no space for such a configuration unfortunatly. the cabinet is quite compact, they call it a mid size but it is more like a tossup between an atx and a micro atx. only thing i could get room for was mounting the AIO fans on one side of the front cutouts and the radiator on the other side. so basically im blowing hot air inside the cabinet 🤣. if they had moved the cutout at the top just 1cm toward the side the 280 would have had no problem fitting there.

not exactly retro no, many still use the skylake cpu's only problem being win 11 compatibility (unless you bypass the checks). microsoft kinda blew the ball on all the compatibility crap as even my oldest sandy still ran win11 with no problem.

instead they butchered support for many older soundcards like the X-Fi titanium fatality which is just crap as i newer had any stability problems with it and it is the last card with a real hardware DAC. to get the same sound quality today id have to invest in an external DAC. all cards today use software processing instead.

later cpu series also had some hitches because they at some point decided to replace the soldered IHS with a tim based one causing bad thermals. but it seems they went away from that idea again.

hmm could get an I7 6700k they go for around 50 euros here. not a bad chip at all either though it only has 4 cores, 8 threads with HT. bit like a faster model of my old 4790k despite both being 4ghz and the devils canyon boosting higher 4.4 vs 4.2 ghz.

a sandy like the old x58 nehalem chips might be closer to real retro 😆 but they do run well.

That soldered IHS really does suck

Speaking of IHS, there have already been breakthroughs with silver IHS and graphene IHS.

I’m curious if silicon carbide and alumina could be promising and possible options in the future.

Uh the soldered one is the good one 😂. After they started using thermal paste between the ihs cover and cpu thermals went straight to hell. Especially if overclocked forcing many to delid the ihs cover (not without risk).

Haha i was typing this while drowsy last night

Yeah you are right

Carbon nanotube is an old tech hype , When will it take off for the IHS material?

probably to expensive which was also the reason they at some point tried with thermal paste because it keept cost down.

sadly that specific trick backfired somewhat 😂. at this point id rather see them actually push light based processors so we dont need a freaking refrigerator to keep things cool lol.

speaking of drowsy i should be in bed now myself hehe it is 5.30 in the morning here 😴

Unlike everything else atm, PC cases are very cheap atm, so there is no reason not to upgrade.

I know, though i just got this case and with everything else i had to get for it im out off funds for now 😂. But lets see, i might be able to do some magic so it will work.

it is this one https://www.bequiet.com/en/case/5756

nice enough looking but has some weird choices in some places.

AIO in the top mount can only be 240 and noone uses a 240 nowadays 😂.

AIO in front can take as big as a 360 but then the HD cage cant fit anymore.

cabinet while having a modern layout uses plastic push pins for the front yuck...

cable managment is handled with velcro strips ?!?.

the cabinets adressable lighting hub has no external connections for other gear, it only works for the cabinet lighting (while mine is the same as the one on the be quiet site it does not come with a hub for argb and fan control so either they lie or they changed it later).

so a lot of compromises to keep it small and despite the front being plastic the cabinet is pretty darn expensive as well.

i replaced the fans with lian li unifans which are actually more quiet than the be quiet fans 😂.

these can be daisy chained without cables which is another nice feature.

i selected the liquid freezer III 280 AIO because of its outstanding cooling performance so it was the best tradeoff if i wanted enough space for the HD cage compared to a 360 where there was not.

so plan is to mount the two 140mm unifans up top as exhaust and the 280 AIO in front.

having the AIO in front means it would not have the best liquid flow but it worked well enough with the 360 so compromise.

Posted

ok got it mounted with some difficulty.

AIO is in front, HD cage was able to be mounted as well (barely), the two unifans i mounted in the top slot.

cools ok in anything but a stresstest where it reaches 75 " compared with the 360 which was able to keep it at 55 ".

new VRM cooler on the liquid freezer is damn good 😂 20 " down from 50 " yowsa.

still waiting on the a-rgb splitter cables so not all the lighting is turned on yet (bright enough allready that i can read a book lol).

note for anyone who wants to try the liquid freezer with an AM4. be very carefull not to tighten the pump screws to much or your board may stop posting. 2 turns is enough 3 turns caused boot failure on my board.

now ill be off to newer newer land 😂😴

I'm still undecided on whether to sell these 2 main PC components and some old "battlestations" (32/64GB ram upgrade and 1TB ssd upgrade , no fixed schedule for 5700x3d). if I do go through with it, I'll " BRB  " since I won't be at my main workstation from December through March or April(till it sold out) plus I have specific projects at other locations so this PC will get a long hibernation.

