The story (being a sequel) starts where you ended with the Librarian.

In the Librarian, you were on a quest to find the Spear of Destiny which is believed to give immense power to the one in possession of it.
At the end of the mission, you arrived at the place where The Spear had been hidden for millennia, guarded by the spirits of Water, Fire, Air and Earth. But the Spear was not there. It had been taken by the Mechanists! The Mechanists were disbanded after the fall of their evil leader, Karras, but clearly they regained their powers, led by their new leader, Cavall. At this point the mission, The Librarian, ended and left you hanging ...

"So, Garrett, once again, it is up to you to save the world! Follow the trail left by the Mechanists to their secret hide out and prevent them from activating the Spear."

So that is your mission in The Spear. You start in an abandoned compound of an ancient Numerology sect. Here you must find a passage to the new hideout of the Mechanists. In their mega-fortress you will have to find the Spear again ... and a way to destroy it ... maybe .... The Spear is packed full of intrigue and side-plots initiated by the evil Cavall. Expect the unexpected! And if you like to explore, your quest can lead you to some very strange, hidden locations.

Proceed with caution, taffer ...

  • you will need newdark 1.24 to play this fanmission
  • the mission comes with subtitles ( thanks Nickie) , see the FMinfo-file if you want to disable them
  • russian translation in the zip ( thanks Soldi)
  • a big thank you to my alpha and beta testers who kept me busy for 4 months;)
  • a even bigger thank you to Nickie for enduring all my "semi" english and correcting it.
  • thank you to my voice actors, the people that made all those custom goodies for me. you can find them all in the FMinfo-file
  • and last but not least: redleaf, for helping me all those years, redecorating the whole mission, making new textures and objects, new AI, lighting, voice acting, singing, nagging me to get the mission ready, writing all the side stories, endless advice and so on and so on.

NewDark is a special patch for Thief 1 and 2. If makes those games playable on modern PC's and allows them to run missions

with larger polygon counts, textures, and higher lightmap quality. (This is a Thief 2 fan mission thread.)

Please visit TDM's IndieDB site and help promote the mod:

(Yeah, shameless promotion... but traffic is traffic folks...)

More specifically they got the original 2001? Dark Engine sourcecode, updated it for modern systems, and released a new version.

I remember in the old days people dreaming about it. Then one day it happened & it was just as cool as everybody had hoped for.

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

Yes, NewDark has no relation to The Dark Mod. To elaborate on what nbohr1more said, NewDark was created by someone who had access to the original Thief 2 Dark Engine source code. More than just a patch, it's a completely new build of the Dark Engine. It has loads of fixes and additions, such as native support for modern screen resolutions.

They were also able to make the New Dark Engine backwards compatible with Thief 1, so it too could reap the rewards of modern hardware.

I thought I'd try this. What's the best link for this Newdark thing?

I did find a patch that made the old Thief Gold run a few months back without having to make any special adjustments to it but can't remember what it was.

Got it going very easily using Dragofer's link and it works very well and very smoothly.

The mission itself is standard fare but well done. It makes a change to wallow in what I wad playing ten years back though !

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
