use DR for its missions. I don't know if DR produces anything other than idTech4 format.

Far Cry and Tombraider use completely different map building formats. I don't even know where this person would begin to make Darkradiant work with such completely different engines. It would require months of work. Maybe they exported a .obj model or something...but you can't just 'make it work.

Except you're talking about your next big Thief game in that same topic. As it's a beta testing topic, the FM is not yet finished, but you're talking about the sequel before it's finished. If you want to be technical about it, I mean. Judging by reports of the initial release's quality, you should definitely refine your scope to just this for now, regardless of my skepticism about you being in contact with Eidos.

Shenanigans is the word that comes to mind, to put it politely.

What comes to my mind reading this is 'Shadowhide'.

Do you have a new nick name now starting to amuse us again? ^_^

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