I just asked an acquaintance of mine about memory prices in Hong Kong versus mainland China(around futian or quangdong for china), the Hong Kong pc part prices can be two to three times higher. Unfortunately, he doesn't know how to use Taobao or mainland JD app(supported payment gateway, customs, shipping to other country, etc). Hand carry would be easier choice

crazy times , I've been looking for RAM with chips made by CXMT and Nanya (Nanya is Taiwanese) because i have insatiable curiosity regarding those chips

By the way, the RAM I'm currently using actually comes from that region, color me shocked, the parent group is Essencore. Back when I was shopping for parts, I was frustrated that most memory brand like corsair,  patriot, gskill  was sold out (this was dec 2024) so the shop assistant suggested this brand and it turned out to be quite durable.

many good ideas that were scrapped at the time people got them due to the technology to take advantage of it was not there yet. sounds a bit fun to have a resonator in a cmos but i bet people will complain if it starts to sound like coil whine 😂.

had been up for two days yesterday so i did not quite finish up my project, but despite not having the argb splitters yet i did some housekeeping by adjusting a few things in the build.

the AIO was as said mounted in the front cutout but i arranged it so that the tubes are at the bottom. this is because otherwise the air inside the AIO would move towards the pump and that would destroy it pretty quickly. only downside is that the hoses kinda bump into my gfx card but mechanically it is sound.

i also had to reverse the top fans due to how the fan outlets are arranged on my board (at the bottom) otherwise i had to use an extra cable because the one on the fans are to short when arranged like i did previously.

i also did some housekeeping on the cables in the back especially the arbg cables so now they are ready for when i get the splitters.

my board actually has a pretty funny feature where if you have a mechanical harddrive you can cache the command queue which makes it just as fast as an ssd unless the cache gets emptied to quickly. this depends on how much ram the board is currently holding (supports up to 128 gb) i use about 15% of my 32 gb as cache and it runs cyberpunk 2077 from that drive without a hitch 😆.

all the lighting stuff is really not me i have to admit, but the cabinet came loaded with it and the board supports it so i thought what the heck.

ill take some pictures when it is done 😉

Well here it is :) the cabinet is btw not black despite it looking that way (must be because of the light angle 😂).

had to skip the front dustfilter cause it gets sucked into the fan sigh.

still not 100% done. more lights to connect 😆. the button to the right of the headphone jack lets you skip through several light modes or if held for 3 seconds it lets the mainboard controller do it.

right now it is using the aura controller on my mainboard.

my developer machine is also up and running again though that one allmost made me pop a bloodvessel. seems my ram in it have developed an aversion to overclocks and refused to show more than 8gb despite it having 32 gb unless i turn off all overclocking eh ???. strangely afterwards i can overclock it again no problem. what is even more strange is that im only overclocking the cpu (unlocked multiplier) not the ram. this has worked fine for years and years but after i recently pulled it apart it started with this crap sigh.

guess the oldie will die in that cabinet cause im not sure if it will survive another trip on the working bench 🤣.

hmm i might actually go with an argb fan hub next time around. bit overkill maybe but it makes cable managment a bit easier as  i can place it centrally in the build. something like the asus TUF hub should be fine for this.

my board actually has a connection for an asus node hub but there is no such device... it was newer built and the one from the x299 boards does not work for this one 😂 wtf asus ?!?.

the 9800x3d is still faster but not as much as you might believe :). it generally does better in the 1% lows but the 5800x3d is not that far behind.

im seriously considering it though the 12 cores on the 5900x are nice as well.

still wainting on my argb splitters but the supply chain is kinda fubared atm so earliest i will see them is in 3 to 4 days.

the liquid freezer III is humming along in the meantime as i cure the thermal paste. its pretty silent unless i crank the fans to 11 so i barely notice it running in the background. the lighting is more distracting tbh 😂.

found a 4 stick set of 32 gb cl16 3600 mhz ram at a nice price though i cant afford it atm so it will have to wait.

the current ram are probably better suited for my broadwell as the default is 2133 mhz cl14 and the old board not liking 3200 mhz sticks unless i use the xmp profile in which case it would be overclocked anyway.

found an adapter from one of the internal usb 3.1 connections to usb C so i can get that cable mounted as well in the lancool III where my developer machine is currently residing.

at some point and if prices dont go nuts on used hardware i might invest in a 299x board and cpu for the developer machine. should match the capability of my 3070 a little better as right now i dont get any use out of rebar since my old board does not support it and i had no luck with the bios hacks that should enable it.

I’m tired of looking at the design of my PCCooler PC case and my sister's BeQuiet! PC case.

