Fan Mission: The Accountant 2: New In Town by Goldwell (2016/05/09)

Playing this FM ATM, and really liking it. I wonder, though,

i broke in to some house, through some vents, and, in the office room, there's a strange pagan artefact, and a writing saying that there's some kind of gem hidden in the attic of the guy's brother. I wonder where that attic is, frankly, i got a bit lost in the mission, and, especially, the vent system, because it's so freaking huge, and i don't want to search all over again. I really can't imagine where the said attic, or house is, because, i literally have been everywhere, at least i feel like i have.

Edit: Nevermind, got it. :D

Knew that shovel would become good for something. :P

Or, well, that wasn't it. Guess i was in the wrong attic. So, i still have to ask where that attic where you will find the orb is.

The orb is hidden in the attic that has lots of containers and paintings laying around, when you first enter the building the attic is in you will crawl out of a vent and there will be a bed right infront of you, open up the door and go down the hallway to another door, inside there you will find some wine racks and a ladder leading you to the attic.

Once you find the orb be very careful transporting it from the attic to the pot in the mages home as it tends to break.

If you're stuck finding the orb up there, the next spoiler will tell you where the orb is

Ok so if you're stuck and cannot find the orb, once you're in the right attic head over to the chest on the other side, whilst facing the chest walk backwards (still facing it) and then on your left behind some clutter you will find the orb sitting there, inbetween the clutter and the wall

Sorry, but, i'm really completely lost.

Assuming i'm in the house where you initially find the bowl with the mixture in, in the office room with the description where the orb is to be found, where excatly is the place you're describing? I'm not sure if i'm even near that place.

Meh...

think i've looked everywhere now, and still can't friggin' figure out where that cultist brother lives, or where his attic is... the only attic i found is the one where you find the secret, when you use the shovel to dig...

Ok, found it...

Well, a little hint where exactly he resides would have been great. Didn't even notice the vent shaft there...

Finished this up last night, (sorry RL hasn't let me play in awhile) and enjoyed the challenge.

It was like 4 missions in one lol. 3rd floor casino was a bit of a challenge grabbing loot from the table but only made them curious so all was good.

I found all the secrets and most of the loot (personal goal). I know I missed the cup with the mummy the second go through. Got it the first time but died a horrible death trying to get back into the vent and forgot it on the retry but wasn't going back for it. There was also a bag of jewels (I think) that I couldn't frob no way no how in the safe in the office. I had to come here for a hint about the code (painting) , oh well. I had saved that for (what I thought lol) was the almost end after (again) having died a nasty death.

And then we get into the creepy. lol. BTW, thanks for giving me enough arrows to get through the spiders - whew. I managed to find 3 crystals before it ended and after reading above, I realized that's what was suppose to happen.

So thanks for all your hard work, Goldwell and I look forward to more from you.

Thanks for the review Thiefette. I have another mission which is a city mission in the works that I'm hoping to release next month so keep an eye out for it :)

The sequel for the accountant 2 probably won't see release until next year though.

Slightly off topic "Accountant 1: A Noble Home" isn't in the downloader list, I was hoping to play them one after the other.

I assume there's some issue with it, anyone know when it's likely to be available again ?

Sorry found the right thread, I'll ask there ... well I would but it's locked so I can't

It's being reworked.

"Let me guess - little blue men with three heads stole your sweetroll?"

The story of the accountant story arc changed quite a bit. And so the old version of the first accountant FM didn't represent the story moving forward. What I have planned is to release the reduxed version shortly after my current WIP is released.

Thank you

Loving Accountant 2 btw

The other thief was a nice surprise

--EDIT--

I was starting to wonder how big this mission was very impressive and I learned something

I learned the one thing I absolutely hate is bad guys that I can't <expletive deleted> see

And am I alone in thinking

The floating skull guy

Is going to be a bad 'un

I liked it overall but it got a bit ridiculous after a while. I also hated how many dumb references there were, calm down with those. The vault tec lock, keypad code (I admit that one was funny and a well done puzzle but that code has been done to death), the doctor going to Daggerfall, the ayylmao, it all just gets too silly but overall I still liked the mission.

I actually managed to find the orb and deliver it to the pot. But nothing happens.

Only then I read your warning that the orb is fragile.

I tried to throw it against the wall and nothing happens. Is it possible that it's already broken?

How do I recognize that?

If so, is there any chance to...ehm...repair or get a new one? :-)

Thanks in advance...

I will have to push out an update that fixes this and a couple of other things too.

