What are some of the best or must play Missions out there?

Recommended Posts

That describes a lot of missions out there, but No Honour Among Thieves is a nice three-mission pack that could be a good introduction. Not terribly hard, but has good variety, a compelling story, and lots of exploration.

Come the time of peril, did the ground gape, and did the dead rest unquiet 'gainst us. Our bands of iron and hammers of stone prevailed not, and some did doubt the Builder's plan. But the seals held strong, and the few did triumph, and the doubters were lain into the foundations of the new sanctum. -- Collected letters of the Smith-in-Exile, Civitas Approved

We had a little survey awhile ago:

http://forums.thedarkmod.com/topic/13323-pick-your-top-5-tdm-missions/

It's a bit dated and many new and outstanding missions have raised the bar since then but it should give you some idea

since players have been adding votes all along.

To me, you can't go wrong with:

Moonbo

Melan

Grayman

Sotha

Springheel

But there are so may great single releases such as Baal's "Sir Talbot's Collatoral" or Kvorning's "Lords & Legacy".

Even those authors who have missions that vary in quality or appeal still often have standout missions.

For example, Fieldmedic has been one of the most experimental authors and his more out-there missions have gotten mixed reviews

but if you dare miss "Betrayal" or "Not an Ordinary Guest" you'll be overlooking two of the finest missions in the catalog.

Bikerdude has had a hand in more than half the released missions here since he's a wunderkind at map optimization.

He would probably be amongst the fail-safe list but he has a tendency to make missions that are more about finding hidden

loot than avoiding AI so he loses points with some players who get frustrated with wandering all the nooks and crannies of his maps.

Again, you shouldn't miss his real standout missions "Alberic's Curse", "The Gatehouse", and "Business as Usual"

which are small enough to not get frustrated but showcase a great deal of his visual mastery.

I had google what that word meant ^_^

And regarding loosing point for map style, its why I co-author a lot of maps these days. The Upcoming PennyDreadfull3 is a prime example, all the geometric wizardly, storytelling from Melan, with my optimizations, extra's area's and cosmetic bling.

Awww yeeeaaa thanks Melan.

Seriously though, play Tears of St. Lucia. It's a great starter.

Then play No Honour Among Thieves.

Dear fellow Thieves, I am a new taffer introduced to The Dark Mod, & I wondered what are the best Fan Missions I can play? I am mostly looking for Missions that are either decent, good, great, or must play.

My absolutely favourite is the William Steele series, and the Theives Den series. There is also one or two campaigns (can't remember) but are fine fm's

I have an eclectic YouTube channel making videos on a variety of games. Come and have look here:

Dark Mod Missions: Briarwood Manor - available here or in game

Just played The Caduceus of St. Alban again. I am not sure whether it is in the list of the top ten (there are so much missions i last played years ago that might or might not be better). But in any case it is a solid mission with good visuals (it is from 2010 but from Bikerdude - so while not as fancy as some newer FMs its geometry/details/lighting is well made), nice AI placing and patrol routes, difficulty settings that really make a difference...

...and it is a Vertical FM Contest entry featuring absolutely smooth and natural vertical game play.

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
