Moving to the US

Diego

Recommended Posts

I've been on this forum for years and even though I haven't played TDM in a long while I still visit almost daily. Now that I'm moving to the other hemisphere later this year I would like to know if it will be close by any of you. We can have coffee and talk about videogames :)

I'm going to Iowa City in august, to start my PhD at Iowa U. Or do I say I'm starting a grad... eh... program? I don't know! I'm starting something. If I finish it you'll have to call me Dr. Diegzumillo III.

You'll be a few hours from an ex-girlfriend of mine (she's in the Upper Peninsula of MI). You'll be 16 hours from me.

Graduate program, or grad program for short.

Graduation would refer to the ceremony/act of having graduated.

The US is WAY too big to generalize, Iowa wouldn't be my pick personally, be prepared for storms, cold winters (about five months with below freezing temperatures) and tornadoes in spring/summer.

Don't know if you expect to be getting a car, but realize most Americans drive automatics instead of manual transmissions, we just had a send off party for a friend returning home to France, and she had a heckuva' time selling her manual car before leaving.

Getting a PhD is a lot like long-distance running. Instead of luck (which, mind you, you will need), I wish you perseverance, and lots of it!

Also, while you are in America, beware the HFCS. It kills a lot of people, and it's apparently everywhere.

Come the time of peril, did the ground gape, and did the dead rest unquiet 'gainst us. Our bands of iron and hammers of stone prevailed not, and some did doubt the Builder's plan. But the seals held strong, and the few did triumph, and the doubters were lain into the foundations of the new sanctum. -- Collected letters of the Smith-in-Exile, Civitas Approved

Heh, Iowa IS the corn belt. The only way you're avoiding high fructose corn syrup is if you bake, own a juicer, and don't imbibe any of the stimulants grad students use to get through the long haul. ;-)

Hopefully you won't have bands of people with assault rifles walking into your local restaurant to flaunt their "right to carry".

That's Texas, not Iowa. :P

Iowa is a nice quiet place.

Good luck, Diego, and Welcome to North America. Enjoy your stay. Please do not exit the ride until it comes to a full and complete, stop.

Finally got my PC back from the shop after my SSD got corrupted a week ago and damaged my motherboard. Scary stuff, but thank goodness it happened right after two months of FM development instead of wiping all my work before I could release it. New SSD, repaired Motherboard and BIOS, and we're ready to start working on my second FM with some added version control in the cloud just to be safe!

I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.

I've finally managed to log in to The Dark Mod Wiki. I'm back in the saddle and before the holidays start in full, I'll be adding a few new FM articles and doing other updates. Written in Stone is already done.

You cannot receive PMs. Could you please be so kind and check your mailbox if it is full (or maybe you switched off the function)?