I'm quite busy with other projects at the moment so I just haven't had a chance to get around to it yet. But it is on my radar.

Only few seconds ago I managed to finish this FM.

I'll keep it very short - I expected a nice mission (like the beautiful Acc1 or St. Lucia), however I experienced several VERY different missions seamlessly bundled together with a truly captivating story.

The unexpected changes and turns in the story-line kept me tensed up till the very end of the mission.

When I start playing a mission (or any other game in general), I'm looking forward to finish it to prove myself how good I am.

While playing this one I changed my objective....and started to enjoy the playing itself, the story and the atmosphere...and actually wasn't pleased at all when I succeeded and finished.

I don't know how you are doing this, but you are doing it damn good...

P.S. After finishing the mission and watching the end titles I could hear the sound denoting the end of mission, however I was left with a dark screen forever.

I had to press ESC and force-quit the mission (from menu).

I decided to play this mission on 2.06 beta.

I do not play TDM often now. I mostly played missions about six years ago.

I have just played through the Accountant missions, and I must say: for the first time I feel like I have played a real Thief game :D , not just a fan-made mod.

I wonder how you do all of this? <_< Do you have a job? a family? Maybe you don't waste time on sleep? :o Or all the people from "Special Thanks" also worked equally hard on the mission? ;)

Most of the missions I played so far have all the bare gameplay necessities in place, but they rarely even have a briefing.

But this mission is so well-polished! It seems that no area of the game was discarded: there are cutscenes, lots of voice acting, some special models/animation.

There are a lot of interesting stuff to search for, even for a moderate player like me. And this is not even counting secrets, which are also plenty

It returns back the joy of playing Thief! I found a lot of things which are somewhat hidden, but which are not devilishly hard to find (especially if you read everything). Going through a large diverse map, trying not to get lost in it, is also something which reminds Thief in a good sense.

Some specific points:

1. I was sure that the mission would be over when I go to basement. When it was not over, I was pretty sure that it would be over after I talked to the skull. I still think that it was not a good idea to include the crystals search into this mission. In fact, the mission ends suddenly in the midst of the search. Won't it be awkward to start the next mission from this point?

2. At some point the mission reminds me Thief TDP. Especially after the skull told me about four crystals which I have to steal for him. Isn't it a bit too much?...

3. I did not get the thing about the painting, but I managed to bruteforce the code lock (with some pruning). I have read the note about execution, so I assumed that x) no one stopped it and y) one of the other three numbers are sum of the remaining two numbers. Still I was surprised when the code fit

I also have some questions (not sure if they can be answered):

1. What do you see / what happens when you do the pagan ritual and get into the other realm (language barrier hurts me here) ?

2. Does the invisible wanderer have something in common with the undead warrior under the red glowing sphere on the second floor? The red light is very similar in both cases.

Or it is related to the cultist rituals which you can read about in the attic? Because the wanderer is described as someone who hides in shadows and attacks on surprise, plus all the skeletons have swords/daggers in their hearts.

Thanks for the kind words, i'm really happy that you enjoyed it! Now to answer some of these questions.

In terms of how my missions are built I create the concepts, story and build all of the levels however the devil is in the details. Among the special thanks people there are coders such as Obsttorte and Grayman who stepped upto help me to either create or bug test scripts of different scenes such as puzzles and game breaking bugs as I am rather helpless with coding, custom animations such as the pipe smoking priest were created by Sotha, Moonbo helped lend his talents to work on the briefing video script, Crowind created the briefing video, I reached out to Epifire to create custom models such as the telescope holder, the leather chair and the cart model in the mine section, other people listed have helped out either through beta testing or providing their time for vocal lines, and the list goes on and on. People who are kind enough to offer their free time to help out helped to make this mission as well. Because without any of them this mission would not have turned out the way it did.

I start out all of my missions with a very specific vision and a way I want them to play out and then just build based on that. Considering this mission took me two years to make I don't think that's a complete sacrifice of life haha :)

I do not plan on doing this forever but while my passion is here and I still have a couple of stories left in me to tell I will stick around :)

As for the spoiler specific points

1 - I knew that most people were expecting the mission to end then, but I decided to change up the formula a bit. Whether that was right or wrong is entirely upto the eyes of players but within me I felt it was the right decision to do at the time. The accountant 3 which I am working on now picks up right where this left on, so on a train. It doesn't feel awkward however, just a very long delay between telling the stories of accountant 2 and eventually accountant 3 when it comes out. I have already completed the story though and am excited to finally share the missions with everyone. I think once people play through the whole campaign things will begin to make sense.

