Replacement mouse: recommendations

Well I attempeted to effect a repair on my SteelSeries Kinzu and just made it worse, so am now using my spare Kinzu.

I would like to know what mice people are using, specifically mappers who do a lot of DR work. After a lot of bug reporting with Greebo I am partly convinced that the kinzu is repsonsible for some of the issue I am having namely -

  • drag and snapback - when I have an item selected and move it a small distance to another location in ortho and it snaps back to original location etc.
  • shift-drag-select - when I am trying to shift-select a bunch of items and end selecting everying behind my selection and have ti hit exscape and start all over again.

I think the issue with the Kinzu is a combination of the following -

  • very light mouse that glide very easily - so when pressing the LMB its easy to move the mouse every so slightly causing a drag select.
  • short stroke LMB action, - which gets made worse as the LMB microswitch and the finger pad wear, reducing it still further.

In a previous attempt to combat the shift select issue I have been using a different k/b that has a lighter shift key, it happens less but it still happens.

Func MS-3. I use a claw grip for the most part but also like to relax and just lay my hand down on the mouse sometimes. I have used a lot of mice and this is the most comfortable mouse I've ever owned. I also have big hands. I love it so much, I bought one when they intro'd it and it had a beta teething issue where the cord was breaking internally and Func replaced my original. They were actually very helpful and great with replacement support. I didnt' have to ship the old one back and they shipped me the new one. Which also developed the same issue after about a month.

I sent it back in and by this time they had a V2 out with a cord nubby (like every other mouse ever made) and I've not had any issues with it since. Glad I've stuck with it through the PIA because it is incredibly comfortable. Great buttons/decent laser sensor/tactile feel/usable software and macros. If it broke I'd buy another immediately and I've never been that way with mice which is wierd :)

@Gman, the mouse looks good and the price is good, but it looks a tad smaller than your average mouse

@Lux - nice mouse and price, but the Func MS-2 is £40 and in looks and size is closer to my Kinzu.

@Ah - the G402 is another £40 mouse and has a cool mass effect vibe to it.

@Pranster - thats a £70 mouse with more buttons that I would know what to do with...

I have a cheapo Genius mouse that's not even wireless. It has two buttons and a mouse wheel!

Come the time of peril, did the ground gape, and did the dead rest unquiet 'gainst us. Our bands of iron and hammers of stone prevailed not, and some did doubt the Builder's plan. But the seals held strong, and the few did triumph, and the doubters were lain into the foundations of the new sanctum. -- Collected letters of the Smith-in-Exile, Civitas Approved

I'm more gamer then mapper, but Mionix Naos 7000 was my choice (although today I'd go with the laser version, 8200.) It's expensive, like 70-80€. I have smallish hands but this fit perfectly in size and weight. Not too light and pressing the LMB does keep the mouse in one place. Much more comfortable compared to Steelseries Sensei that I had previously. Also has speed buttons on top to choose from 3 different speeds. Can't live without that these days.

I try to control my chronic arm pain by switching between a Kensington trackball for everyday work and a fairly bog standard Microsoft mouse for games which need a lot of fast button clicking (like Starcraft). The trackball software also has a nice feature whereby you can configure it to simulate a drag if you click both buttons simultaneously, which is nice for horribly-designed games like RIFT which don't have a "toggle freelook" option and FORCE you to hold down the right button to change direction.

I've looked at the expensive "gaming" mice online, but am still not really sure what their advantage is. Aren't you just paying a huge premium for fancy LED effects, more precision and a few extra buttons? Although I do play MMOs, I don't really see why having more buttons on the mouse is going to be easier than just binding abilities to keys reachable by the left hand (e.g. 1-5, Q, E, F etc).

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Logitech-Wireless-Performance-Mouse-Tracks/dp/B002L3TSKC/

That's the mouse I have and it's a very good mouse. It's within your price range (including free delivery), it's very comfortable, has a good life battery that's rechargeable, it's wireless which gives you good freedom and as the description says its laser will work on just about any surface including glass.

I've had mine for over a year now and with heavy use its still powering on strong, it has some obvious wear and tear and some text on the mouse has faded a little but no major problems.

Logitech seem to be a good bet in general. I have looked at a few more reviews of MMO mice (the ones with loads of buttons) and the G600 seems to come out well. It's also less than £40, around half the price of the Razer Naga, and doesn't seem to have the button quality issues that are reported with the Razer mice. It looks like you can even use a custom Lua script to create the drag lock function that I want. I might consider getting one.

Tels and I have the Logitech M705.

Nice mouse, but the issue I have with that is that the buttons don't go all the way off to the edge (so depending on the physical size, I may end up pressing on the bezel rather than the button). And this might be a false worry as tech has moved on since last I used a wireless mouse, but how long do batteries actually last...?

But on the subject of Logitech mice, the Daedalus Prime G302 looks nice, is in the right price range, the LMB/RMB go right to the edge, and the size and shape is similar to the kinzu.

I turn the LEDs off except the one on the wheel to show which DPI profile I'm using. Personally I don't factor that in cause I could care less about lights, decals and marketing. I looked at the MS3 and the Mionix strickly based on ergonomic shape. My palm rests on the top at about a 30deg angle and it is like I said previously the most comfortable mouse I've ever used. Yeah you can get better ergonomics by not having your radius/ulna as crossed like with your hand in a pistol grip/vertical position but that position for me is too awkward and I'm not used to it for fast twitch FPS.

Mechanical switches in the mouse "hopefully" will add durability but other than that its mainly about the comfort of the shape and the fact that if you want to use claw grip with it you can, and its not heavy at all.

Previously used a death adder (the older IR model) until the right click started dbl clicking all the time. Had it for about 2-3 years. Prior to that a G5, a couple Logitech 518s, MS intellipoint. Never had anything that even approaches the comfort of the MS3 though a Logitech MX Revolution is amazing in the hand, I didn't want to deal with wireless weight and batteries, no thanks.

Mice are a pretty individual device so hey, get one that suits you. That Daedalus Prime you linked is wAy to ricer for me :)

Biker read my post from before, with that mouse you only have to charge once every 2-3 days and it comes with a charging cord

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
