Late night random thoughts ~ Douse torches with a tankard of water!

Good evening all!

So that time comes around again when the weekend is but a memory and the day job continues in but a few hours...

...perfect time for thinking of new ideas when you've run out of water arrows, but the torch is right next to you!

How about heading back to the kitchen and grabbing a tankard, but the sink is empty and the tap is borked! Head outside to the fountain and scoop up some water... don't run back though or you might spill it everywhere!

Careful you don't burn yourself!

[insert water graphics here!]

Other thinking for this situation was some kind of soaking wet cloth that contains 1 use. The cloth could be dunked in a water source, perhaps carried in some kind of leather pouch.

The cloth can be shlomped or flung over a burning torch. This would extinguish the torch, but if not removed before a guard goes to relight the torch, he'll find a soaking cloth over the top...

"Hey! I... I think we got a taffer in the building lads!"

This concludes this episode of "Late night random thoughts", good night everyone! ^_^

My Autoexec.cfg contains seta g_fov "65" and seta r_gamma "0.9" for a more immersive Dark Mod experience...

Always expert difficulty every time... all hail the Dark Mod mission authors!

This is a nice idea, but just as the discussion about extinguishable oil lamps (http://forums.thedarkmod.com/topic/17365-should-small-static-oil-lamps-be-extinguishable-up-close/?hl=%2Bextinguishable+%2Blamps), this might break a lot of missions. Providing more or less water arrows is one of the main tools for authors to determine difficulty. If the player can extinguish falmes by other means, this renders water arrows basically useless and reduces the control the author has about lights.

Definitely not a feature to the core mod, but that would be a fun change of pace for a fan mission, where the character cannot use water arrows, but could douse flames with a water-source refillable tankard. The tankard could hold enough water to douse maybe three flames, but the player could refill it at any water source.

This would give the player an endless flame dousing tool, but it could be nicely balanced, because

1) the AI relights flames

2) the player needs to go to a water source to refill the tankard (makes dousing all flames impossible As The AI relights faster than player hauls water.)

3) the player needs to stand right next to a flame for a while to douse it. Perhaps it is a hand held tool with a view model like you present it in the screenies.

I like it! If someone implements it in a way that it is easy to plop into a WIP mission, I might use it in a mission.

I really like that idea. And yeah, it makes sense for a player character who has no bow. And +1 to what sotha said.

A while ago I've experimented with water bottles the player can pick up and throw at torches. Worked out pretty well, too. Just mentioning as it falls under the same category. :)

I think that would be an interesting mechanic actually. You douse the light and ensure an AI can't see, but you've created noise by (ideally) breaking the bottle and if an AI is actually nearby, they'll be likely to investigate.

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
