Having a lot of problems with TDM

Recommended Posts

Every so often when I make a savegame TDM crashes.

It seems to occasionally corrupt a save in that it put underscores in when I hadn't.

When I try to load one of these saves I get some message about "bad cache".

Also, everytime I start TDM it has the screen resolution set at the lowest even though

I set it to 1600 x 1200.

Finally, I get very bad frame rate and occasion momentary freezes, but that's probably

due to my sorry a.. Intel HD chip!

One more thing - is there anything like ctrl+alt+shift+end to go on to the next mission in a campaign?

(I tried it and it didn't work!)

Cogito, ergo, sum. Cogito?

Strange error you got there. So it crashes without a message when you want to save a game? Maybe you have not got the privileges to write something on the particular area you want to? Try administrator priviledges or something similar or best would be reinstalling the game from scratch.

As far as I am informed there is no way to skip certain missions in a campain, but maybe someone else can tell you better.

Silverd, it doesn't crash everytime, just about maybe 30 - 40% of the time when I make a save. It does crash without a message and then lists the attempted save with underscores in it (I don't use them in my save names). If I try to load that save it crashes and I get a message that says something about a "bad cache". Saves that this doesn't happen to work fine.

Oh heck, no way in TDM to force mission end? Dumb Dumb me accidently deleted the saves from NHAT mission 1 (srry bikerD!) and I would like to be able to go on with mish 2 without having to tread the ground I just recently trod!

First thing to do is update your intel GPU drivers if possible.

btw I hate laptops for gaming, that is why i never recommend gaming on laptops, especially if they only have a intel GPU.

I'm afraid the GPU is the root cause of your problems, try to bring the graphics down the must you can and disable EAX4 if you have it enabled, it causes problems.

If you know the name of a map, not the full mission name but the individual names of the maps in the mission (you can open the mission .pk4 with any normal winzip tool, then look in the maps folder), you can force them to run by using the console, like so.

bring down the console (mine uses the key above tab next to key 1) type - map levelname.map - then click enter, this requires the mission to be installed first i think.

NOW THIS MAY cause serious problems if the mission requires you to have some special item in the inventory that you can only get from playing from the beginning. USE THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Oki, thanks HMart!

I figured the on-board chip was the problem - they have NEVER been good nuff for gaming!

I also hate gaming on a laptop! (but twas all I could afford) :(

They are generally not very powerful and I have to keep the touchpad disabled cuz I use a mouse anyways and my left hand

tends to keep "clicking" the pad! and always at the most freakin inopportune times!!! :o)

By "bring the graphics down" do you mean run it at the lowest res?

I will check the net for any poss. driver update but it's been my xp that things like on-board GPU chips aren't supported by their makers for very long!

I don't think I have EAX4 - what is it?

I have 7z as my fave unzipping program and I guess I could do as you suggest, I don't think mission 2 requires anything

from mission 1. But since I have gone on and gotten utterly captivated and captured by Moonbo's un-be-liev-able FM's

I will return to the awesome NHAT after I finish H.o.L.S. and just start over so all's fresh and glinty in my old taffer mind! :P:D

Bringing the graphics down is not only bringing the resolution down, that is one of the first things you do yes but on some TFT and laptop screens that means blurry image because they have a fixed native resolution, but because you are gaming on PC and one of the good things about PC gaming is the ability to modify and tweek your game you can do this, http://www.tweakguides.com/Doom3_1.html TDM is based on the Doom 3 engine, called idtech 4, so you can learn about how to tweek the engine graphics, know that if you disable shadows, disable normal maps and specular maps tdm can even run on a toster, will not look that good tho.

About EAX 4... forget it, is a sound tech made by Creative but is useless for TDM (does not work) even on Creative sound cards, the TDM developers are even thinking of removing that from the game.

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
