trying to run TDM on Android

I'm trying to run TDM on my android tablet (nexus 7, first edition, android 4.4.2).

 

This is a topic to give you some instructions and status.

I hope you can help me to fix several problems.

Its not meant to change the development direction to change the standalone to a mod. Its just for fun!

 

 

Installation:

  1. Install android app "DIII4a".
  2. Copy the "base"-folder (from doom 3) and the darkmod-folder (version 2.02) to the DIII4a folder on the sdcard.
  3. Run DIIII4a with the default settings.
  4. In doom 3, select the game in the mod section and load it. (its possible that the select-sound will loop)
  5. A loading screen (old watch) appears and at the bottom of this screen some error codes wil be displayed. Wait for a few seconds.
  6. You hear a Beeping sound and the TDM menu apears.

TIP:

  • Add the keyboard button to the DIII4A interface.
  • Add Bind "l" "com_allowConsole 1" to doomcfg.cfg.
    In game hit, push the keyboard button, push the "l" and then the tilde-button for the console.

Bugs/status:

  • Got the interface running, but doesnt hear the background music and serveral menu-sounds belongs to D3.
  • I dont see the trainingsmission in the "new mission" section. It cant also download the mission list.

At the moment i cant load the trainingsmission, because the map-command doesnt see this map.

Are you typing the name correctly..? the map file is called "training_mission.map" if that still dosent work, extract the training_mission.map file from the .pk4 and place it in your maps folder and see if that works.

Holy hell! That's pretty awesome to even see it load that far. lol

 

And sitll quite useless, because how on earth should TDM 2.02 standalone still run under D3? I'm amazed it doesn't crash outright. Guess for the next version a check should be included to stop TDM DLL to load under D3, as it isn't going to work anyway,and only gives people false hopes.... :rolleyes:

Well, that's the funny thing about open source and modding. Sometimes folks are more motivated to work on stuff that's "broken beyond

belief" or if the end-result is deemed "impossible" rather than improving or fixing something that's functional.

EG; This may attract a few new developer faces.

 

It is because of this quirk in social behavior I am almost tempted to suggest we release some of the broken rendering stuff in SVN just to see

if some coder get's frustrated enough to join the project to "fix it". :P

Yeah, but in all likeliness the result is "oh, yeah, it is actually impossible, and I spent already more than 10 minutes on it, boooring and school starts tomorrow again, so I'm outta, boys, good luck". Countless mod projects never got past the first experiments. I wish it was different, but... :rolleyes:

 

I'd rather take some fixes for some small, but annoying problems we can make available to all users, than some half-hearted attempts at running against the wall and do the "impossible". Like, we don't have support for characters like ã in our fonts - or we still don't have EAL, but heh, running TDM on Android, lets work on that... (It's not the "running on android" big I'm objecting to, but the "lets use a vanilla D3 engine to do so", which doesn't really help anyone).

How much RAM does that tablet have? If its 1 GB, I imagine you'll run into trouble loading missions.

Its 1 GB. with 32 gb storage.

I have not analysed the log above, but could this hardware problem created this crash?

If so could a mapper make for me small map to test (Like a one single small room with some torches and ambient sounds and 1 guard.)

Is it possible to make a swap file in android or sort?

As I said, the D3 vanilla engine lacks many things that the TDM engine added - like extended GUI commands, extended scripting events, extended animation frame commands, CVARs (we dropped a few, added others) and so on and on and on and on.

 

It's quite a fruitless endavour to track this stuff, because you would technically need to merge most (if not almost all) changes from the TDM engine back to the vanilla engine to run a TDM map under D3.

 

There is a reason we are not using the D3 engine anymore, but a modified variant of it.

 

Edit: And in case I didn't spell it out properly yet: If you load a TDM map under the D3 engine, the map is very likely to not work, or outright crash, because of missing features in the engine. And no, getting it to "almost run" doesn't help, because what good is it if you can run TDM maps on Android, but only one without scripts and where the AI does not work?

After 9 years, i got 2.12 trainingmission running on my android phone, using a fork of D4iii

Installation: download tdm 2.12 full package from moddb, extract the "darkmod"-folder, create a folder on the storage of your device, give it the name "diii4a", move the "darkmod" folder to that folder.  Download the apk from the releases page, install the apk, accept the storage permissions. 

Running the game: open the app, select the profile for tdm and hit the start game button. After this you get a black screen and wait some seconds (8 or 10) until the tdm menu appears.

Known bugs: game crashes while loading fm st lucia. (New job and trainingmission loads!) And some environmental lights are not lighted up.

How well do the on-display game controls work? Would it work to connect a gamepad to the phone and use that instead of the on-display controls?

I have a Galaxy S9 (4 GB RAM), so that should be a good test of ratcheting down the performance from the S21. I have 29 GB free so I am inclined to do this. I will connect it to a PC and use scrcpy to see how that looks and get a mouse and keyboard.

I think the biggest issue is ambient lighting.

The phones (etc) don't seem to support OpenGL 3.2 fully so the ambient lighting fails.

@freyk  If you invoke reloadGLSLprograms in the console does it return any errors?

      Taking a break to alleviate burnout. In retrospect, I probably shouldn't have jumped into a map-making contest so quickly after just finishing another project and especially with my busy schedule, but I do believe I have something that the community will enjoy. No clue if I'll be able to finish it on time for the competition if I factor in a break, but I'd rather take my time and deliver something of quality rather than engage in development crunch or lose part of the map's soul to burnout.
