I already own it and it's fantastic what they're done with an old classic. I just wish they would finish Xen already so they can release the whole game, i've been holding off another playthrough with the steam version until such time.

 

The multiplayer is pretty fun as well, also something cool I heard for those interested in the HL universe is that other companies are actually giving a Black Mesa treatment to Opposing Force and Blue Force.

As someone who's friends with some of the developers, why yes, you should totally buy Black Mesa if you haven't already!

I played this thing a few years ago when it game out as a HL2 (source engine) mod for free. It was the way for me to play through HL1 as I never played it back in the day. So this version is that with multiplayer? Or am I misunderstanding something?

It has the multiplayer part (and the steam workshop too with a bunch of single and multi maps).

I'm considering buying this. I played the very first release (don't recall how many years ago it was) and I found that while the initial levels were spectacular, the latter levels felt rushed and inconsistent in quality. If there's been significant refinement to those latter levels since that initial release, I'd be more inclined to buy it since I was kind of left with a bad aftertaste.

@Lowenz regarding the "there are 3 years of development/refinement" - is there a comparison somewhere because all I can see on the steam page is -

Early Access version is the TODAY version.

 

You can obviously download the 2012 HL2 mod version and play it

I ended up buying it while there was still a sale. However, like Goldwell, I will probably wait until they finish Xen before I play through the single player again
