Any thoughts on adding a Burrick?

I've been wondering about Burricks, and if they'd fit in the TDM world. I'm sure this has been

discussed.

I remember seeing a pretty good looking belcher model.. which was abandoned several years ago. "Not in-game yet" is an understatement.

Edit: Almost all the links are broken, but it may still be around here:

Off-topic:

Monitors are not designed to display more than 72 dpi. If you make a drawing at 300dpi, the monitor has to increase the size of the picture because it can't squeeze any more pixels into a given space.

That's a pretty poor model. I'd like to see something a little more updated. The Thief burrick was as it was because

it was done in the 90's and modeling was pretty basic back then. I think something like that creature in

Jurassic Park that spat poison (on the fat guy), scaled up would make a great Belcher.

I don't know if the images in the thread are representative of what would have been the final creature. ascottk's website seems to be lost too.

Maybe someone who was around in 2007 has the files, or continued developing the model.

Keep in mind that creature modeling/animations are one of the hardest/most time intensive things to do, which is why belchers, werewolves, fire elementals, etc. are scarce.

My problem is that the first version of the belcher is too thin and anemic, while the second is too brutal, too massive. Neither of them capture the essence of the burrick, which is more creepy than genuinely frightening, and has a slightly pig-like character. The oddity is missing from these two attempts.

(And of course, neither of them got implemented.)

Come the time of peril, did the ground gape, and did the dead rest unquiet 'gainst us. Our bands of iron and hammers of stone prevailed not, and some did doubt the Builder's plan. But the seals held strong, and the few did triumph, and the doubters were lain into the foundations of the new sanctum. -- Collected letters of the Smith-in-Exile, Civitas Approved

Why should the belchers capture the essence of the burricks? We don't have to copy everything from the original games. The burricks were dangerous, but somehow always appeared a bit silly to me. A creature that looks as dangerous as it is seems fien to me.

Personally I like the images shown above. And if the af editor wouldn't be that screwed (and the documentation on it in the internet a bit better), adding it wouldn't be a big deal.

That reminds me, that I wanted to get the werebeast working. Luckely I have off in a week :)

That's a much better animal, For it to be burrick like though it would need to be stupid haha. ie stand in behind of it bashing it on the back with a sword,

and it's too slow n stupid to see what's hitting it.

  • 1 year later...

Originally we had planned to include a Burrick ripoff, but I'm not sure that's even a good idea anymore, even if we had the model and manpower to do it, (which given the current state of the werebeast, we apparently don't).

I think it's still a good idea Spring. It adds more variety for map makers, new AI, particularly a completely different one, can lead to more creativity, and that

is always a good thing.

Nothing wrong with new AI. Hopefully grayman's new fire elemental will see some use.

Finally got my PC back from the shop after my SSD got corrupted a week ago and damaged my motherboard. Scary stuff, but thank goodness it happened right after two months of FM development instead of wiping all my work before I could release it. New SSD, repaired Motherboard and BIOS, and we're ready to start working on my second FM with some added version control in the cloud just to be safe!

I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.

I've finally managed to log in to The Dark Mod Wiki. I'm back in the saddle and before the holidays start in full, I'll be adding a few new FM articles and doing other updates. Written in Stone is already done.
