I played Thief 1 + 2 + Deadly Shadows + 4, But I was wondering where it all went wrong, LGS had the best of intentions but why they couldnt get another project from eidos if thief 2 was successfull, I mean it must have not been, I played Terra Nova, System Shock, hell untima underworld... Is sequels really that bad if after the second game, the company goes bust

It was a combination of needing to cover Daikatana flopping, when Eidos somehow got involved, then selling to a software giant as a gambit to cover loses that didn't actually care about making games and just unceremoniously gutted them. Just bad luck really. The games LGS made themselves sold just fine.

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

I was actually talking about 2 different companies, Eidos and the second 'software giant', not Eidos, but a military contractor company that did military tech software, that I guess was interested in diversifying and LGS's sim tech, but (possibly after changed mgt) not gaming. We only found out about it reletively recently.

I guess your general point still stands though.

I heard that eidos purposefully withheld money (or delayed royalty cheques) from LGS and that caused them to go bust which in turn allowed eidos to buy them.

Also if you haven't seen it this video may interest you as its the last day at Looking Glass Studios

Except Eidos didn't buy them. The military contractor did. That's what I was trying to say. But Eidos still put them in that situation, or contributed to it. Oh, well, it's all explained somewhere.

Either way a great company who should have been celebrating not closing after the release of Thief 2 is gone.

Some of those forces migrated to Ion Storm to make Thief 3, but even that situation didn't last.

Thief 3 was the last game that was the closest to what the franchise was about.

"I really perceive that vanity about which most men merely prate — the vanity of the human or temporal life. I live continually in a reverie of the future. I have no faith in human perfectibility. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active — not more happy — nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago. The result will never vary — and to suppose that it will, is to suppose that the foregone man has lived in vain — that the foregone time is but the rudiment of the future — that the myriads who have perished have not been upon equal footing with ourselves — nor are we with our posterity. I cannot agree to lose sight of man the individual, in man the mass."...

For me The Darkmod really is even better than the originals (and of course better than the new "Thief" too). So it did not went that wrong in the end i think.

I once was disappointed by the loss of that nice studio (also missed Bullfrog Productions) too. And it really is sad how it happened. But as time flew by The Darkmod raised and it maybe would not have got enough sun in the shadow of a commercial corporation pushing out one quality title after the other causing modders to constantly having to adopt to new engines and tools - maybe even having to open them for modding first.

LGS did define the genre and implemented the reference titles. Now others adopt it and do variations on it like the great mappers here do in their FMs. We already have so much more different deviations from the original theme than LGS could have provided.

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
