Sundered is the free game on the Epic store this week. Which is described as a hand-drawn metroidvania.

Positive review on Steam

If i could give this a neutral rating i would.

The game is fun at times but for the most part its a very forgettable game. The story was boring and the game never tries to make it interesting. The combat is a lot of fun but can get really frustrating. You will most likely die many times but you will get better as you continue. The art work is amazing but the areas are very boring a lackluster. I feel there are many pros and cons to this game but all i can say that if you enjoy a difficult game, fun combat and metroidvania type game than this is a good choice.

Negative review on Steam

Gameplay loop consists of traveling through rooms filled with 20+ of the same 2 enemies in a 1 button game with no mid air evade. The skill tree is cool but the gameplay loop throws annoying amounts of enemies at you to give you the currency required to make skill tree progression. Boring and tedious, filling the room with 20+ enemies doesn't make something challenging.

Sundered is like Dead Cells with cooler visuals, but some camera problems and doesn't give you the long-term motivation like Dead Cells does. I never finished Sundered, I simply lost interest somewhere along the line. However, since it's free, it's definitely worth checking out. If it's either play this or Dead Cells, I would definitely reommend the latter though.

Horace is the free game in the Epic Store this week, which seems like a very interesting platformer that I'll certainly try myself.

Positive Steam review

"If you've ever played Jet Set Willy, then this is sort of like that - in that it has a mansion inexplicably filled with conveyor belts, electrified barbed wire, and self-animated garden shears - but it's also so much more. A massive world to explore (outside the mansion), a fantastic story, mini-games, and a ton of other surprises, this was absolutely my game of the year for 2019. I don't usually enjoy platformers where I die over 1000 times (I know, the game keeps count!) but I played this one to the end of the story, and then some more for the additional quest, then some more for a few achievements, simply because I was having so much fun that I didn't want it to be over."

Negative Steam review

"The story is... fine. Honestly, it carried the game for me and kept me playing for as long as I did. Unfortunately, the gameplay gets a bit tedious and the game felt like it was dragging on by hour 5. If you can overlook mediocre gameplay for a decently crafted story, you might like this game."

Free-ish games/demos of horrors

Good stuff

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1170820

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1094030

Second one is Japanese horror

Makes me proud that TDM has a couple of good horror FM's of its own.

22.01.2020 Update: all Half-Life games are free to play until March when they want to release Half-Life: Alyx. If you want to see what's all the hype about, there it is for now.

"I really perceive that vanity about which most men merely prate — the vanity of the human or temporal life. I live continually in a reverie of the future. I have no faith in human perfectibility. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active — not more happy — nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago. The result will never vary — and to suppose that it will, is to suppose that the foregone man has lived in vain — that the foregone time is but the rudiment of the future — that the myriads who have perished have not been upon equal footing with ourselves — nor are we with our posterity. I cannot agree to lose sight of man the individual, in man the mass."...

The Bridge is the free game on the Epic Store this week. A logic puzzle game.

Positive Steam review

The Bridge is a puzzle platformer with magnificent hand drawn art. You play as a scientist who has to solve abstract mind-bending puzzles, which you access by opening doors in the main characters house. Between worlds, players are treated to vauge narrations about the characters life and his loved one. Also, you can rewind time.

Negative Steam review

I see quite a few people picking this up at the very low sale price. Just in case there's anyone else sitting on the fence about this, I thought I should add a note of caution. This is essentially a physics puzzler, which is ostensibly a genre I enjoy. In this case however, I think the the execution fails to live up to the ideas. For me, most of the challenge in the game came not through reasoning through the puzzles (though there were moments), but in wrestling with object momentum that frequently ended up being more frustrating than satisfying. At the sale price of $1 it's hard to argue that it's a waste of money. But I feel that personally for me it ended up being a waste of time. And that's something a low price does nothing to help. I see many good things written elsewhere about this game, so I may be in a minority in feeling this way, but I can't help but feel that there are far better puzzle games out there, despite the compelling visual style that I still find appeals to me even though it also triggers memories of annoying level design.

Carcassonne and Ticket to Ride are the free games on the Epic Store this week. Personally I'm a big fan of board games (the real ones, not the virtual) and have played Carcassonne for years with my mate. I have also played this virtual version of Carcassonne though and it does a good job to recreate the feeling of the real board game. Once you get the hang of the game, the AI might be lacking in some departments, but I still enjoyed some good games. I have never played Ticket to Ride, but the reviews on Steam are very positive.

Like chakkman already said last week, Kingdom Come: Deliverance is one of the free games this week and the other one is Aztez. You obviously just get the basic version of KC and have to buy any DLCs you'd like. The Royal DLC bundle, which has all the DLCs, isn't that expensive though IMO. One of the biggest issues people have with KC is the save system, but as far as I know there's a mod that allows unlimited saving whenever the game normally would let you save. There are a few other issues, but all in all most people just love the game and from what I've seen I definitely agree with that.

Aztez is a game set in the Aztec Empirte with beat-em-up combat and turn-based strategy. The combat system is lauded but the punishing rules (start over a whole campaign when you die and don't have more lives for example) are seen as cons.

Assassin's Creed Syndicate and Faeria are the free games in the Epic Store this week. Faeria looks pretty interesting (I like these kind of card games) and reviews on Steam are very positive. I'm not a huge fan of the Assassin's Creed franchise, but the games are usually solid, even though they are very repetitive and give a false feeling that there's a lot to do.

Already had Watch Dogs, but, I grabbed it again on Epic Store. Who knows if one day I won't spend a bit of time there.

Yeah, and it's the premium edition with all updates and content, GTA Online and a Starter Pack, so no need to buy any DLCs afterwards. Might have to redeem it outside peak hours though as all the servers collapsed. Never really thought of getting the game, but now it's free I'll give it a go.

Prepare for loads of fun. :) Great game. Actually, surely one of the best I played in the last 15 years.

Usually I'm a little miffed about them giving away games that I paid for, especially if I paid full price, but in this case I've logged dozens maybe 100s of hours in this game, so I can't really complain. I think the story of the base game is lousy, but the gameplay is great, and the open world gameplay, plus if you throw in all the mods, is also great.

Honestly though my favorite thing I like to do in this game is just aimlessly driving around fast and creating periodic havoc and trying to shoot my way out of it. Part of that is that I don't have a car anymore (in real life here in Japan), and it used to be important for me to drive fast down the highway listening to music (which is a thing people can do in the US that you can't really do in Japan), and of all the games that have open world driving, this is the game that's the best outlet for that fix.

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).
