Minor problem when using EAX with Audigy

Recommended Posts

There is crackling from the front left speaker which isn't there when EAX is disabled

Why this should happen I have no idea

First noticed with Down by the Riverside but now there with no FM active - just the opening screen

Also checked with Coercion and is also there but is masked by the ambient noise

Are there any diagnostics I can try

Edit - checked again in Down by the Riverside and it is there in the boat at the start but isn't there in the next section after drinking the potion but as soon as you enter the house (where the lady is sitting) it returns

Post your DxDiag.

"I really perceive that vanity about which most men merely prate — the vanity of the human or temporal life. I live continually in a reverie of the future. I have no faith in human perfectibility. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active — not more happy — nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago. The result will never vary — and to suppose that it will, is to suppose that the foregone man has lived in vain — that the foregone time is but the rudiment of the future — that the myriads who have perished have not been upon equal footing with ourselves — nor are we with our posterity. I cannot agree to lose sight of man the individual, in man the mass."...

I have an Audigy card as well that makes really odd sounds with EAX enabled.

It basically sounds like a jittery hang at the beginning of certain sounds.

Also stereo sound doesn't seem to work as expected with EAX on. A character will be talking on screen in front of me, but will sound far left/right.

I'm not sureabout diagnostics, I haven't run across too much on dooms sound engine and EAX in general. Is there any in-depth documentation on this?

Anderson- What/ where is the Dx/Diag?

Edit: found it :)

Not surprising, it looks like any ATI tools will interfere with Audigy cards. I'm about to switch to nvidia

Not really a solution and your getting inferior sound.

Not with today's motherboard integrated audio chips IF they are shielded from EM interferences (=the motherboad has a good layout/power distribution).

Any progress Jim? Have you tried reinstalling your Audigy drivers and OpenAL?

Fully nuking your drivers is a hassle, but I've had to do this several times to get my audio equipment working properly. It might be worth it: https://nomoregoatsoup.wordpress.com/2007/09/12/how-to-fully-uninstall-creative-vista-drivers-solve-install-problems/

I haven't bothered - I have had other problems with my rig - wrecked front USB ports (caught my foot in the wire which short circuited something so exceeded the allowable current draw) and mouse failure so went wireless

I have just left EAX disabled

However I now hear crackling from the front left speaker when the rear left speaker is used all the time which needs sorting

UPDATE

Tried switching the left and right speakers over at the connection to the sub woofer and the problem is still on the left

Tried different speaker (I had a spare) and the problem is inside the amplifier/subwoofer so it looks like new speaker system is needed

Tried using the on board sound and problem has gone away so it looks as though there is a problem with the sound card - will investigate further when I next open the case

I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.

I've finally managed to log in to The Dark Mod Wiki. I'm back in the saddle and before the holidays start in full, I'll be adding a few new FM articles and doing other updates. Written in Stone is already done.

I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).