2- I take a lot of inspiration from Thief: TDP and Thief 2, I don't think it's too much though. Besides there are no real original ideas anymore ;)

Just recently I sent through a vocal script to a good friend of mine to record and he sent me a video of a similar conversation happening in one of the thief games. When I wrote the script I wasn't thinking of that part of the game at all, but it goes to show even when you believe you have an original idea it can turn out not that way. So I just create whatever I feel is right and let people draw parallels where they see fit. And then of course there are purposeful nods to the Thief trilogy as I love those games :)

3 - That code is actually the old security keypad code that was used to get into the looking glass studios building. Since many developers, even as recently as Prey and Deus Ex have used that code as a sort of nod to those original developers and that's what I was doing here. The painting just so happened to fit the riddle and that was that.

As for the other questions

1 - The pagan ritual was a flashback scene to the nobles house that the player breaks into to steal the necklace from accountant 1. It uses the old level not the updated one (which I will have to fix eventually) but I wanted to show off a scene where the player can see how the nobleman reacts when he wakes up and realizes his necklace was gone. And then he turns around and spots you. So it's a bit of unwritten lore to the accountant universe now but my feelings were that he realized it was you and then tracked you down through the fence that hired originally to steal it. That's why the fence sold you up the river and that spirit leaves the note in the sewer thus changing the course of your fate.

2 - Those evil spirits that are after the crystals manifest themselves in different ways. Perhaps they are traps, perhaps they a possessed humans or perhaps they are any of the pieces of bad luck you run into. There is constantly a fight in the dimensions beyond the accountant world between the spirit who wants the crystals for themselves for evil and the spirits who want them for good. But who really defines good or evil? More of this will come out in the later missions in the campaign. For now it's just a taste.

Ok, now for the 2.06 beta results.

1. I have noticed an issue with mirrors. It is partly reproducible on 2.05 too.

2. Water renders incorrectly with FBO, see issue.

3. Where skull talks to you, everything look wrong. As if the big door that you opened is visible only from inside. Here is the screenshot:

vhrwcx.jpg

Also, some items here are incorrectly clipped. For instance, when a paper flies around the bridge, it is visible whenever its center point gets into the screen. If center point is slightly off screen, then the whole paper is not rendered (which looks like it disappears/reappears). Maybe something is wrong with bounding box...

These things are the same in 2.05 and 2.06 beta, so it is not the problem of 2.06.

4. Did you use any specific skybox or the default one?

In 2.05 I see dark clouds, while in 2.06 beta I see stars, and even the city with windows lit in the distance.

This skybox also applies to the place I wrote about in point 3.

Maybe I see different results because I used noclipping...

Those things must have broken since 2.03 then. Because that scene where you can see inside the tower looked like this upon release:

https://youtu.be/hixtBrkUSAw?t=29m28s

Also in the accountant 2 the skyboxes change depending on where you are in the map, they use a trigger system to do this at certain choke points where the player must pass through. So if you noclip or notarget through any part of the map you will break them.

Pagan Orb

So I found the orb and carefully (I think) carried it to the pot and placed it in. Nothing happened. I don't think I broke it but how would you know ? So instead I went searching for fuscosious fruit and plerkernikus gas to place in the pot first, but I'm thinking it's already in there. Can't find those ingredients.

OK...I solved this problem by going to a previous save and transporting the orb MUCH more carefully (This is a nasty objective to complete ; you should at least notify when the orb is broken in transport)

Combination

The hint must be in a readable somewhere, The combination probably opened the glass encasements in that particular room. Problem is, some readables are in my inventory, but others aren't. Any help ?

Problem solved, though I cheated by using a walkthrough

But I have found 6 / 8 secrets so far, so I'm not totally inept.

Update....now have 7 / 8 secrets

The orb being broken is something I've never understood because how it works is that there is a special entity attached to the orb in the editor that is invisible. It is right on the entity and it is binded to it, when that entity touches a trigger inside the pot it activates and causes the sequences to go down as they're meant to.

There's no way of me to tell if that entity has detached from the orb, infact I'm not even sure why it happens. However I need to update this mission in 2.06 anyway so I will change that scene so that the player just picks up the orb as an inventory item. The reason why I didn't do that originally was because I wanted a bit of challenge to the player to bring the orb over and as it was an optional objective I guess it didn't get tested as much as it should.

Unanticipated ending, and like the other mission, I can't go back to try to find the missing secret. Is there a list somewhere ?

I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).
