I shouldn't have started this after a long tiring trip , can't get going apart from second (?) floor. Oh dear , maybe try again when less tired perhaps but so far not my sort of mission.

Whatever you do, it sounds like you should get some rest ;)

Sorry to be arsy Goldwell , it's me I know , sometimes

I wonder if I'm playing a completely different mission to everybody else. Are we supposed to jump through that open window to find the elevator? Can't repair it until I find it and there's nothing behind that door with the note apart from blanked doors and someone with a sword who attacks me when I go in there. Oh , and the vent on high in the cupboard room , been down there and pinched everything in sight.Maybe I should try that again because I maybe missed the lift there

The elevator isn't broken it's just locked remotely. Following the readable next to the elevator it states that the unlock button is in the managers office.

Head into the managers office which is down the end of the hall on the first floor (this is the floor you drop into once you fall out of the vent.. you know with the food and wine around you), go into his living room and frob the globe, it will spin and reveal a little liquor cabinet. Inside there is a key, walk out the living room and the office is right infront of you, unlock it with the key. You will see a safe next to his desk, pick the safe and inside is the button to unlock the elevator.

Thanks Goldwell for your help and understanding ,

I really appreciate it , not making excuses , but at 73 I'm missing more than I used to.
It's happening with my chess play too , I used to be a tournament player , now I'm missing the blinking obvious in things due to increased medication for a dicky heart! All I saw in that safe was the bag of money! When I'm less tired I'll resume , in better spirits than before I hope! I love playing all versions of Thief and am loathe to give up !

P.s Far on now , very good !

Getting a lot of crashes to desktop though.A few times had to resort to turning computer off.Have not had it before with other missions, not technical enough to go into the whys and wherefores ,surfice to say I'm saving more than usual now ! Especially as I had to go back over a tricky bit one time.

Glad to hear you're enjoying it! In terms of crashing i'm not sure why it happens either. It might be because of the very strange way I built the map or maybe something else, a couple of people had reported crashes but nothing too substantial.

Hello Goldwell, I had to make an account just to comment on this mission.

I must say, as someone who played through every possible dark mod mission so far, this is definitely my favorite, along with King of diamonds.

At first, I thought it would be a short, walled in mission, but boy, did I underestimate it (for some reason A noble home did not sit that well with me, so I consider this to be a grand opening of the series).

I know a lot of the posts here seem to be overly critical about your work on this gem (as might my own post soon turn out to be), but you have to understand that when you see something so close to perfection in a mission, you are just left with that annoying feeling of frustration that it missed a mile by an inch, and you don't want it to be perfect,YOU HAVE TO.

Now, for some spoilers.

I will leave the first part out because it is polished to perfection as it is. My comments would like to go towards the abandoned city, for the most part, because it seemed to me as if it had been given less love and time than the first part. It was fantastic. Rodamill was a favorite of mine, and I still miss its port to the dark mod. The Cragscleft part was also something that drew a chuckle out of me, especially the zombie surrounded by flies that greets you as you exit the water. Now to the not so pleasant part. I liked the second part of the mission, I really did. More than the first part, to be precise. I especially liked the abandoned city theme. As someone who finished all possible horror games, from pre-thief games (yes, thief is a benchmark for me) like Resident evil to games like Amnesia and Penumbra, I must say I felt genuinely unnerved by your vision of those ruins. I know you have your idea about the whole series and how to proceed, but I believe it would be best to split this map into two parts, right after you pick up the first gem, and let the second mission deal with the abandoned city and ruins (and possible other scenarios yet to be revealed) as their own mission. This horrible sense of dread and urgency those ruins evoked and the panicked letters of their former residents as they are picked off one by one like cattle don't seem like they deserve to be crammed as a rushed back story to the heist at the third floor casino (which would still be one of the best missions around, even on its own). You do as you wish, of course, this is just my humble opinion. Perhaps the whole mission wouldn't be as good on its own as two separate missions with less content, perhaps not. That is ultimately for you to decide. I can't know that until I see it.