I think I want to go back to a PC case that’s all silver, like the ones from early millenium  or one with a design that doesn’t get boring.

It’s a shame I threw away all my old metallic gray PC cases 6–7 years ago

It’s really hard to find cases like  Apevia X Cruiser, RAIDMAX Scorpio ATX-868WBP, and Cooler Master Wavemaster in blue. I’ll pick up anything at a flea market that resembles those cases (a few months ago at a flea market, I saw a few silver ones)

The side panel design of those cases iq quite different compared to modern case

and say goodbye to cable management which wasn't a priority back then

try to find some of the older lian li cases if you like the silver look :). upside they are very very sturdy and in full aluminium. downside they can be quite heavy and air flow is not allways the best. they are also quite popular with case modders because you can add glass frames yourself or make outlets for better airflow if you have the gear to handle aluminium atleast. some of them actually had removeable motherboard trays which ment you could mount the entire computer outside the case then slide in the tray and voila. they are not all that pricey used either despite many of them costing an arm and a leg when they were new 😉. kleinanzeigen in germany usually has a fine selction of used ones for sale.

like this one https://www.kleinanzeigen.de/s-anzeige/lian-li-pc-v1000-pc-gehaeuse-metall/3513866253-225-4447

or https://www.kleinanzeigen.de/s-anzeige/lian-li-pc-gehaeuse/3505353520-225-4913

the last one is a hightower so it is very big (i had one though mine was black).

thank you for the recommendation

The removable motherboard tray feature is pretty cool, though.

i have trust issue with glass frame especially tempered glass because if you're not careful, the glass could shatter (especially if it hits a tiled floor or a certain type of case). i 100% prefer mesh for side panel  now

For older PC cases, airflow management is definitely the main issue though I couldn’t care less about the ribbon cables.

If I were to use an old ATX case like that, I’d have to remove the 5.25-inch bay or take out the CD-ROM tray and the 3.5-inch floppy drive, then route the airflow through the rear and side vents (if any)

Aside from brands that actually specialize in making PC cases, I wasinterested in the HP Media Center PC and HP Pavilion A1340n or A1742n pc case. They really capture that 2000s vibe, not to mention they have a port for reading CompactFlash (CF) cards and a FireWire port (even if it’s just for show and doesn’t actually work) last but not least ,  it’s silver!

i dont have problem with non grey or silver pc case, such as this :

s-l1200.jpg

There are a lot of models like this at the flea market.

So far I’ve just realized that I don’t really like beige cases either, and i like if  the lights only have one color mode either green or blue

i just miss the time when side panel had this kind of shape (xoxide storm for example)

plenty of lian li models have both firewire and flash drives (i have one heh).

the early models came in silver or black anodized alu (also got one of both).

biggest problem with lian li's older cabinets were the fans which while silent unless pushed did not move much air at all.

replace them with a set of noctuas and the airflow is actually reasonable.

some also make cutouts in the frame for more fans and the 5.25 drive trays can be converted to fans as well (there are some fan trays that are ready made for these but they usually come in black).

i use my small 3 fan silver lian li case with a haswell 4790k and an AMD  RX5700XT and it works well despite the gfx card getting rather hot even in a well ventilated case.

the reason i like them so much is that they are easy to modify and there are a ton of accessories for them though you will have to look those up on the used market as they no longer get produced.

i have a 5.25 " fan controller for the silver one but with the haswell board i did not really have any use for it since it is new enough to have several fan controllers.

also got a 3.14" flash drive controller for the floppy cutout.

i also liked the old coolermaster HAF X cabinets, which while old still has some of the best airflow you can get (downside is that its heavy as hell because its a full tower steel cabinet).

the oldest (beige) cabinets also have problems because the plastic tends to crack due to age.

metal is resistant to that but it also gets scratches quite easily (does not matter to the functionality).

in about 10 years my now white be quiet case will be beige (yeah im a smoker sadly) and will probably start to develop plastic fatigue while my now 30 years old lian li will (if im not carefull) have a few more scratches but will otherwise be in good working order 😂.

at that time im probably no longer interrested in PC's as i will be in my early 70's with advanced arthritis making it difficult for me to hold a screwdriver will do that to ya. so ill probably donate my machines to some retro folks interrested in seing the advent of mans greatest folly 🤣.

probably going to retire in cyberspace while a robot wipes my ass 😆

Terribly difficult juggling map designing with work, but I'm still alive and chipping away at something very special. I'm actually making a collaboration of sorts with a friend, I make the map itself and he acts as my "Chief Scope Creep Consultant" that checks in every so often to make sure this project isn't getting out of hand. It's a good system!
