I am ashamed

I am ashamed that I never knew about great games like thief or System shock 2 when they were released, didn't really have a pc to run those anyways. Only now do I get to experience Thief through TDM and SS2 thanks to steam.

If you look for specified game-genres on game newssite, you never miss great games like this game.

Search for genres (of a combination of it) like stealth, first-person shooter, action rpg, free-roaming, etc.

Old games i reconmmend are the thief-, deus ex-, splinter cell-, S.t.a.l.k.er-, elder scrolls-, systemshock- and bio shock series.

Or upcoming games like metal gear 5 and fallout 4.

Thanks, I already have played most of them and own a few, I just meant that back in the late 90's, early 2000's I didn't know about Thief or SS2, mainly played Quake, Unreal Tournament and star craft back then.

Nothing to be ashamed of. Even if you did have a PC good enough to run such games, there wasn't much of an internet back then (unless you count queuing at a public library for a 30-minute session on a single shared machine connected to a 40kbps modem), so you had much less opportunity to discover new games unless they happened to appear on the cover disk of a PC magazine.

Welcome!

I would Love to see more Lovecraftian FMs around heres. The mood is great, but difficult to conjure. My usual error is giving answers. In horror, you do not need answers, you just need implications.

A shame confessing thread? Interesting construct in the era of internet where humility isn't exactly the dominating trait. I'll confess something, too:

I never completed Thief2. I made it to the last mission, got distracted and did something else. I never returned. Ever. Can you forgive me? ;)

I'm in that same boat with System Shock 2 :P, got the game fully modded, but the environment is scary as hell at times.

Internet only became affordable in my country a few years ago, before that it was around $1 pay-per-minute on a 56k. Now most here can afford 1-4mb dsl lines lol.

As others have already noted, nothing to be ashamed of. I've known about Thief since the times it was still a relatively new series, but I only played the games for the first time roughly a decade ago and have been playing them ever since. I've added TDM to the list as soon as I remembered last year that it's already supposed to be standalone by that point. I've never played the second System Shock, but I intend to do so in the near future, just to complete my collection of Dark Engine games.

Welcome and have fun with TDM. B)

P.S. The old Thief games are still playable on modern machines - you just need to install fan-made patches to make them fully compatible, but otherwise, they're the exact same games they were back during their release. (There are also some additional patches and packs to improve the graphics and so on, if you're interested in that sort of improvement.)

I would very much love to play a Poe-inspired mission! I have an idea for one myself, but never ended up building it. Go for it! :)

Come the time of peril, did the ground gape, and did the dead rest unquiet 'gainst us. Our bands of iron and hammers of stone prevailed not, and some did doubt the Builder's plan. But the seals held strong, and the few did triumph, and the doubters were lain into the foundations of the new sanctum. -- Collected letters of the Smith-in-Exile, Civitas Approved

The two things that did SS2 in for me were the egg-hunt and frickin' space ninjas. Pretty much in the middle of the Rikenbacher I threw in the towel too. Then I came back a year or so later and finally finished it off, which I was glad I did. The Body of the Many was worth the price of admission, but I still just tolerated those parts.

Thief2 wasn't a debate. But it's true some of those last missions were on the dud side, the mansion and Soulforge.

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

      Beta test(er) tip:
Test your mission at least once with all lights on. This can be done using notarget in console. Maybe just quickly fly around with noclip.
Also test all lights which are off by default (enable all lights via script?). Mission testers will miss a lot of light bugs, because they take out lights with water arrows etc. and don't turn on lights so they don't spot light leaks etc. I've seen this now in some recent new missions after they're released.

Personal reminder for me to actually get back to TDM and all the missions I missed.

What is actually grammatically correct when it happens in the future? “Paul Atreides is an idiot” or ‘Paul Atreides was an idiot’? or ‘Paul Atreides will be an idiot’? The latter would at least fit in with the whole psychic and providence stuff!