And now to the point why I'm even writing this. Haters will always hate. Please don't give up on this one, I'm dying to see the next installment. I've already written what I believe should be improved, but feel free to completely ignore it. It is your work, after all. :)

Great stuff , really enjoying it now I've got into it. Getting crashes as I said before , must be my computer I guess. Just having to make more saves than usual!

I'm at

The final stage ( abandoned town?) part of the mission. What a surprise , thought it was all over when I passed through the gates into the sewers. I'm missing the key for the old rusty door with the note on it saying don't pick it. Can someone give a clue?

Many thanks!

general clue

Search for the key in the part of town that's only accessible by climbing through the fallen tower

exact location

After you enter the part of town by climbing through the fallen tower, face the windmill and it's the house to the right of the windmill. Go inside and you will find a chest, pick that open and there's your key

Thank you Goldwell , very enjoyable. I liked

the other thief appearing on the top floor.Fortunately , I'd already got what he wanted. to allow me to get through the door. And the way you could get to other properties from the gardens on the top floor. Also , the homage to Thief Gold with the railway lines , walking dead and mines ( what was it called Clegscleft Prison or something , I forget now after all this time .) Look forward to the train ride!!

I know I'm hopeless at these missions sadly , but couldn't for the life of me

get through the final door without ' no
clipping'. I tried every combination of those Rubik cubes/ squares ! ( or I thought I did , obviously not! )

But , as I said , I really really enjoyed it once I got going. Look forward to the next episode. :D

This was a great mission, Goldwell. I swear, every time I thought I was finally done... no, I wasn't anywhere close to finishing. Amazing.

That bedroom murder scene scared the shit out of me. That haunt is, what, unkillable? And for the longest time I thought the pagan orb meant the orb floaring above the haunt, so I died a gazillion times trying to get it since the haunt doesn't leave that room. Dang it.

When I made it to the sewers and that creepy red floating thing started coming for me, I was screaming at the screen, "where's my damn portal? Hurry up!" That thing was freakish!

I figured when I got the objective to find the three crystals from the scary flaming skull dude that I'd never be done and that I'd be hunting those three crystals for ages... But then the mission cut just when I got to see... a train! Sorry. Excuse me. I meant, a steam locomotive. I don't think we've had any of those on TDM before. Have we? The train was done so well with T2x and okay with All Torc. This is huge! I can't wait to see how you implement it, Goldwell.

I can't wait for the third mission. Please tell me, G, you're, like, a week from completion. I know it took you two years to do this one since the first but... pretty please with sugar on top? :D

Here are all of the exact locations to the secrets, spoiler warning obviously.

Secret 1: In the vent at the start, turn left right after the conversation you hear through the vent about the guards and the rats. Look up and you will see a frobable vent in that section that veers off to the left and take the note and the purse to collect that secret.

Secret 2: Inside Griswolds apartment, check his toilet for a rather smelly surprise

Secret 3: On the ground floor, enter the room on the left just before the elevator (you will see dripping from the ceiling as soon as you enter it). Ontop of his bookshelf you will find a golden sword

Secret 4: On the top floor (where Lord Balcon resides), goto the music room and frob the Lyre musical instrument, this will open up a panel on the floor. Take that key and unlock the chest in Suite Four, take everything inside to get that secret.

Secret 5: In the priests room on the top floor, frob the lever under his bedside table, this will move the builder banner and reveal his secret cache

Secret 6: In Lord Balcons room, go into his bathroom and then proceed outside. The statue rested up against the wall adjacent to the fountain has two diamond eyes.

Secret 7: In Griswolds kitchen, go into the cupboard, move the boxes and take the trowel. Head to the rooftops from Lord Balcons floor. Find the warehouse and head up the ladder, there will be a greenery there. Look for an odd patch of dirt, use the trowel on it to reveal the secret.

