I'm looking forward to it myself, it seems like they fixed the most common complaints of 8 and took the best parts of 7 and combined them into something really cool.

Anyone else going to be upgrading?

I'm looking forward to the dx12 performance enhancements for CPU threading and the pooled memory for SLi/Crossfire gfx cards.

Will everything that used to work work after the upgrade?

If anyone knew the answer to that they'd already be rich! Haha, "everything," is a big word :P

Never change a running system.

Never play on patch day (for windows versions I make that at minimum release year)

Usually with a new windows something that worked before stops working, and I have yet to see a real feature of a new one that is really worth it.

I checked new features of the new windows 10, and there seems to be absolutly nothing thats makes it a bit worth changing.

To me there are two reasons for changing sometimes:

-) There are big security holes, that are not in new versions (usually because of lacking support fot that version)

-) Something new I like to try really requires the new version (happens with games sometimes)

I'll stick with Windows 7, thanks.

Every small TDM update has more significant new useful things than the jump to the third next windows, as far as I can see at the moment.

if you have the gwx.exe (a.k.a get windows 10 advert spammer from microsoft (windows/system32/gwx/gwx.exe ) (not a virus or malware but spyware from microsoft) ) process running in the windows operating system then you should find someway to stop it from running else it stops other things from running like non direct x graphics drivers and some games that dont use directx, and it hogs all system resources and slow the computer boot time, and fills the hardrive with unwanted adverts from microsoft about windows 10. Uninstalling it wont get rid of it, windows will just re-install it as a important update from microsoft. it sets schedules to run itself every day upto the release time of windows 10 that you cant remove.

What is scary is that if you look up KB3035583 this is all it says:

Update enables additional capabilities for Windows Update notifications in Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 SP1

I wonder that since Win10 is going to essentially be "free" if with Windows Updates new found "capabilities" if we'll be receiving daily marketing popups right on our desktop every morning.

Wouldn't that be delightful!!!

Actually KB3035583 is an Optional update and I haven't installed it yet.... and likely won't now. Win10 can wait. There won't be any DX12 games out for a long long time since the consoles won't be running that any time soon. Maybe next year.

The little icon includes a check that your system and apps are compatible with Win 10 and it lies unless things which won't run on Win 8.1 will suddenly run on Win 10 including a number of old games and Office 2003 which work on Win 7

I still remember Windows Vista <_<

Since they didn't dump that one, I guess it will be some time before Windows 7 will start to not be supported by some games like many games with XP are, although not all.

"I really perceive that vanity about which most men merely prate — the vanity of the human or temporal life. I live continually in a reverie of the future. I have no faith in human perfectibility. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active — not more happy — nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago. The result will never vary — and to suppose that it will, is to suppose that the foregone man has lived in vain — that the foregone time is but the rudiment of the future — that the myriads who have perished have not been upon equal footing with ourselves — nor are we with our posterity. I cannot agree to lose sight of man the individual, in man the mass."...

Windows 8.1 came with this laptop, I was only ever tolerant of it anyway (although the touchscreen features are nice for my laptop, but I'm not losing those), and apparently W10 is an improvement over that. So I guess I have no reason not to upgrade.

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

I'm upgrading in the fall after Skylake comes out and I'm hesitant to install Win10 because it may be "tied to hardware". I currently have a technet Win7 ultimate edition which can be basically installed on every PC in your home and I seriously doubt that my Win10 Pro license is going to be like that. From what I've read, MS has been very... odd.... in their wording of the license terms. E.g. "for the life of the device".... wtf that is ugly.

Does anyone have any definite information to the contrary?

What's funny is how they will charge 109.99 for Windows 10 or 149.99 for the pro version if you're not running W7 or W8 when you can actually buy a full computer for that price that COMES with Windows. Some examples of computers you can buy for that price are the Intel compute stick (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883800002&cm_re=intel_compute_stick-_-83-800-002-_-Product) or a Windows 8 tablet. Both of these options come with Windows 8 and can upgrade to Windows 10 free.

Meanwile they cut features out of Windows 10, like DVD decryption support to make it cheaper to produce. I tried to talk about these things on other places like Reddit, but there are (I believe) astroturfers going around burying any criticism of the product. I wonder if they're the same guys who were paid to promote the XBox One on youtube. http://gizmodo.com/microshaft-is-paying-youtubers-for-positive-xbox-one-cov-1505629858

I'm just glad I can use Linux, avoid this predatory pricing scheme and I do not need to worry about being forced into "the cloud" to get updates or any of that nonsense. IMO attaching a local login to an email address is not a smart thing to do because of privacy concerns. I use Android, but I do not use a Google profile.

How is that different? You don't have to log into your Microsoft account on Windows 10 either. But, just like on Android, some apps will make use of it, so it's recommendable to log into it. Though it doesn't seem to be half as mandatory as logging into your Google account on Android. Without Google, Android is useless for the most part of it for me. It's the whole trick for me.

It's pretty obvious btw that Microsoft tries to do the same as Google or Apple now btw, with an included store, options to save your contacts to your MS account, Cortana, Maps, giving away Windows 10 for Windows 7 and 8 users. The emphasis is definitely on cloud and store stuff. There's probably not enough money made anymore with the pure Windows license, so they have to switch to another business model. Fine with me tbh. I'll probably use Bing a bit more in the future too, looks like it's a valid alternative to Google's search.

With Android, there are options like fdroid.org. Its completely free and no registration is required to install apps. Now of course Windows traditionally allows this, but they're trying to push the new marketplace. This marketplace thingy suffers from the problems traditionally associated with walled gardens, where the vendor takes a large chunk of the payment when an app is paid for, the vendor gets to be a gate keeper and decide what is allowed, and so on.

Apple, Google, and Microsoft will tell you that these market places are good for you because they're secure and vetted, but reality tells a different story. http://www.zdnet.com/article/the-microsoft-store-a-wretched-hive-of-scams-and-fake-apps/ and https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20150603/18215331214/apples-arbitrary-review-process-now-being-used-to-stop-competing-pebble-smart-watch.shtml and http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/google-in-the-enterprise/malware-in-the-google-play-store-enemy-inside-the-gates/

It doesn't bother me if a marketplace is implemented in Windows, as long as its optional. If they try and pull an Apple, where installing apps outside of the market place is prohibbitted, that would be over the line. The concern is that we are slowly heading in that direction and MS already showed they're not afraid to do it (see Windows RT).

I've finally managed to log in to The Dark Mod Wiki. I'm back in the saddle and before the holidays start in full, I'll be adding a few new FM articles and doing other updates. Written in Stone is already done.

I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).
