@Springheel/Melan

I have uploaded the pack to mega, could you guys when you get a minute have a look through and let me know which textures we can dump.

- mega

There are currently 83 unique textures in there, so Im hoping we can reduce that number. I can then make a start on getting them added to svn etc.

I thought none of the Vigil ones came with normalmaps? I only glanced at the first two wood ones, and it looks like they've just been run through a filter--the dark, dirty wood comes out sunken, which shouldn't happen.

Necrobob created normal maps, I understand what your refering to but I can see that a bunch of those wood textures arent suitable as thier too low res, so I will go through all the folder removing low res texture before you get any further.

[update]

reduce the unque texture cound down to 44

I would definitely remove the following:

/Vigil_brick

reinforced_stone_wall (should not be a single texture)

rough_hewn_stone (but keep rough_hewn_stone_hi)

stone_trim_* (tiny versions, keep stone_trim_grey-.hi)

stone_trim_dark (tiny)

/Vigil_cobblestones

chipped_slabs )doesn't look good)

fan_cobbles (we already have an equivalent)

Vigil_decals

These are all great.

Vigil_metal

brass_pipe_local (no DDS)

slimy_metal_hi (crappy)

thick_girder and thin_girder (tiny)

Also, most metal textures need specular maps.

Vigil_roof

tarred_roofing (no DDS)

Vigil_stone

grey_stone (cartoony)

limestone (cartoony)

Vigil_wood

weathered_planks_hi (cartoony, odd colours)

I still think some of these are so different they will change the look of the mod substantially if people start using them. A bunch of textures need speculars.

Why don't we do it from the other direction and only pick the ones that we specifically need? We've been adding a LOT of new textures lately, and there has to be a point at which we stop doing it, unless the textures 1) fill a need that isn't covered by our own textures or 2) is of such great quality we just can't turn it down.

2 seems to be an issue, at least in terms of meshing with our existing textures, so we really should only be adding things that meet 1. Do we really need more brick or cobblestone textures?

Not that many, I agree. Taking another look at the textures with these eyes, here are my "these are really good" picks:

/Vigil_brick

mossy_stone_blocks (ruined/rundown textures are still few and far between)

rough_hewn_stone_hi (this kind of raw stonework is also scarce)

stone_blocks (a good rounded stone texture; not essential but nice)

/Vigil_cobblestones

mossy_cobbles (a good fit for semi-abandoned areas)

square_cobbles (I like the bold colour variety and the slight irregularity)

Vigil_decals

Again, these are all great.

Vigil_metal

railing (great decorative texture, metals are still a category we can expand. Also fits well with my previous Victorian girders)

slimy_metal_hi (excellent base metal texture for corroded stuff - I'd also add it as a skin option for multiple objects)

vigil_rust (ditto)

walkway (slightly on the smaller side, but worn metal treadplate will be very hard to find if we don't take this one)

Vigil_roof

-

Vigil_stone

-

Vigil_wood

dark_beams (non-essential, but a good dry wood texture)

old_planks_hi (do we have this shade of wood planks?)

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