Secret 8: Unlock John The Jewelers safe to unlock his jewels and complete the secret. If you don't want to figure out the code it is:

0451

And that's everything. Sorry it's not in order, hope that helps.

Just wanted to review your map..

Overall the map I felt to be 10/10 or as close to that as any map since the original thief series.

The story - from intro video, the voice acting and bits of information from books or notes made the whole epode connect togeather so well.

Lighting, enviorment and design/layout - The lighting on the map is excellent and fit the mood for each phase of the mission. The areas of shadows and light and dark made a different challenge on each floor of the building and I felt that the layout was just right for each room i entered..not to sparse or over cluttered.

Length and suprises - I enjoyed how suprisingly full the mission was and felt that just as i thought the mission was coming to an end, when another objective was set or part of the story was uncovered, it lured me into wanting to learn more and more so felt compelled to continue. Second floor was full of suprises which was a highlight of the mission for me.

Kudos for the effort put into this and to polish it off to such a high standard!

Just played this through this weekend and I have to say that it is a very impressive achievement! There were a lot of plot twists, really solid story and great atmosphere. Was stumped on a couple of things through the mission but at least it was only optional things. I think I will replay the mission in the near future and try to complete it without spoilers ^^

So the things that I thought were a bit hard to figure out:

The combination for the loot containers in John's apartment. I figure the execution note was a sort of key to figure it out, but I couldn't find any readable that told the story i.e. gave the actual numbers.

The pagan orb for the ritual was hard to find... I couldn't figure out who the cultist brother was. I may have simply missed that area or overlooked who lived there.

Final thoughts:

I really liked how much time and effort were obviously spent on making the mission gorgeous and immersive. I especially liked the subtle (and sometimes less than subtle) hints to Thief / Thief II, the bounty of conversations to overhear and the unexpected scary moments, without really being cheap jumpscares. The little bit of voyeurism with the naked lady in the shower was a nice touch as well. Certainly wasn't expecting that!

Also a bit curious, is this Corbin the same Corbin as in Springheel's missions? Or is the name a coincidence?

Thanks for playing! It's always lovely to read people appreciating the effort that goes into a mission and noticing all of the little details and thief references along the way :)

As for the main protagonists name, in the accountant story the main protagonist is Garrett and the universe is set just after the events of Thief 2: The Metal Age however because we can't use that name/universe I called him Corbin who according to the TDM universe lore wiki is the main protagonist in the dark mod lore. I'm not sure exactly what Springheels Corbin story is but mine is just a name change for legal reasons so any connection between Springheels Corbin and my Corbin is only in name.

This mission has been quite fun so far, but I'm having a huge problem. I got the "special loot" for my contact supposed to open up level 3 after he told me to get it, but now I can't interact with him anymore. He lights up, but he does not respond to frobbing or the inventory use command under any circumstance.

Try highlighting the item in the inventory and frobbing him.

As far as I'm aware that's the only way forward, if that fails then the only recommendation I have is to noclip through the front door and turn off noclip as soon as you pass through it.

I'm not sure why this is broken for you as this is the first I've heard of the problem and no one has reported an issue at that part before.

Let me know how you go

I already tried all objects. I did not get the item separately. I had a feeling the gem in the loot overview would represent it, but that didn't work either. Maybe I just fell victim to an unusual bug, but it was replicated upon reattempt. I suppose noclip it is then. Thanks anyway!

I uploaded a savegame if you wanna check it out for insights anyway.

Just to clarify you are giving the guy on the top floor

the alien in the jar found inside Gridwolds apartment?

Uh, hmm. No. I thought it refered to the jewel in John's apartment. Did he say Griswold's apartment? I got it mixed up then, lol. This explains everything.

He did say Griswold's apartment, also the objective reads "(NEW) Find the mysterious item in Griswolds apartment" :)

If you need help finding it just let me know and I can post the solution to finding it

I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).
