Convert GTKRadiant maps to Dark Radiant format

Recommended Posts

Hey,

I have a heap of maps in GTK Radiant format, and I was wondering if there was a way to extract the brushwork

into Dark Radiant? Does anyone know any way at all to do this?

Thanks

Doesn't it work when you just load the map in DR? The Doom 3/Quake .map formats are not very different and IIRC I built in support for loading all the old brushDef formats.

No it doesn't work. I get a failing parson (0) unknown primitive type error. The map was originally

made for Quake 3 Arena, then converted to Wolfenstien Return to the Castle (for the textures).

It's a palace with 4 floors, and I would love to be able to convert it over to

TDM.

Can you upload the map somewhere, I'd like to see the brush format it's using. Also, I think there's the QuArK editor which can also load and save a variety of formats, maybe this can do the trick for you?

Sure. Here's a link. As I said it's a Q3 map, half done, but all of the textures are gone (alot were custom). I don't care about that, I would just like the brushwork. GTKRadiant

1.5 will load it (Later versions won't). It was done in GTKRadiant 1.5

Ah, I see, this map is using the really old brush format which doesn't even have the "brushDef" keyword in it. I'd be interested to add a parser to the Quake3MapReader, but it might be a while.

In the meantime, can you try loading it in QuArK? One might also have some luck converting the map file using regular expressions.

Got something for you to try out: please download the latest 64 bit pre-release build: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B5l3W4qqEX26a2NMY0lLbUZUbTA

It's the portable version, so just extract the contents somewhere, but don't start it yet.

Then download this file here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B5l3W4qqEX26YjlncF9GZmVsUzQ

Extract the mapdoom3.dll from that archive and put it in the modules/ folder in the DarkRadiant directory, overwriting the mapdoom3.dll that's already there. Then start DarkRadiant.exe, does it load the map successfully?

You Sir, are a legend. That worked perfectly :D hehe it's a big map, so now I have to texture it. I'd welcome any criticisms you see.

So now that works, will it be ok to work on the map since it's a pre-release build? Or should I wait till it's complete/released?

Thanks so much. :D

Excellent, thank you so much Greebo. Long ago in Q3 I wanted to make a haunted mansion map, but you just couldn't do

it in that. With all the brushwork made, now I can really get into it and finally make it. :D So I'm wrapped. Thank you so much. :D

Finally got my PC back from the shop after my SSD got corrupted a week ago and damaged my motherboard. Scary stuff, but thank goodness it happened right after two months of FM development instead of wiping all my work before I could release it. New SSD, repaired Motherboard and BIOS, and we're ready to start working on my second FM with some added version control in the cloud just to be safe!

I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.

I've finally managed to log in to The Dark Mod Wiki. I'm back in the saddle and before the holidays start in full, I'll be adding a few new FM articles and doing other updates. Written in Stone is already done.
