So I've come to this mission late. Not that this is a bad thing- it means I was able to play after the updates, and I had a mostly flawless playthrough as a result (there were only a few visual glitches, such as a see-through wall at one point and a few other display errors, but nothing that effected gameplay).

 

I really liked this one, NeonsStyle, thank you. After I finished, I perused this thread as well as the one on TTLG to see if anything big popped out that I missed (I ended short 710 of max loot), and I'll agree with something brought up- I really, REALLY wanted to take some part

in actions vs. Crowley after I read his journal. Like lit-my-ass-on-fire this man is going DOWN, which at least I was able to have some part in, though I was only able to hear the action through the door. The real heart tugger, though, was when I was down in his private area, and I heard the girl crying... not being able to do something about that, or about the remains in the well, made me feel really ineffectual.

 

 

All that said, though, I'll reiterate that I quite enjoyed this one, and as this IS your first mission, I'll end with the fact that I'm really looking forward to what you come up with next.

 

Thank you for your kind words Shaz. Glad you liked the mission, I spent a lot of time on it. Where did you find the see through wall? There are a few pieces of loot

that you're lead to by readables, especially one you'd probably not find if you'd not read Tobys note.

 

I agree with you on you being left feeling ineffectual. Crowley is a bastard, however if I'd let you do the deed it would've had a couple of consequences.

 

1. You wouldn't have got the conversation between Crowley and Giles, or the murder scene as detailed; and I don't think you would've enjoyed just hacking at

him as much as the conversation.

 

2.

 

 

Also, I felt it better for the story that Giles be the one to get revenge, rather than you; after all; she was his daughter. Also your job was more to uncover

the secrets of the house and arrange for him to die and also to save the imprisoned girl, which you did. :)

 

 

Some didn't like how seedy this story was, but I felt Corbin is a criminal; and is very familiar with Crime; and the darker side of TDM crime really hasn't been touched

on, so I felt it was time to open that door. lol

 

Next one I am still working on, It will take place in Venice. :)

I noticed the see-through part on my left coming back up the stairs from the basement. I don't recall seeing it when I went down the stairs, just when I came back up them. I thought it was very weird at the time, I had a very 'how the heck did I miss THIS?' reaction when I saw it, as it was quite large.

 

Re: the conversation- I agree that what happened with Crowley went perfectly, it was far more fitting the way it panned out. The ineffectual feeling was a sum total of everything, but it didn't prevent me from enjoying the mission.

 

About loot- I don't think I read Toby's note, but from browsing the thread I think it might mention

the item on the rafters,

which I found. I had more than enough to finish the mission with, I'd just checked the thread before to see if I'd somehow missed

another secret area

or something.

 

Edit to add: Yes, the dark theme. Someone who creeps around a house and finds all the secrets is going to occasionally find much more than the family jewels, and some secrets are horrible. You didn't glorify it, and I thought it was handled well (aside from not being able to do much myself). And, heck, look at the reaction I had to it as described in my post earlier. That means I really got involved in the story, which is a good thing!

Thanks Shaz. As to loot, there are a few places you probably missed, you might like to look at next time.

 

 

Tobys note refers to a broken window, and rats getting in. The rats have a hole in the basement. The gem was mentioned in Jeanies letter to Toby where she mentioned he had it hid in his stablel there are also some other items hidden in out of the way places, tables, mantles, etc.

@Goldwell,

 

The FM page is only showing 2 download links, the southqaurter link is missing. And checking a few other missions, they are also missing this mirror.

Southquarter was hacked and all FM's mirrored on it have been deleted.

 

Brethren hasn't had gotten to fixing it yet.

Thanks Iowenz. Those two problems are fixed in the latest version (1.7).

 

 

 

Hitting him with sword or arrow doesn't get you the key. When he gets up, he's scripted to give it to you. So if you hit him, he's going get up and the scripts going

to be activated. :D

First mission in a while for me. 'twas a good time, except that I got stuck at about the middle and had to turn to the forums for help.

 

Turns out, I had not looked for the hidden switch in the Dining Room closely enough.

 

 

Nice mission otherwise.

Thanks. As for the secret switch. I'm a firm believer in realism; and a lot of people like to have these things easily found, but in keeping with immersion, I feel

in real life it would never be easy to spot. I find making it harder to find, is more enjoyable. Making it easy in my mind, breaks the 4th wall.

Possible bug?... When I "frob" the newspaper in the bathroom across from the kitchen, nothing happens (the paper isn't displayed) I can no longer "frob/right click" anything and am stuck in the toilet. :) I'm on linux if it matters (fedora 28, latest darkmod 2.06).

Hmmm... i've been downloading/updated from here:

Got this error when darkmod tried to "update" the new pk4:

 

Sys_Error: Couldn't get file info for startingmap.txt in /games/darkmod/fms/briarwood_manor/briarwood_manor.pk4, pos 95846748

About to exit with code 1

 

I deleted the whole fm and reinstalled it... that seemed to be clean, but still can reproduce the newspaper focus bug in this one too (v1.7). Here's snippet output messages at end if that helps:

That's wierd. You can get the latest version from the in game downloader. On the main menu, just click New, down the bottom click Download then look through to find

Briarwood Manor. If you check the description it'll say 1.7 you can click the select button then click download. The go through your map list and click install n ur good to go.

 

If you still have problems let me know, and I'll find another way to get it to you, though you can also get it from the first post in this thread. :)

There are a few things I need to say about this one. I need to start with pointing out some important technical issues with the map, which I noticed while playing it in TDM 2.06 (64bit, Linux).

  1. Very bad performance in the outdoor area. This has already been pointed out so I'm only confirming it.
  2. The sky is broken. If you look up while moving the mouse, objects leave trails that get brighter each frame as they pass in front of it.
  3. On one of the walls containing the stairway that leads from the basement to the first floor, there is a huge BSP cut. Two large triangles extend across through which you can see the void.
  4. The music starts and stops erratically. Sometimes I enter an area and there's no music, at other times there is music but it plays at a low volume. The act of saving seems to make the music start / stop too. Unless I'm horribly mistaken, this might have to do with area portals not being compiled properly, as the ambience is dependent on those (that would also explain issue #3).

With that out of the way, here's my opinion on the FM itself. Overall I very much loved it! I read also that this is your first map, so congrats further more for getting it so right :)

 

Pro: Great story with a sad twist. Once you find the secret area it gets the ball rolling. I loved the dynamics, and especially the dialogue with the one character that turns non-hostile. The intro video was also great.

 

Con: The layout of the house is much too linear! The house looks so much like a maze where you unlock one hallway after the other, that it even feels unrealistic like it's not a normal house at all. If you can and wish to develop this further, I'd redo the layout somewhat (the walls and doors) to make it more fluid.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm thinking you're playing a very early version of the map, as the the BSP cut was fixed, and I've never

heard of sky issues. No one else has mentioned that, and I certainly don't see it So I'm thinking it might be something relating either

to your install, or version of the map.

 

The outside performance is of course poor, however it's made for medium and high end systems. On my i7 I get a solid 60 fps outside witha minimum of 30 fps. So I was

quite happy with the performance. However others have complained about it too as you noted.

 

The linear nature you talk about also makes me think you're on a very early version of the map. The linear issues were resolved on 1.2 Latest version is 1.7

For some reason the mirrors still had 1.65.

 

I fixed them and added southquarter's mirror back (thanks Brethren!).

 

You should now see an update available in the mission downloader and the version should now be 1.7
